to think if you wanted coffee with a friend, McDonalds would not be the obvious place to go?

I mean - it's not even served in a mug.

Just seen the advert and I was surprised to see McDonalds were trying to market themselves as a place to go for a coffee.

Their muffins are also very tasty

CanadianJohn · 18/11/2013 21:53

McDonald's coffee used to be terrible - they did a complete makeover a few years ago, and the coffee is very good, cheap, and you get free refills.

Our local McD has a fireplace, and also free wifi.

OrlandoWoolf · 18/11/2013 21:53

Our one is full of foreign students (and local ones) all meeting up for loud chats Grin

Not that there's anything wrong with loud students.

I think McD's coffee is nice. Don't know about meeting there for coffee though.

UsedToBeNDP · 18/11/2013 21:54

This "No bf women" theme?
Did I miss something?

marmaladeandguitars · 18/11/2013 21:54

I also know coffee snobs who approve of McD coffee. The one I used to go past in town first thing in the morning, was always full of guys in suits with their laptops open in front of them.

Daykin · 18/11/2013 21:55

The McDonalds near me is lovely and the coffee is nice enough. I'm a partial coffee snob. I don't like Starbucks coffee at all and Costa (ok-ish) and Cafe Nero (better) are far away. We have a nice independent coffee place but it's uncomfortable and you can't park very close (or for free), which is a shame because the coffee and food are ok.

OrlandoWoolf · 18/11/2013 21:55

Maybe I'm being a snob Grin
But I just can't imagine suggesting to someone to meet in McDonalds for a coffee.

Now if it was DS and he was hungry (or I fancied some chicken nuggets), that would be a different story altogether.

Maccas have successful made the switch here in Sydney.

McCafe is a favourite as the coffee/cakes are good and come attached to a enclosed playground and the kids can have chips.

McDonalds excellent for breastfeeding, the table sits at just the right height for me, I used to rest the baby on it. Wink

It is all good.

Don't knock it. There are many so called proper cafes out there which serve up really dire shit which costs a fortune.

McD's coffee is at least cheap, and doesn't taste half bad for the price.

VeryStressedMum · 18/11/2013 21:56

McDs coffee is ok actually, I've had a lot worse but I wouldn't choose to go there to meet a friend for coffee, I'd end up having a big Mac meal and a sundae with it Smile

DontmindifIdo · 18/11/2013 21:58

See, I can imagine if the coffee is good, going for a coffee with a friend there, or a colleague, or a parent/adult child, but in that advert, a bloke asks a woman for a date, to go for a coffee. Can you imagine being asked out on a first date and being taken to McDonalds? Really?

UsedToBeNDP · 18/11/2013 21:58

Is the no bf thing a ref to that woman on telly a couple of weeks ago? I'm up to speed now

RescueCack · 18/11/2013 22:01

The coffee's fine. But I would never spend time inside Confused

The drive through is super convenient because we don't have another option for drive through coffee. Whilst I wait for my older ones, baby sleeps in the car and I have a relatively nice, cheap latte without getting him out. And every 7th drink is free. Grin

IDugUpADiamond · 18/11/2013 22:01

In France they even serve it with macarons or should I say McArons?

OrlandoWoolf · 18/11/2013 22:01

Another little point:

McDonalds is cheap and relies on lots of customers who eat and run.

Do they really want people on dates drinking cheap coffee and hogging a table for an hour when they could have several groups of people eating meals?

Mind you, the same principle applies to coffee shops where women are breastfeeding, chatting and using a table for ages over one coffee!! But at least the charge reflects that Grin

The coffee is not bad at all, as a takeaway, wouldn't touch the food though. Our town has a few decent cafés though for meet ups, though I prefer the pub. Coffee is a morning thing.

ENormaSnob · 18/11/2013 22:05

Id love it.

Decent coffee and a big mac meal

wannabedomesticgoddess · 18/11/2013 22:07

I don't like coffee, but I have met a friend and we got a meal in mcds and sat having a catch up for ages. I had my kids.

It was good because people expect kids in there so there are no dirty looks when the baby cries or the older one gets a bit shouty when she talks.

And there aren't a gaggle of waitresses hovering near the table when you have finished, trying to hurry you out so the table can sit empty once more.

WooWooOwl · 18/11/2013 22:07

I agree Mc Donald's coffee is surprisingly good, but OP is right. It's not somewhere you'd go to socialise.

The more I hear - the more I prefer the lovely little independent place 5 minutes from work....good coffee, no screaming kids, no bf, nothing irritating and an excellent place for a meeting.....

OrlandoWoolf · 18/11/2013 22:24

I like my little independent. Except it's too narrow, has massive tables but no space inside and is always crowded. No space for buggies. And it's full of mums which is a good thing but KH would not approve.

But they do refills and lovely cakes. But they really need it to be twice as big.

I love mcds latte. I cannot function properly without one one the way to work. I never sit in but their lattes are bloody delish.
