Well, am I?

DH want to buy something totally unnecessary but expensive.
I don't want it.
We can 'afford' it if affording means the monthly payments.
We have totally shared finances, we both work, I would not stand in his way if this rocks his world, BUT he keeps asking me to approve.

I am disapproving of this purchase, I don't want it, I do think it's a waste of money we could spend on other luxuries (first world problem, I know). How much clearer can I make it??

Aaaaargh!!

So, I am clear or not??
Over to the MN Jury Grin

You are clear but he wants to apease his concionce by you saying yes dear go for it, it's a great purchase.

Sounds like he needs to deliberate this him self and decide if he is with you on this or willing to make an indipendant decision.

What is it by the way, it may be easier if we know what it it's, it's benefits and the pitfalls of the purchase.

MushroomSoup · 16/11/2013 14:11

Bet it's a mahoooosive telly!

TheVermiciousKnid · 16/11/2013 14:12

You need to tell us what it is, P-Doggy!

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:14

It's not a TV, big or otherwise.
And not a car, fancy or otherwise.

It's a fecking boat.
We had a boat from this spring.
It sank (v long story, short).

Insurance is paying out, I'm glad to see the back of the damn thing.
So, now we "need" another boat Hmm.

Woof!!

TheVermiciousKnid · 16/11/2013 14:16

Oooh, we're looking for a boat at the moment! Grin

RandomMess · 16/11/2013 14:17

Just say no Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 16/11/2013 14:17

Is it lingerie? Grin

TheRealAmandaClarke · 16/11/2013 14:18

Oh, x post Blush

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:18

Knid, do you know what B.O.A.T. stands for??

I've said 'no'. He sez 'yes'. Or at the very least 'want to'. Manchild.

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:19

Monthly payments for lingerie, Amanda Shock??
What do you wear?
Knickers spun from fairy dust??

XH and I used to have a saying, "How you gonna cook it?" (From the Monty Python sketch. "What did you buy?" "Piston engine." "How you gonna cook it?") It was, as I'm sure you immediately realise, shorthand for "that may be nice to have but honestly, can you really justify the cost, given how much we're actually likely to use it?"

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:20

Oh, I might have to look that sketch out and play it to him Grin - hadn't thought of that one, thanks!

OP posts:
Anniegetyourgun · 16/11/2013 14:22

Good luck, hope it does the trick! Grin

(It won't, if he really has his heart set on a ruddy boat.)

JudyJudgypants · 16/11/2013 14:24

Right up until I read "Boat" he stood a chance,
Boat= Nope.
He had a boat, it did what boats do, No more boats.

TheVermiciousKnid · 16/11/2013 14:24

What does boat stand for?

We're looking for a boat to live on, part-time. That's probably even more mad.

Caitlin17 · 16/11/2013 14:31

Don't know. In 24 years we've both worked full-time, we decided who would pay for which household expenses out of their own account but have always had separate bank accounts. I don't actually know how much he earns and he doesn't know what I earn, other than it'll be roughly the same. I might earn a bit more now. As long as bills are paid, which they always are, what we buy with our own money is up to us.

The one thing I wouldn't like with this dilemma is the huge TV. I think they're horrible.

Caitlin17 · 16/11/2013 14:35

Oh sorry, it's a boat, that's fine. But he should buy it from his own money.

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:36

Judy, v good point, well made.
Again, I may use that.

BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand
Biscuit

We have a Canadian Canoe which I love - it's great.
The Boat That Sunk was a speed boat - so bloody noisy, expensive, needs looking after and upkeep and servicing and new batteries, LPG run engines can freeze (who knew??), leaving you and DCs stranded in the middle of a rather large body of water etc etc.

It's the noise I dislike the most (apart from the cost and how demanding the darn thing is) - boating should be quiet and serene and calm IMO.

DH also like motorsport Hmm - need I say more?

OP posts:
TheVermiciousKnid · 16/11/2013 14:42

A speed boat? In that case, YANBU. Too noisy.

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:43

I would love to live on a boat.
Without DH
And without DCs

Where would you be keeping yours, Knid?

OP posts:
Anniegetyourgun · 16/11/2013 14:46

Spookily, XH lives on a boat nowadays. Not ever wanting to go near him has so far won out over the temptation to sneak over there with a gimlet.

JudyJudgypants · 16/11/2013 14:47

You could have a mini cruise (of the boat kind )
Then you could have the luxury of a proper cabin and decent food,
and he can go hang round the Captain and maybe get a go at standing on the bridge and twiddling something nautical.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 16/11/2013 14:53

Every time he so much as looks at you, just say 'No' and shake your head - eventually it will sink (he he he he he) in.

PacificDogwood · 16/11/2013 14:58

[facepalm] No

Like that?
