to want my jeans to FIT?!

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 13/11/2013 01:41

I bought a nice pair of jeans a while ago and I wore them out for the first time today. They're huge. They're literally falling off my nonexistent arse. I'm a size 8, tag says size 8. I have several different brands trousers and jeans in the same size, and these are the ONLY ones that don't fit! I can fit my entire fist between my tummy and the waistband.

It's been more than a month since I bought them so I can't return them. I have no idea why I didn't realise when I tried them on. I wasn't walking around but still...

I hate shopping. I hate clothes. I want to live in a nudist colony (kidding but it's tempting).

I don't think YANBU, but I'm convinced the fashion industry thinks you are.

I can never get trousers quite right. In order to fit my thighs and bum, it is obligatory that the waistband doesn't nip in to suit a healthy hip: waist ratio, but must sag outwards in such a way as to allow the world a view of the rear of your underwear. The crotch must also be not quite deep enough to solve this problem with a belt, and that any attempts to do so must be punished by a wedgie whenever you sit.

ShoeLaRue · 13/11/2013 05:50

And this is why I have gone over to M&S's pull on jeggings...

Disclaimer though, not sure they'd do a size small enough for you, as I'm a 16 and had to get the 12s!

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 13/11/2013 06:27

Hmmm, jeggings. Will my pants show through? I like my comfy cotton ones but they leave lines. I'm also tall--are there long/tall jeggings?

I'm smallish, but mostly I have no hips. all my fat goes to my boobs

I heard that the key to looking great in clothes is to have them altered to fit. That plain white t shirt bought off a rack in the high st looks fab on that Z list celeb and frumpy on you because she took it to a seamstress to be tailored to her shape first.

All those fashion shows do this too, even Gok Wan and Susie & Trinnie.

If you get a perfect fit on your clothes you will look great no matter what size you are.

Twattyzombiebollocks · 13/11/2013 06:59

Yanbu, I have awful problems with trousers (not the same as you, would that a size 8 fell off me! Size 18 possibly)
My issue is that being tall, I am long from crotch to waist, so standard size clothes always sit on my hips which are quite wide. So I get a size bigger to accommodate my hips, but they are then hugely baggy on my arse. Leg length is not an issue these days, many jeans come in long length, but clothing manufacturers haven't quite cottoned onto the idea that someone with a 34 inch inside leg is unlikely to have the same crotch to waist measurement as someone with a 28" inside leg"

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 13/11/2013 07:09

I think they are mislabeled TBH. I gave them to my mum who wears a 10-12.

It seems that clothing simply doesn't fit most women, regardless of their size and shape!

Last year I was in a size 14. I have lost a stone. This year I go back to the same shop to purchase clothes and have to buy a size 16 to fit... Go figure that out. The sizing in shops has gone to shite. I can't even use the excuse that I am fooling myself and I have got fatter - the scales say I have dropped a stone!

AliceinWinterWonderland · 13/11/2013 07:53

I've recently bought some jeggings (from Sainsburys for £12.50) but got them a size or two bigger, so they're not skin tight and fit like decent jeans. Because they're jeggings, they have the higher waist rather than the dropped waist that so many jeans have now that I hate. Inexpensive, look good as they're more "fitted", and definitely comfortable.

silverten · 13/11/2013 08:27

I think with tailored stuff you just have to shop around til you find the cut that fits.

I used to find shopping for jeans really tedious until I found that next bootcuts work for me.

maddening · 13/11/2013 09:04

The original standardisation of clothes sizing was based on an hour glass figure. They took measurements of women from all over the usa and tried to categorise - but you look at any selection of women and it is clear to see how hard it is to find a one shape fits all - and trousers ime (pattern making and dress making) are the hardest to fit as a standard - each persons hip and bum curves differently - from an hour glass figure, apple, pear or straight up and down.

popsnsqeeze · 13/11/2013 09:08

I agree with the jeggings idea. I have some from new look and they are great. High-ish elasticated waist so not too much muffin too, and the material is good too.

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2013 09:08

I have to wear belts with all my jeans and trousers.

Chesntoots · 13/11/2013 09:10

I have the same problem. My hips and thighs are a bigger size than my waist. The only jeans that fit me are the Levi curve. They just don't do boy fit. Think I might go for the alteration thing - will still be cheaper than Levi's!

ConfusedPixie · 13/11/2013 09:10

YANBU. I can never get well fitting jeans. Either too big or small around waist, or fit perfectly there but too long/short. Same with T-shirts. Yet the last time I voiced this on MN I was told that I was being ridiculous Hmm

I'm 8-10 on top and 10-12 on the bottom. I hate clothes shopping because I spend hours trying on jeans.

Ggsoph · 13/11/2013 09:11

I tried Levi's Curve jeans this week for the first time. They fit like a glove. They do different styles for different curves, I tried on Bold which has a higher smaller waist for people with big hips and a smaller waist. Am a convert but they didn't have my leg length in the sale Angry will be scouring eBay for months!

slickrick · 13/11/2013 09:13

I wear 7 jeans they fit nicely (im a size 26) you could also try Top shop.

I have a flat arse. I bought two pairs of the M&S Sculpt and Lift jeans and they have been great. I got the straight leg ones but they also sell a skinny version.

I got the size 10 which is my usual size. They are £35.

They seem to have run out of them in some stores though.

bluesbaby · 13/11/2013 09:36

Jeans are the worst for this.

I have a small waist and huge bum too, so always always get the gaping. I even get gaping in Levis now they've changed everything to the Curve system. Bold Curve still doesn't accommodate a waist - hip difference of 11". Surely there are enough of us big bottomed girls to require a designer to address these issues specifically?

elliejjtiny · 13/11/2013 09:44

I've given up on jeans as none of them seem to fit. I either can't do them up or they fall down. I have been wearing maternity leggings a size smaller than normal and dresses.

lookatmybutt · 13/11/2013 11:56

That's shame about the Bold Curve because I wanted to try them.

This is a really common problem for ladies of any size - if you have a shape you often end up with gapping in the waist while your butt and thighs get squeezed like billio.

Surprisingly I've had good results with mens jeans - I have no idea why!

Anyhoo, in various sizes over the years I've had good results with the following:

Falmers: used to be able to get 'em in Splatalan. Ebay jobby now I think
Levis 901: high waisted - generous in the hips but small in the waist. Can be straight legged or baggy. Vintage ebay jobby.
Gio Goi: MENS! An acquired taste, but I love the cut and the quality is nice. They have gone out of business as far as I know, but you can still get them on ebay brand new
Diesel: Good for slimmer girls with a butt. PRICEY!
All Saints: Same as above but it's not unusual for them to do vanity sizing. They are also cheaperer and you can often get older lines on ebay even cheaperer

Hope that's helpful to someone!

squeakytoy · 13/11/2013 12:11

Next jeans are always a good fit and the waistbands are reasonable high too. I hate jeans that hang on your hips.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 13/11/2013 12:15

I can never find them to fit properly, I have to buy a size 12 to fit round my bum but they are always enormous round the waist so I have to take them in otherwise they drop down and dangle round my hips, which is not a good look!

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 14:33

I've found French Connection jeans to be best suited to my hourglass shape - no gaping. Their skinny jeans are the best for me. I never thought about Levis Curve - will visit their store this weekend.

ImThinkingBoutMyDoorbell · 13/11/2013 14:57

At least you can get a waist taken in easily enough.

I have the opposite problem - no bum but a wobbly belly, and skinny legs, exactly like my mum. (Thanks mum.) if I buy a pair that fits around my waist/hips, they are really baggy on my thighs.

I bought a pair of J Brand cigarette jeans recently, finally a pair with a decent rise and they do cling to my legs, but fuck me, they're expensive! I can't spend that much on jeans every time. Those are strictly for good wear now.
