Photograph, posted on Facebook (and, therefore, in my eyes, endorsed) by a teacher of a group of people dressed up for Halloween. One person, "blacked up" (face mask, brownish make up on neck etc) one person "whitened up" (face mask, White make up) and a third person, also made up but in a brown colour. "Black man" wearing track suit, trainers and lots and lots of jewellery. "White woman" in curlers, Primark hoodie, track suit bottoms, heels. "Brown person" (an adult) in a child's buggy with a bottle, dummy and carrying what looks like a lunch box.

AIBU to think that this is racist and stereotyping of the worst kind. That they are dressed as a mixed race "chav" (not a word I would use but...) low income family who bottle feeds their baby, dresses badly and pushes a very old child around, who are all overweight etc.

Now I know these people. The area we live in is NOT at all multi cultural so there is unlikely to have been anyone offended at the party. But I am offended.

FWIW at least one of these people works with children on a daily basis.

Mumsnet, over to you.

As someone upthread said -
I think this is missing the point ...if they were supposed to be Kim Kardasian, Kanye West and North West it had absolutely nothing to do with whether someone was black or not - they had masks...they would have looked odd (even more odd?) if their necks didn't match the masks....a bit like people who put on thick foundation which is the wrong colour for their skin and have that tidemark...
Ignore all the fighting ...is it that offensive to try and match the mask?
Should people not dress up as a celeb unless they are the 'right' colour?
(agree the OP first impression of the chavs with the mixed race child would have highly offensive)

taffleee · 10/11/2013 19:56

Heart actually my friend has suffered extreme racism, but it was from racist bigots, and people, like you, taking offence on her behalf, where you have had no cause to but to indulge others 'fears' of mentioning anything that may 'offend', where there is really no offence meant, or taken -

It's fine to dress up as an famous black person. Say I dressed up as Beyoncé and wore a dress that she's famous for wearing, that's cool I like Beyoncé but I wouldn't have any need to black up to be her!
Also she is a real person not just a 'generic black person' where the joke is simply that a white person has made themselves black not to look like anyone.
And then what is even worse like in the op they dress up as generic black person plus make it an offensive stereotype of a black person.

Mylovelyboy · 10/11/2013 19:59

MrsDeVere are you feeling ok Confused

taffleee · 10/11/2013 20:00

Lovely meant no offence initially, but your total attacks have totally wound up the situation - back off, please, its not fair

unlucky83 · 10/11/2013 20:00

Thant - the OP said later they were supposed to be Kim kardasian, Kanye West & North West - which puts a very different slant on it I think?

Thants · 10/11/2013 20:00

Firstly how do you know who is and isn't white on this thread Mylovelyboy? Secondly the people that cause racism are racists.

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes · 10/11/2013 20:01

'Do you know who causes all the trouble with regard to racism.'

Yes. Racists.

Tinlegs · 10/11/2013 20:02

So, if you do not condone racism, that makes you a "fucking leftie white" does it? Really. There are many who are very far right of me who would also be appalled by this. I am no Labour voter - far from it. However, this is offensive, as are your comments mylovelyboy.

X post!

taffleee · 10/11/2013 20:02

Thants with that explanation, i have to agree, well put x

Thants · 10/11/2013 20:03

Unlucky83 they still blacked to even if they were being particular celebrities.

Tinlegs · 10/11/2013 20:03

My DS thought that was who they might be. However, one is definitely in "White make up" and Kim Kardashian does not have a fair complexion. The masks are not those of the characters, more blank black / white / brown faces with the necks made up to match.

taffleee · 10/11/2013 20:04

I have to ask then, what actually makes someone a racist???? I think a definition needs to be made???

Mylovelyboy · 10/11/2013 20:05

Thants see what you say. But I was talking about ie Michael Jackson. Blacking up and wearing one of his outfits etc is not stereotyping. Its who he was and plenty admired him. Alot of white people get offended on a lot of black peoples behalf I think. And I personally think this is dangerous. I dont think some black people like it to be honest and I dont blame them.

Thants · 10/11/2013 20:06

Taffleee I'm genuinely very happy that you have looked at it from another angle. Such a positive thing and shows how useful debate can be Smile

taffleee · 10/11/2013 20:08

Mylovely nothing you have said is racist at all, i can see you backing down to the total 'overhaul' of comments made against you. You said nothing wrong xxx

taffleee · 10/11/2013 20:10

Thants I look at everything from every angle!!!! I still don't think mylovely meant any offence at all!!

Heartbrokenmum73 · 10/11/2013 20:11

But you could dress up as Michael Jackson without blacking up. His outfits are so instantly recognisable - why would you need to black up too? That's just mockery, not admiration.

FreudiansSlipper · 10/11/2013 20:12

yes that is right Mylovelyboy

my family are fine with being called paki and told to go home they love it all just a bit of fun, being spat it, beaten up it is meant with no malice and all those oh so funny jokes at their expense why oh why did some white people join in and say enough is enough and try and put a stop to all this fun

sadly we still live in a society where a white voice is often still louder thankfully most people have enough intelligence to see how wrong any form of racism is that is why things have changed, sadly a few do not want that or to see people they view as inferior to be seen as equal

Heartbrokenmum73 · 10/11/2013 20:14

And at what point were you called a cunt, mylovelyboy, that you took it on the chin so admirably? Cos I've been through the thread and I can't find it.

Thants · 10/11/2013 20:14

Taffleee someone is racist when they believe people of another race are one homogenous group who they can stereotype as all acting/being the same rather than seeing them as individuals they therefore see them as different or other to their themselves and their race.
