Do British people swear a lot

Watching a film where the supporting British "best friend" character swears every two seconds. Is this how we're perceived? I know Australians have a reputation for being sweary...

Fuck yes Grin

PersonalClown · 09/11/2013 22:45

It's because it sounds better coming from a Brit.

Bloody is great in a cut glass English accent. (see Independence Day)

CailinDana · 09/11/2013 22:47

God no. I find Bruitish people annoyingly unsweary and very easily offended by words like shit crap and bollocks, which I use daily. Irish people are far more sweary.

DanglingChillis · 09/11/2013 22:47

ATruth beat me to it!

Are you watching The Wedding Date? 4 weddings is famous for the swearing as well. But think about american guests on chatshows, they are always shocked at what they can say on tv here.

GobbySadcase · 09/11/2013 22:48

Fuck yeah Smile

picnicbasketcase · 09/11/2013 22:49

Fuckaduck. I don't think we swear that much really, but it just looks like it to people in other countries because it's on telly more.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/11/2013 22:50

I watched the DVD of the stage play "Black Watch" last night, every other fucking word was swearing.

Phineyj · 09/11/2013 22:50

Yes, I am not overly sweary but always feel like the rudest person in the world on stays in America and Canada Grin

OddBoots · 09/11/2013 22:51

The British people I know don't, but I'm sure there are plenty who do.

Mylovelyboy · 09/11/2013 22:52

I love it when really posh people swear.

Phineyj · 09/11/2013 22:53

Also we can swear without other nations even knowing. There was that bit in 'Buffy' where Spike called someone a wnker and no-one even knew what it meant Grin. Bgger isn't rude either.

squoosh · 09/11/2013 22:54

OldLady Black Watch also has a more than healthy proliferation of 'cunts' too!

squoosh · 09/11/2013 22:55

Americans do not say cunt. Ever.

SeaSickSal · 09/11/2013 22:55

Down south yes, up north much more prudish.

picnicbasketcase · 09/11/2013 22:56

Why do Americans seem to produce twat as twot?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/11/2013 22:57

squoosh, in more ways than one! Grin Brilliant stageplay, shame I missed the live version. I did wonder if some folk would need subtitling for other audiences...

PaperSeagull · 09/11/2013 22:58

The word "cunt" is very offensive in the US. It has an entirely different cultural weight and is seen as misogynistic in the extreme.

Hopasholic · 09/11/2013 22:58

No we fucking don't! Wink

jellyboatsandpirates · 09/11/2013 23:00

I'm Oop North and hardly ever swear. Seriously. It's not big and it's definitely not clever.
Makes you sound like a bit fick and like you haven't got a good vocabulary to hand.

TigOldBitties · 09/11/2013 23:01

Most British people I know, myself included swear a lot.

Going to various other countries for work, particularly the US makes me feel like a right potty mouth!

Try saying cunt in the US, totally different reaction to here, even if you compare it to people in this country who aren't sweary.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/11/2013 23:01

PaperSeagull, I have vague memories of Erica Jung talking about that, and settling on the word "quim" instead. Probably in Fear of Flying.

HorsePetal · 09/11/2013 23:01

I was very conscious of my language on recent trip to America as I am capable of rather colourful language and didn't want to offend.

I'm under the impression that Americans swear less and also try to avoid blasphemous words such as 'god' or 'Christ'.

Do they understand the meaning of cunt?

ScarletLady02 · 09/11/2013 23:03

I've heard some American rappers say "cunt". "English" swear words sound wrong in an American accent I think.....funny as fuck in an Aussie accent though. Listen to Chopper's Hip Hop album (yes really) there's some excellent swearing there ("Shut your fucking mouth cunt" in a broad Australian accent sounds EPIC).

Personally a swear like a fucking trooper Grin

Rentahoose · 09/11/2013 23:07

"Do they understand the meaning of cunt?"

Think they must do.

Ever seen "Curb your Enthusiasm's" Beloved Aunt episode?

eggyweggies · 09/11/2013 23:08

Yes, it is the wedding date Grin
