Do British people swear a lot

Watching a film where the supporting British "best friend" character swears every two seconds. Is this how we're perceived? I know Australians have a reputation for being sweary...

As a teacher, I'm not supposed to swear at school. I quite happily swear at home, so it's a bit tricky at work. Since English is also my second language, there are words that I personally don't perceive as terribly rude...until people look at me utterly aghast.
I used "git" once to describe a character in a book,...and was duly informed by my class that: "Well, Miss,...it's not that bad, but you shouldn't say it at school."
I went to school abroad and casual swearing was never an issue. I find the British terribly stuck up in that respect, and a bit hypocritical. You get told off for using mild swear words at school,...and at home/on TV it's suddenly ok.
