To wonder how much your gas and electricity bills are?

I have just received my bill for the last 6 months, which has come in at a huge £2095 - admittedly for both gas and electricity - but it still seems very high to me.

We have a 5 bed house and we do run a gas Aga, but even allowing for this, it seems a lot. I was thinking it might be better to change suppliers.
I am currently with Scottish Power. They estimate our annual bill for next year at nearly £5,700 but will graciously give us a discount of 10% as we pay by direct debit.

I was wondering what your average gas and electricity spend is and whether some suppliers are better than others.

That seems extortionate! We have a much smaller place but around £80 quarterly. So say £300-400 a year

We have a 3 bed-semi and combined bills come in at about £1300 a year. I do have the heating on a lot though.

Draughty, rambling 5 bed with gas Aga too and I am sad to say that's around what we pay Sad just swapped to get a (marginally) better deal with NPower but DD for dual fuel is £431 it is punishing as we barely have the heating on and it is always chilly. If you find anything better please share Grin

ilovepowerhoop · 09/11/2013 10:02

you need to get your actual usage and use that to compare other suppliers as a monthly payment means nothing as you could be under/over paying. We were paying £145 per month for a 4 bed detached with npower and are moving to a fixed plan with EDF.

Npower estimated that we will use 5251kWh of electricity and 17681kWh of gas in the next 12 months so they were the figures I used on the price comparison websites

ilovepowerhoop · 09/11/2013 10:07

p.s. the cheaper deals tend to be where you take gas/electric from the same supplier on monthly direct debit and run the account online.

confused, moneysupermarket, uswitch, gocompare are some of the places that you can do price comparisons.

I also joined the www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub - they give £30 cashback 3 months after switching too.

Thanks, I think I will need to shop around!

We went for a higher standing/daily rate and a cheaper price per unit IYSWIM and come December we close all the shutters and wear thermals

mumofweeboys · 09/11/2013 10:13

When we lived in a farm house we had an oil aga that wqs hugely expensive. Id say thats prob about right. I live in 3 bed terrace and combined fuel is about £140

mumofweeboys · 09/11/2013 10:15

A month that is

PinkParsnips · 09/11/2013 10:23

Wow that does sound a lot!

We have a 3 bed detatched new build and pay 83 a month for combined gas and electric with N Power so about 1000 ish a year.

There's only two of us though and we never use a dryer, don't have heating on a timer just on when needed etc.

NoComet · 09/11/2013 10:27

Oil and electric looks like coming in close on £4000 next year. OK we have the heating on most of the time, computers up continually, a big fish tank and it's a big old 3 bed detached house. But it's still a lot of money.

youbethemummylion · 09/11/2013 10:40

I work for an energy provider and have dealt with several cases where people have got rid of their aga's and seen there bills more than halve. Depends how much you love your aga I suppose.

OHforDUCKScake · 09/11/2013 10:42

I pay £87 per month for both gas and electric, in a small 2 bed house.

Artandco · 09/11/2013 10:53

Oh and the £80 ish a quarter figure is based on 2 bed flat. Tumble dryer on whenever and heating on high all the time

4 bed Victorian semi, £4000 last year. We are skint.

puddeycat · 09/11/2013 11:01

We have a 4 bed terraced house on a prepay card key. Spend about 40 a month on each in winter and in summer when we don't have heating on 10 on electric a week and 5 on gas at most.

TheMinionsHaveThePhonebox · 09/11/2013 11:14

3 bed flat and we pay £50 for gas and £35 - £45 for electricity each month. Just moved to the EDF plan that's fixed for the next 4 winters, but i'm assuming we won't stay with them that long.

I usually check the comparison sites every 6 months or so and if I can save £120 a year or more, then I change supplier.

JinglingRexManningDay · 09/11/2013 11:21

Small 3 bed house and its about €200 every two months for electric and €80 every two months for gas but we only have it on for an hour a day.

BeCoolFucker · 09/11/2013 11:22

MSE has and energy savings calculator. Put your figures/usage into it and they will advise best deal to change. Act quickly though as some great deals are limited.

By bills for last 3 months totalled £100 - one bed flat.

Feenie · 09/11/2013 11:31

3 bedroom detached - £170 a month for gas and electricity.

onedogandababy · 09/11/2013 11:43

3 bed end terrace, home most of the day every day. Combined gas & elec is 112 per month.

Recently went up from 58 per month. Am guessing it's because it was cold long into spring & I have a toddler, as well as getting fed up of not being able to see anything with all the old cfl bulbs. Should go and buy a job lot more!

laza222 · 09/11/2013 11:56

About £85 a month. We live in a one bed flat but have no double glazing so it leaks heat everywhere!
