To wonder how much your gas and electricity bills are?

I have just received my bill for the last 6 months, which has come in at a huge £2095 - admittedly for both gas and electricity - but it still seems very high to me.

We have a 5 bed house and we do run a gas Aga, but even allowing for this, it seems a lot. I was thinking it might be better to change suppliers.
I am currently with Scottish Power. They estimate our annual bill for next year at nearly £5,700 but will graciously give us a discount of 10% as we pay by direct debit.

I was wondering what your average gas and electricity spend is and whether some suppliers are better than others.

4 bed old, detached house, some rooms not used as I live alone and am generally away from Sunday to Friday. I currently pay €100 a month for gas, that is hot water & central heating and €48 per minth for electricity.
So that is €1776 per annum. At the moment.

breatheslowly · 09/11/2013 12:19

Modern 5 bed detached - about £1500 for combined electricity and gas. We are on a price fix for the next 18 months and always look at price comparisons when our deal runs out.

BakerStreetSaxRift · 09/11/2013 12:23

2 bed tenement, last quarterly bill, combined, was £125.

I'm now feeling that's pretty good.

It's double that in the winter.

MrsCakesPremonition · 09/11/2013 12:23

We pay around £100 a month, dual fuel.

I've been following this thread which has lots of great ideas for reducing electricity spend. Might be worth a read.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/11/2013 12:25

It's the unit rate that matters, not the DD.

Eg a high user with a low unit rate will pay more than a low user with a low rate yet they might be ndn with similar size house etc.

MavisGrind · 09/11/2013 12:33

Bloody hell that seems a lot! I have a 4/5 bed 250 year old detached and budget £1800 a year for gas/electricity/logs. It is well insulated and I've got mostly double glazed windows. I'm also quite stingy with the heating.

But surely that £2095 covers most of the warmest summer for ages so I dread to think what your winter bills will be

MrsCakesPremonition · 09/11/2013 12:39

Unless you rate is ridiculously high, it sounds like you could be using 5 times more than the average home.
Is it the gas or the electricity part of your bill which is really high? Are the meters working correctly? Can you go through the house room by room and look at what you are using and when?

Is someone growing weed in your attic? Or more seriously, could someone be nicking your electricity?

MrsCakesPremonition · 09/11/2013 12:42

Sorry - meant to add that switching suppliers to a slightly lower rate might just be nibbling at the edges of your problem until you understand exactly who you are using all that fuel.

ohshitimlate · 09/11/2013 12:43

4 bed modem detached £105 per month combined. Eon

Flossyfloof · 09/11/2013 12:43

I am with Sainsburys (actually British Gas), didn't realise that when I signed up with them. I got my bill last week. I pay £110 per month for both I think. The bill came in to the tune of £1399.16 for electric only. Turns out they read the meter incorrectly but I actually still owe them £174 for electric on top of what I have paid. God knows what that figure will be by the end of the year. I am quite worried. The deal runs out in Jan so in a couple of weeks I will be looking to change.
I need to go out now but I will be really interested to see other people's experiences. I am lucky because I can afford the bills but it must be a great worry for some.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/11/2013 12:45

I thought ours was high at about 2kpa for a 4bed detached
I think it must be the Aga that's doing it for you
We used to live in a 5bed farmhouse with an oil aga and it seems to inhale fuel

Dolcelatte · 09/11/2013 12:50

I am not sure of the breakdown between gas and electricity. I will check. We also have private drainage with an electric pump, so I wonder if that makes a difference.

We have a four storey 4 bed Victorian semi and we pay £163 per month duel fuel with EDF. We are also currently in credit by nearly £400 which should help us through winter. We have the heating in alot, we like it warm and I work from home part time. Also with 3 DC I do alot of washing and drying. Sounds like we are doing well compared to some of you!

Bubbles1066 · 09/11/2013 13:08

3 bed end of terrace. £120 per month for gas and electric so £1400 odd a year. Sounds like you pay a lot!

youbethemummylion · 09/11/2013 14:09

Yep the drainage pump will be using a lot. With that and the aga I would definitely give your supplier a call and see what they can do it may be a 3 phase elec meter would be better for you.

nitrox · 09/11/2013 14:24

3 bed, old big house with high ceilings.. I work from home too with machinery running, PC, lights, heating etc..

2 adults live here and we don't scrimp on heating, showering times etc..

£1400 a year for both Gas and Electric.

LonelyGoatherd · 09/11/2013 14:28

4 bed new build, 75pcm for gas and elec, eon. They predict this will cover the coming winter - hope so. Really careful about usage, but usually at home (young dc, WAH) and use tumble daily.

Cherriesarered · 09/11/2013 15:59

In old Victorian house with gas Aga and 5 bedrooms. Last year the bill for gas and electricity came to £3000. We weren't even warm :-(

KitCat26 · 09/11/2013 16:03

Bloody hell that's a lot!

Last quarter electric was £119 (electric cooker & shower, plus usual other electrics).
Summer quarter gas was £35! (May-July)

We're in a three bed detached. We had a gas combi boiler fitted in March, its working out cheaper than oil.

Pukkapik · 09/11/2013 16:51

OP, We're Scottish Power too...just reduced to £200 per month for both gas and electricity, four bed four floor Victorian house. We made an effort to cut back on fuel usage and it worked...our bills used to £33 a month dearer.

Pukkapik · 09/11/2013 16:52

Forgot to add, we are also direct debit with discount too.

Mumof3xx · 09/11/2013 16:53

About 1500 a year

Mumof3xx · 09/11/2013 16:54

And we are in a 3 bed terrace house

Geckos48 · 09/11/2013 16:55

We put around 7.50 a week in electric and 4/5 a week in gas

At most 10 a week electric and 5 a week gas. We have a wood burner which costs us around 300 a year for wood.

RufusandJasper · 09/11/2013 16:57

3 bed detached house, £75 per month for both gas and electric. We both work Monday - Friday though so don't use much energy during the week I suppose
