AIBU?

AIBU to try to lose 7 stone in 14 months?

Hello everyone,

AIBU in thinking I can lose 7 stones in 14 month (1/2 stone a month) by eating healthily, and exercising a bit more?

I'm female, 5ft 7", 18st 13.5lbs (prety much 19st), size 22.

I miss all the sports I used to do, my knee is really bad and won't heal after I damaged it cycling, and I won't go to Alton towers anymore as I'm too embarrased after the last time when I nearly didn't get the bars down on my tummy.

I've tried all sorts of diets, even had a gastric band a few years ago.. it worked but went wrong and slipped and I've piled the weight back on, silly me Sad.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Would love to hear some inspirational stories or to at least feel like I'm not the biggest freak in the world Confused... I can't even seem to find a winter coat I like that isn't knee length or a ski style jacket.

It's so sad really, I'm 30 now and spent my 20's dieting, I don't want to do the same in my 30's. I don't have children yet, so I need to do this now!

I love sports, extreme sports in particular like snowboarding and scuba diving and I'm pretty depressed as I can't do them very easily now and don't want to book any holidays because of my weight.

Anyhow, I'm rambling..

Thanks for reading Blush

To lose that amount that quickly is totally possible but will require extreme willpower - and not possible just with "healthy eating". Many ways to do it (calorie counting, sw, low carb etc) but all require some degree of willpower....

Forever, I would dispute that. I have not followed any specific diet yet have managed to lose over 3 stone in just under 6 months. All I have done is healthy eating and exercise.

My main issue is that when I follow a set 'diet' I get fed up of counting calories and points etc.. also, a lot of what I want to eat, meats, are probably adding up to too many calories, but as I'm cutting back on the carbs a bit, it's healthier for me. (if that makes sense).

For instance, last year I set myself a 1400 day calorie diet, I religiously stuck to it for 6 weeks and lost 3lbs! Why? Because it was full of carbs, Boots healthy lunch range, pasta, bread, cereal etc.. even though I logged and tracked everything, it didn't work for me. Similar results from WW, and I fear SW will be the same.

Low carb, it's too restrictive and make me miserable and moody.

So I think I have a good grasp of healthy eating in general to work from.

I think foods sold as "low fat/healthy" are actually the work of the devil as you assume that they are fine to eat and good for you but when you start to look at the content of them they are often far from healthy.

I think healthy eating is a good approach as long as you actually stop to think about your diet as a whole and making sure you are getting the right amounts of the right things

OP and all those lurking
all "diet" foods are best avoided
you want butter, have butter
look at the ingredients

But if you eat other grains such as rye, spelt, whole rice etc. you don't feel deprived (you can get wheat free breads from Waitrose) I don't feel deprived just a lot healthier than when I eat wheat! If you have the time you can make your bread too with wheat free flour. I make lovely cakes and pastry with ground almonds, maple syrup etc. it's not a prison sentence if you look into it!!

I couldn't agree more Sirzy, it's evil stuff and I now buy normal Greek Yoghurt but have less as it tastes so nice anyhow.. same with butter and I stick with semi-skimmed milk too.

All diet stuff is so bad, but it's taken me years to realise this and not keep buying all the 'diet' food that has most likely contributed to weight gain rather than help me. Hmm

Talkinpeace - Yes, exactly! I'm trying to eat as natural as possible without limiting myself too much. So lots of fresh food and not too much of the pre-prepared garbage.

ppeat - Morrisons near us do a lovely rye and spelt bread, I'm going to get some next time I go, I do eat wholemeal seed batch type bread but I have to be careful as it bloats me quite badly. Sticking to potatoes, rice and that at the moment to see if it helps. Don't temp me to get a bread maker, I have soooo much unused kitchen stuff - including a £100 Juicer Blush.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow now, looking forward to giving my poor bell a rest and hopefully ending the day with a sense of pride!

I wonder should I bother having breakfast, I think I'd really rather not it makes me ravenous for the day?
Anyone any ideas? (Is will be a fast day btw, ordinarily I'll be eating breakfast)

I won't last the day if I have breakfast, gonna have a 250kcal lunch, same for dinner and just get through it somehow.. Or have you any slim and save left?

Breakfast often kickstarts hunger for me. These days I eat only dinner on FDs but many divide their 500 cals between lunch and dinner. Try and make the meals protein and veggies to fill you up. Eggs and green veg are good. Come onto the main thread and join in the wider discussion.

I do have slim and save left but I'm not sure I want to waste calories on shakes that I wouldn't ordinarily drink you know?
I'm thinking of doing similar, splitting them. Maybe have an omlette for lunch etc, see how I go! I'm not very prepared but I'm totally determined to be able to report back tomorrow and say I did it!!

I will join the wider discussion I just feel like the new girl haha!

Bssh How do you 'do' the fast day? do you drink unlimited water and or tea\coffees? Do you split them so e.g one on Thurs and one on Mon.?

Also how do you cope with the 'eat when you're hungry' of P.M.'s rules?

Report
BsshBossh · 11/11/2013 09:46

ppeatfruit, on fast days I drink loads of water and green teas plus the odd mug of black coffee all day then eat a tiny meal in the evening. I guess I go 24 hours with only liquids. I fast in this way on Mondays and Thursday.

I'm no longer bothered by hunger and have found I can go a long time without actually feeling genuine physical hunger so on non-fast days I am able to eat two to three normal meals (breakfast sometimes, lunch then dinner) with no snacking in between.

ppeatfruit · 11/11/2013 13:05

Thanks Bssh that's interesting you must 've felt hungry to begin with? Do you eat healthily on non fast days?

Have skimmed this thread but not sure anyone has mentioned the Dukan Diet yet?
It is AMAZING! Very high protein and veg (no fruit, carbs or sugar to start with Sad ) but you literally lose weight from Day One and you can eat as much as you like which keeps me happy and makes it easier.
My MIL lost 35kgs in 7 months and my DH lost his "pregnancy" weight Confused of 3stone in 2,5 months.
Best diet I've ever used and will always use it from now on if I need to shed a few pounds.
No weighing, measuring or counting calories, it's so easy!
If it worked for the Middletons for Kate's wedding, it cannot be too bad!

mulberry I could not do Dukan as I'm allergic to cutting out food groups Grin
ppeatfruit I've been the same weight for very nearly a year but still fast twice a week for the health reasons. I never envisage stopping.

Be careful with 5:2, watch out for side effects. It seems it may not work as well for women, though plenty of women have had success with it.

Have you had your thyroid tested?

sorry but that is NOT what 30,000 posts on the 5:2 threads have shown.

I meant o say 'some women', but looking around on 5:2 forum sites, women do seem to suffer with a lot more side effects than men, in general. It's sensible to be cautious when starting any diet imo.
