To have some homemade pate at a restaurant on my birthday?

lola0106 · 05/11/2013 16:11

I must admit I haven't stuck to a lot of the 'pregnancy rules' Blush but I have avoided pate, even though I'm really craving it, because someone really made me worry about it! I will be 30 weeks on my birthday and DH is taking me to a really nice restaurant where they do an amazing homemade pate with crusty bread... AIBU to have it and not feel guilty?

I wouldn't , because I know someone whose whole wedding party got ill from undercooked pate at a posh hotel!

Onlyconnect · 05/11/2013 16:18

I would. The risk is very low. There are much more risky things that everyone does without thinking.

Strikeuptheband · 05/11/2013 16:19

I wouldn't although there are probably hundreds who will now come on here and moan about them not being an incubator, my body my choice etc. but I wouldn't.
To give you some background, my firstborn was stillborn due to preeclampsia. I also had some food poisoning (salmonella and e-coli) in my system and I will now always wonder if that contributed to his death.

MrsHowardRoark · 05/11/2013 16:20

I would and I'm also 30 weeks pregnant.

The issue with pate is the liver as it contains high levels of vitamin A. As long as the rest of your diet is normal a one off isn't going to do any harm.

But then I'm another one who ignores many of the guidelines.

Dobbiesmum · 05/11/2013 16:20

I didn't stick to many of the rules either but I did follow the pate one, it made my first taste post baby all the more sweeter! Grin

DameDeepRedBetty · 05/11/2013 16:22

lola I fear you will still feel guilty no matter what us lot say.

God I wanted runny french cheese when I was up-duffed! I demolished most of a whole Brie when finally I was allowed to eat unpasteurised cheeses etc again.

Strikeuptheband · 05/11/2013 16:22

There is also a risk of listeria MrsHowardRoark

Dobbiesmum · 05/11/2013 16:24

The day after I gave birth I had a huge portion of pate, almost an entire wedge of Brie, champagne and then DH brought home some mussels. I spent a good hour in heaven...

littlepeas · 05/11/2013 16:31

I don't think it's worth it personally - it's only a few weeks to abstain. It's up to you though, obviously.

CoffeeTea103 · 05/11/2013 16:33

Well you know the risks, why chance it. Your choice though.

arethereanyleftatall · 05/11/2013 16:35

Just not worth the risk imo .
I had a hamper ready for after birth with champagne, runny cheese and pate and chunky bread. Loved it.

MrsHowardRoark · 05/11/2013 16:35

Still your chance of getting it is extremely low.

As with many things you have to weigh up the risks and do what sits right with you.

Minty82 · 05/11/2013 16:37

I would - and did, a few weeks ago when a friend made a fabulous pate for a dinner party. I only had a half portion; the risks are linked to over exposure to Vitamin D and I don't think a one off taste is likely to do any harm.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/11/2013 16:38

I wouldn't. Low risk, high stakes. Not my sort of gamble.

BlackbeltinBS · 05/11/2013 16:38

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15990940

I wouldn't risk it personally. Pate is one of those things where there are so many opportunities for poor food hygiene or storage to make you very ill to say nothing of the risks in the food itself (see above).

I had horrendous food poisoning in Paris (having followed all the UK pregnancy rules!) at about 30 weeks. I can promise you I have never felt so ill or so worried in my life, I could have kissed the ground when the Eurostar came out of the tunnel in Kent. And that was knowing I'd followed the rules but still got ill - I'd have been in a dreadful state if I thought I could have avoided it.

MrTumblesKnickers · 05/11/2013 16:39

I would.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 05/11/2013 16:42

11 years ago when I was pregnant with DD1 I would have.

Now, having taken a couple of food hygiene courses, I wouldn't.

Up to you OP, but I wouldn't risk it. Listeria is nasty.

Baazinga · 05/11/2013 16:43

I wouldn't - I had food poisoning and miscarried my first.
It upset me during my subsequent pregnancies when people told me I was being silly following the food guidelines, but I blame myself for losing my first baby.
The guidelines are there for a reason and I don't think its worth the risk.

Ursula8 · 05/11/2013 16:47

I wouldn't, because if anything, God forbid, did go wrong, I would be blaming myself forever, even if it was nothing to do with the damn stinking pate.
Lucky for me pate and runny cheese make me heave anyway.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/11/2013 16:52

Why not make yourself some chicken liver pate? It is very easy to make, and you would know for sure that it had been made in hygienic circumstances - and as others have said, if you have it just the once, the vitamin A won't be a problem.

Justforlaughs · 05/11/2013 16:57

I wouldn't. I love pate but then there are also other options on a menu that I would enjoy and would enjoy far more without worrying about the possible side affects and although the risk is admittedly very low - I would never forgive myself if things went wrong. Enjoy your meal though, whatever you decide Flowers (not Wine Grin)

plummyjam · 05/11/2013 17:02

It's up to you but having known someone who had listeria during pregnancy with an unhappy outcome I wouldn't take the risk.

I might have a little glass of wine though if it was my birthday Smile

misspontypine · 05/11/2013 17:46

I would. I ate pate fairly regularly when pregnant, I live in Sweden and the recommend you eat pate as it's high in iron. Pregnancy vitamins also contain vitamin a ( I had UK pregnancy vitamins as they were cheaper)

Infant mortality is lower than tge UK, I havn't heard of any vitamin a problems in babies here.

thehorridestmumintheworld · 05/11/2013 17:58

Different issue but a phillipina friend told me the reason her Ds is so intelligent is because she ate a lot of peanuts while pregnant and recommended them :)
Don't have the pate you will be worried all night, maybe a nice pud instead.

gastrognome · 05/11/2013 18:00

I wouldn't either. I also know someone who caught listeria in pregnancy and ended up very ill, with a premature and very ill baby (luckily both were ok in the end).
I wouldn't enjoy it anyway, would be too busy worrying. But obviously it's up to you.
