my husband seems to think its perfectly alright to go to his study and sit on ebay on the other side of our fairly large house when 'doing bathtime'.

i just dont think you leave children alone in the bath and it makes me really uncomfortable - aibu??

dh thinks im being, and i quote 'ridiculous'

no yanbu. your other half is. i think he is being ridiculous

ChipAndSpud · 04/11/2013 20:10

Your DH is being ridiculous not you!

I would be livid if my DH left the room whilst DS was I. The bath, let alone sat on eBay on the other side of the house!

Yanbu!

CoffeeTea103 · 04/11/2013 20:11

Yanbu , that's very irresponsible.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 04/11/2013 20:13

Your DH is being U and putting your child in danger.
www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/patientinstructions/000154.htm

Standing up and slipping, cracking head or other injury, turning on scalding taps, unattended razors, medicine cabinet... Ffs. He's an idiot.

sleeplessbunny · 04/11/2013 20:13

YADNBU I think that's dangerous and it would really worry me. I can't imagine leaving DD in the bath on her own

HairyPorter · 04/11/2013 20:13

Yanbu. We bring laptops into the bathroom and work there while DS plays!

onlyfortonight · 04/11/2013 20:14

That is totally unacceptable. Whilst I agree that you don't have to be in the room constantly - ie it is fairly safe to nip out and get a towel - it is the work of just a moment for your 3 year old to stand up and slip. He would have no idea that an accident had just occurred, and if your child was knocked unconscious then it would be all too late when he went back in to check.

I'd be having strong words...

FamiliesShareGerms · 04/11/2013 20:14

No, he's being ridiculous. It's one thing to pop out of the bathroom eg to get a fresh towel, quite another to go and get engrossed in ebaying. If nothing else, it's easy to be there longer than you realise, leaving the child shivering in a now tepid bath.

2tiredtoScare · 04/11/2013 20:14

3 is too young, yanbu

WillYouDoTheFandango · 04/11/2013 20:14

Your DP is being a fucking idiot. Would he leave them alone in a swimming pool or by a pond? I don't run for a towel never mind go in another room to use eBay!

Shakirasma · 04/11/2013 20:15

YANBU

When bathing a child of only 3, he should not be putting a toe outside of the bathroom let alone naffing off to the other side of the house.

You need serious words, he is putting your child in danger!

I used to be a social worker and we had a very sad case of a nearly 3 year old child drowning in the bath whilst a otherwise very sensible mother got her clothes sorted in the room next door. The child knocked their head and fell into the water. It was horribly sad. It happens so quickly and quietly

spritesoright · 04/11/2013 20:16

He's not only being unreasonable, he is putting your child at serious risk. Totally not acceptable.
Tell him to sit on the toilet and use a laptop or iPad like the rest of us :)

hettienne · 04/11/2013 20:16

YANBU

My bathroom is off the kitchen so I leave DS in there while I am pottering about, but I'm only a few feet away and can hear him/talk to him.

mummybare · 04/11/2013 20:19

Wow, YADNBU.

Abitannoyedatthis · 04/11/2013 20:19

He is a twat. My Mum used to leave me and my sister alone in the bath because she could hear us playing when she was in the kitchen next door. Then she found out acquaintances had lost one child like that, three kids but two had watched the other one drown and did nothing. You can drown with the equivalent to a small cup of water, it is not worth the risk.

The other comment I would make is that those days of bathtime, splashing , singing, bubble bath etc are over very soon, so make the most of quality time with the kids.

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 20:21

I know a 3 yo who drowned in the bath Sad I am absolutely militant on this. DS is 8 now and while he is at the stage of wanting some more privacy, I still need to leave the door open and have someone in that part of the house while he is having a bath.

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 20:21

Clearly therefore YANBU. But your husband is.

LtEveDallas · 04/11/2013 20:23

DD was left alone in the bath from about 18 months, but I was only ever ironing in the room next door and would have heard if anything happened to her (constant, and I mean constant chattering!). There is no way I would have moved any further, and even now DD is 8 I don't leave her completely alone - I tend to MN from my bedroom whilst she is in the bath.

PumpkinPie2013 · 04/11/2013 20:24

YANBU your husband is being totally irresponsible and putting your child in danger.

I have a 3 year old nephew and wouldn't dream of leaving him alone in a bath nor would anyone else who may bath him. He's far too inquisitive and mischevious to be left without doing something that could cause serious injury or worse.

I'd be having very strong words!

digerd · 04/11/2013 20:24

DH is being irresponsible and obviously hasn't a clue about the dangers of a 3 year-old left alone in the bathShock
YANBU he is .

grobagsforever · 04/11/2013 20:27

DH is being very U. I will nip across the hall and change while DD aged 3 is in the bath but I talk to her constantly.

KatherinaMinola · 04/11/2013 20:28

That's not 'doing bathtime'. That's doing his own thing while he leaves your child in danger.

Is he irresponsible in other ways?

toobreathless · 04/11/2013 20:28

YANBU. I do not leave DD, 2.6, alone in the bath at all. I dress & change her younger sister on a towel about 1.5 metres away on the hall floor so I can see DD1 the entire time.

It only takes seconds.
