To suddenly be frightened of the coming winter?

I think it's just hit me how hard winter is going to be. I'm sat downstairs now (watching a film tut tut get to bed) and its really cold. Today was cold too and we had to have the heating on and off all day. I thought we would manage with maybe once a day for a bit and make do with layers but I hadn't realised how much the house would leak heat and how cold laminate floor is. And the temperature is obviously going to get colder over the next few months.

AIBU to be scared about the next few months?

Said that this morning - Roll on Spring!.
I'm not so much frightened as grumpy. It being dark by 5pm is already depressing me and I feel I it should be bed-time in 2 hours.
I am not cold but not warm either and resent the gas costs.

im going to get an electric blanket for ours. my electricity bills tend to be in credit, so I think ll work out cheaper.

question-ive HAD to put radiators on abit, were hacking coughing with our asthmas.

only want it in lr and bedroom so to turn others off is it clockwise or anti on the knob thing?
c

QueenStromba · 05/11/2013 18:26

Apparently electric blankets cost pennies to run - probably about a cent a minute. Feather duvets are also a good invesment.

QueenStromba · 05/11/2013 18:26

Anti clockwise for off.

I was on to my energy company last week because they wrongly charged me for a replacement payment card. I felt very petty doing it over a fiver but it's the principle and a day's worth of heat!

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 05/11/2013 18:46

Come and join us in the land of prepardness Zombie Winter

BurlyShassey · 05/11/2013 18:50

thanks. anyone else having probs with mn? mine keeps disappearing!

QueenStromba · 05/11/2013 18:55

A fiver a day for heating! No wonder EDF tried to put my DD up by £70 a month when I was in credit! Have you tried leaving it on constantly on low?

ThornSayre · 05/11/2013 19:01

Well probably not quite that much. This year DH and I are both working from home so I expect it to go up. I always pre-pay throughout the summer so I am £200 in credit even though I hate the thought of the bastards making interest on my money.

My sister puts £30 on her meter every week in winter so I was basing it on that.

I think I will try the constant low heat when it goes on properly.

QueenStromba · 05/11/2013 19:09

It's worth a go for a day or two since it's so much easier to see how much it's costing you when you have a prepayment meter. Aside from the massive energy it takes to be constantly reheating the system from nothing, it's much easier to deal with lower temperatures when it's consistent rather than changing every few hours. 17 is perfectly pleasant on a spring day but would feel cold in the middle of summer. Equally it feels cold when you've recently warmed the house to midsummer temperatures.

Topseyt · 05/11/2013 19:22

Goats are warm blooded creatures. Snuggle up to a goat on the sofa to keep warm.

Put an extra goat on the bed. Grin

ThornSayre · 05/11/2013 19:48

Thank you. I'm on a normal meter for gas but that makes sense Smile

ThornSayre · 05/11/2013 19:49

That was to QueenStromba, not Topseyt Grin

QueenStromba · 05/11/2013 19:53

Silly me - I read payment card as prepayment card!

itchychin · 05/11/2013 20:09

Psst! Lady with goats in her house currently on channel 4 Wink
