To suddenly be frightened of the coming winter?

I think it's just hit me how hard winter is going to be. I'm sat downstairs now (watching a film tut tut get to bed) and its really cold. Today was cold too and we had to have the heating on and off all day. I thought we would manage with maybe once a day for a bit and make do with layers but I hadn't realised how much the house would leak heat and how cold laminate floor is. And the temperature is obviously going to get colder over the next few months.

AIBU to be scared about the next few months?

You can collect the goats droppings and form them into extra insulation bricks, no?

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 14:32

Absolutely, Wilson - there's no end to the possibilities.

Not read all thread as on break but check out freecyle for carpet rugs old curtains I use a set of curtains at the top of stairs (live in flat above shop so have stairs to flat ) it stops draughts etc you can use them on the outside of lounge doors to keep heat in or double up the window curtains

What noise does a goat make?

In other news, goat droppings can be dangerous!!

www.vnews.com/news/8156580-95/manure-pile-spontaneously-combusts-at-windsor-goat-farm

But OTOH, spontaneously combustible goat droppings would certainly keep you warm!

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 15:23

Ok, so you might have to add earplugs to the clothespegs, but these are reasonable adjustments, non?

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 15:24

You can't let these minor inconveniences defeat you!

BlackeyedSusan · 04/11/2013 15:37

sod the electric blanket put a goat small child in the bed to warm it up. if you have one that likes to use you as mattress and or pillow and gets all snuggly, so much the better.

I have fleecy blankets for sitting about under, and lots of layers. thermal underwear is a godsend.

hot drinks are warming. to save on heating the kettle too often, put the rrest in a flask and use that.

EldritchCleavage · 04/11/2013 16:13

It is important to stay active and moving as well though, that keeps you warmer in the long run. And to air the house. It blows a gale through ours on weekend mornings for a while because I open windows and get everything aired.

Can you still buy liberty bodices? I remember wearing one as a child, and the rubber buttons were hell to fasten on a cold winter's morning.

A medium-sized dog is a good hot water bottle, though a small cat is well- nigh useless.

EldritchCleavage · 04/11/2013 17:02

Can goats manage rubber buttons though?

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 17:17

You may have to help your goat(s), Eldrich.

we live in a cold council house and cant insulate. been ages cleanin mould off windows.

blue peter ideas: I masking taped folded-in-half kitchen paper to where the mould forms. works for a couple of days anyway. so far..

rolled up towels or something on window sils against where the cold comes in.

curtain across front door.

they sell draught excluders in poundland. theyre very good.

a throw on the sofa.

wheat microwave thingys and hot water bottles.

small fan heater in room we're in, theyre cheaper than gas.
but OP yes.
were freezing. and its only November.

bloody government and bloody energy companies. they are pure evil.

BurlyShassey · 04/11/2013 18:29

and DC and I sharing a bed. body heat.

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 19:39

I haven't been worried - winter is much longer and colder in Hungary where I grew up, but I guess that's why people are better prepared from having winter tyres to having snow shovels and grit vehicles/snow ploughs etc.

as for personal worries with heating costs I see why people are fearful and I'm sympathetic.

putting up a nice thick blanket on the back of your front door, like an inside curtain is a really good way to minimise heat going out.
lots of other good ideas already - only skimmed it, so mine may have been mentioned.

ZingWantsCake · 04/11/2013 19:40

*and there are loads of grit vehicles/snow ploughs available - is what I should have said.

people don't have them as such!
although some farmers do

DumSpiroSpero · 04/11/2013 20:35

fleece tops & the trousers are really warm.

My DH is virtually allergic to putting the heating on, but I really feel the cold. Since I got the above set the heating's been switched on 3 times...by DH!

BurlyShassey · 04/11/2013 20:48

were bloody freezing and its only November!!!! can see our breath.

bloody british gas say im over £200. in DEBIT. wtf?

I never put th bolieron, haven't put heating since feb this year, and that as only half hour each day.

Im NEVER in debit!!!! they did this before, and I was ALL morning on phone to them (good thing I made them phone me back!!!)

Huitre · 04/11/2013 21:18

In non-goat helpfulness, Uniqlo (who do online ordering for those who are not near a shop) do a thermals range called Heat Tech which is both fairly cheap and really effective. And it lasts and lasts. I have vests from that range that are five or six years old and still look new. It's stretchy and light and comfortable but really warm. And it doesn't actually look like thermals, just like normal long-sleeved T-shirts etc.

They've recently started doing trousers and leggings which I definitely plan to try and they also do a nice kids range.

Huitre · 04/11/2013 22:07

Also, I meant to say, sign up for their email because they often send special offers or free delivery codes through.

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 22:11

Huitre - are you suggesting that the goat posts have been less than helpful? I am shocked! (The phrase "pearls before oysters" comes to mind.)

Huitre · 04/11/2013 22:14

Certainly not! Just placing my advice in the correct category for any goat-refusers out there...

Huitre · 04/11/2013 22:14

I am sure there will be very few goat-refusers.

Bettercallsaul1 · 04/11/2013 22:20

If any. But you will understand now why, on that other thread, I am so keen for people to take their shoes off before coming into my house - I must keep things clean for my goats.
