To not understand why people use an ipad as a camera when out and about

Surely it's big, and very expensive, and doesnt even take great photos??

OP posts:
MadAsFish · 03/11/2013 20:34

And then I consider the source.

EmmelineGoulden · 03/11/2013 20:53

MadAs It was the sarcasm I was trouncing you with in the spy-camera post. Not hyperbole. Though I thought the "shot" bit was a nice touch.

People can block a view in many ways. I have had my view blocked by people using their phones as cameras as well as people using regular cameras. I find pro amd semi-pro cameras tend to be the worst, mainly because the photgraphers are trying to take a much better picture than the snap happy brigade. I've also had my view blocked by bags and hats. By files. By all sorts of things. But then I've had many people take photos (with all sorts of cameras), wear hats, hold bags, files and any manner of things without blocking my view at all. The point being that simply using an iPad is not synonymous with thoughtless behaviour - which can exist regardless of the instrument someone uses to take a photo. Hence your ascribing of selfishness to another poster on the basis that she used her camera regardless of what other people used was both inappropriate and ignorant.

MadAsFish · 03/11/2013 21:09

No, because there's no difference at all between most cameras and ipad. Except for them being much, much larger. And held up specifically the block the view of whatever we're all watching.
It was appropriate, and it wasn't ignorant. Yes, I saw it was sarcasm, it wasn't worth noting.

LiegeAndLief · 03/11/2013 22:12

I have an iPad but no smartphone. Who are the other 4 people?

Incidentally I also have a camera, and have never taken photos on the iPad when out.

KatoPotato · 03/11/2013 22:26

I was at a soft play in ummmm... an area ranked high on the Scottish index of Mass Deprivation.

The number of grannies with iPads, taking pictures (selfies!) and browsing Facebook was unbelievable. I wondered if this image was what the beautiful people of Apple would like as a representation of their products.

Tigerbomb · 03/11/2013 22:59

I go to a lot of gigs and I have noticed a distinct increase in the amount of people who do this

Drives me nuts - you end up watching the gig through someone else's screen.

Weeantwee · 03/11/2013 23:21

My DH's gran used her iPad as a camera on our wedding day. Luckily I always prepare for the worst and had requested no photography during the ceremony, but no sooner were we out the room then it was whipped out of her handbag and in my face. She was told to put it away by several people. She did get it out later to film our first dance. Apparently she was swaying to the music and turning the iPad like she was playing Mario Karts Grin

McAvity · 03/11/2013 23:29

Based on a sample of one 'young person' I know, people take photos on an iPad so that they can:

  • make a distorted version of your face,
  • morph your face into the faces of all the other people they've taken photos of,
  • make a 'music video' in which all the performers and dancers have your superimposed face,
  • same but the music video now features various anthropomorphic fruit and vegetables playing instruments and dancing around. All have your face.
Chucklecheeks · 03/11/2013 23:37

I saw this for the first time today. I was at soft play centre with DH and the kids and there was a woman taking pictures and videos. I was watching peoples reactions to her as i couldn't decide what my opinion was. All you could hear was people making negative comments. She wasn't harming anyone though.
She was a expensively dressed lady and very attractive. It seemed to be women commenting that she was showing off. She just looked like she was enjoying taking picture of her kids to me. People can be judgemental about anything.

kimberlina · 03/11/2013 23:55

3 more to find liege. I have an iPad but no smartphone. But use a camera if I want a photo.

MsJupiterJones · 03/11/2013 23:57

My mum (62) uses her iPad, it does take terrible photographs. She loves it though and bought it having no idea they were desirable or fashionable, just thought it would be useful as she travels a lot.

Her phone is a centuries-old Nokia as she can't cope with new-fangled things like predictive text.

EmmelineGoulden · 04/11/2013 00:08

MadAs it was demonstrably ignorant as the poster stated she had never done what you suggested. You lacked knowledge, hence you were ignorant.

My iPad isn't that much larger than my head. It's smaller than my husband's head. It quite possible to use it in a way that does not cause more inconvenience to others than using a phone would. Which doesn't mean that using an iPad makes you considerate. It's qute possible to get in people's way when taking photos, whatever camera you use.

FannyMcNally · 04/11/2013 00:13

I'm here! Just checking in! Only have an iPad that I got as a gift. No digital camera and certainly can't afford a smart phone! Love taking photos and don't care if I look a twat!

FannyMcNally · 04/11/2013 00:16

Also some of us remember when video cameras were the size of a small suitcase. Get behind one of them at a school assembly THEN you'd have something to complain about. An iPad is miniscule in comparison Grin

MiniMonty · 04/11/2013 02:38

Strange isn't it - in the old days cameras were tiny but you had to think twice about taking a picture because it would cost - now they're on you're iPad, free, but the size of a cereal box.

Progress ?

feelingood · 04/11/2013 02:50

I have it with me..so i use it..and I look lile a twat. So what if I can afford to have a device and I use it in the company of others - is that showing off?

I shall just keep twating away then. Lovely really.

TSSDNCOP · 04/11/2013 04:31

It takes a shit photo and its like holding up an etch a sketch to take a photo of whatever you're viewing. Furthermore no one behind can see apart from what's on your glowing screen.

So the next mother holding one up in the front row of class assembly/the nativity will be picking bits of motherboard out of her fanjo way up to twelfth night.

claraschu · 04/11/2013 04:52

I have an ipad, but no phone-

We occasionally use it to take pictures because we forgot the camera. It never occurred to me that this would annoy someone.

On a tour, while moving around how do you block people's view of Anfield with an ipad? Anfield is BIG.

Actually MadAs I didn't say everyone else could go hang, those were your words. I said I couldn't care less what device other people use to take photographs. Meaning, I am not in agreement with the OP.

Earthymama · 04/11/2013 06:51

"I've been a twat in San Francisco". . . Yes, it does fit the tune!
I haven't used my phone but used my iPad for pics I want to post on FB.
Luckily I am not selfish so have not obstructed anyone's view of anything.

DP has been less of a twat as she has iPad mini.

Sparklingbrook · 04/11/2013 07:06

clara the pitch is BIG but the behind the scenes tour consists of changing rooms etc and many areas which are very SMALL.

trockodile · 04/11/2013 07:20

I have an ipad, which is always with me (in pre-technology days I had a book and a spare book, now I have kindle app and iBooks!) I don't have a smart phone (so add me to the list) and our camera is huge, bulky and ancient. So I take photos on my ipad which range from fantastic to awful depending on available light. But I have a photo if I want one. To the best of my knowledge I have never inconvenienced anyway-I had no idea so many people thought about these things, I have never noticed or cared what other people use to take photos!

Sparklingbrook · 04/11/2013 07:22

You would notice if an Ipad was blocking your view though trock.

Misspixietrix · 04/11/2013 07:27

I've got an old HTC phone and everyone has remarked how good the photos are on it so I can't understand the whole IPad camera thing neither. Iphone yes. Ipads remind Me of DMs friend who once took his GDCs out to a national park and saw a woman promptly sit herself down with a laptop and let her kids get on with it. Waste of an entrance fee if you ask me.
