To not understand why people use an ipad as a camera when out and about

Surely it's big, and very expensive, and doesnt even take great photos??

OP posts:
MrsBennetsEldest · 03/11/2013 15:46

Madasafish, I've never used either away from my own home so have never inconvenienced anyone or blocked anyone's view, think before you respond.

TwitTwooShoe · 03/11/2013 15:59

I do this. It's an IPad mini, if it helps. Blush I was given it as a gift and can't afford a camera or a smartphone, so I use it. I'm not twattish about it and never crowd stuff, but it's easy and because my mobile is very small and crap, using my phone isn't really an option for pictures.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 03/11/2013 16:01

I'm surprised people think the iPad takes crappy pictures, I think the quality is pretty amazing. I do have a decent camera though, so I'd rather use that than schlepping a tablet around with me.

Anyway, YANBU OP because iPads bloody block everyone's view! If you can use it without annoying everyone else, then fine but I don't want to see something on your iPad, I want to see it with my own eyes.

sydlexic · 03/11/2013 16:02

I use mine when out with DS because I can see the the image, on something as small as my iPhone I cannot.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/11/2013 16:03

It has a camera on it, therefore it can legitimately be used as a camera. I don't use mine as a camera as I have an iPhone which does the job. However, if I only had the iPad on me and wanted to take a photo then I would, and wouldn't think twice about it.

Know what a megapixel is?

iPad 4 (and new iPad Air) back camera is 5MP camera, which is more than adequate for any picture you want to stick on Facebook or print out for a photo album. Probably wouldn't look great if you tried to blow it up to frame on the wall, but more than adequate for most uses.

flowery · 03/11/2013 16:28

Maybe most people don't have an iPad4? Mines an iPad 3 and the camera is rubbish compared to my phone.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2013 16:31

You'll still look like a twat whilst taking the photo though.

frogspoon · 03/11/2013 16:34

You'll still look like a twat whilst taking the photo though.

Which is why I don't actually use my iPad to take photos very often.

frogspoon · 03/11/2013 16:35

iPad 3 has the same back camera (5MP) as iPad 4 and Air, at least according to wikipedia (which is the source of all knowledge)

SoupDragon · 03/11/2013 16:36

Photo quality is not all about the megapixles anyway.

I don't think I've ever really used my iPad to take a photo. Perhaps once out of curiosity and once by accident.

EmmelineGoulden · 03/11/2013 17:03

MadAs You're quite right. Anyone who isn't using a spy camera to take their photos deserves to be shot. They clearly have no idea how to behave in public.

carlajean · 03/11/2013 17:16

That's so true OP. I'm noticing more and more, especially the people who don't even look at stuff, just take a picture and move on.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/11/2013 17:23

I noticed lots of tourists using ipads to take photos when we were in a cathedral in France in the summer.

DP and I commented on how odd it was. They just looked so bulky and awkward to use. The people using them all seemed to be women of a certain age.

Also, from what I've seen they don't take brilliant quality pictures (I haven't got one but my boss uses one a lot , including for taking photos for work purposes - indoor photos have always looked grainy and poor)

Pixel · 03/11/2013 18:13

I've never seen anyone taking photos with an ipad, but I could just be unobservant Grin.

I have seen one person using one as a video camera. She sets it up on a tripod when she has a dressage lesson so she can look afterwards and see what she was doing right or wrong, or how the horse was going so she knows for next time. It takes in the whole arena so I suppose it is actually better than a camcorder.

Oh no, I tell a lie, I have seen someone taking photos, but that was at a SN school. There is a program on the ipad used for non-verbal dcs to communicate and the teacher was taking pics of everyday objects for them to use. She obviously wasn't getting in other people's way and being anti-social though so that's allowed Wink.

icetip · 03/11/2013 19:01

Just taken some great shots at the Grand Canyon on one of the days I was walking there. It was in my backpack. It's got a camera on it. The results are fine. And I don't give a shit wrapped up in a fuck what a few of you here think.

zookeeper · 03/11/2013 19:16

I have an ipad but no digital camera and my phone doesn't take pics. I had no idea I might be offending so many of you....Hmm

MrsCakesPremonition · 03/11/2013 19:23

The last couple of school plays I've been to have featured rows of parents in the front row holding up their iPads and blocking the view of the parents behind. The worst offenders are the ones who use the iPad to video the whole performance, not only is there no break from their view blocking but I can't understand why you would want to experience your child's first assembly second hand through a screen instead of actually watching your child (and letting them see your face).

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2013 19:26

I think if you are holding up a massive Ipad and there are people behind you it should cross your mind that you are blocking their view.

Show some consideration.

MrsCakesPremonition · 03/11/2013 19:30

Especially when you are holding the iPad cover open too - effectively doubling its size.

Shonajoy · 03/11/2013 19:43

Ie used mine a few times- once to document accident damage as someone rear ended me, and my phone was out of battery. It's was great fun, showing off AND looking like a twat!

MadAsFish · 03/11/2013 19:46

That's nice, you must be one of the very few ipad owners who haven't, in my experience, which is why you can be very sure I did think before responding. But thanks for your unnecessary condescension anyway.

Really, find me where I said anything even remotely like that. But hyperbole is so argument-winning, isn't it?

MadAsFish · 03/11/2013 19:47

What MrsCakes describes is very much what I've seen happen.

MrsBennetsEldest · 03/11/2013 19:50

MadAs, you are more than welcome. :)
