AIBU?

to wake a sleeping baby to change their nappy?

Friend thinks I am. I always change ds soild nappy even if it is at a late hour and he is asleep. I would definitely not like to be lying in my own waste all night if it could be helped and dont expect my son to either.

Said friend said she just leaves it til the morning to change her dd. I have looked after her dd many times and this would explain her awful nappy rashes I guess. I know obviously sometimes it happens when mum and dad are asleep and of course dont know their child needs changed so thats not included here.

Whats the verdict? What do/did you do in this situation?

Agree with the majority, I'm a lazy fecker but definitely change poo nappy. I use dd night light torch for a bit of light so I can see what I'm doing

Always changed mine as soon as I noticed, it quite lazy parenting to leave a soiled nappy when you can change it.

I would definitely change it if there's a poo. Thankfully dd very rarely poos overnight though, which is lucky as there is no way she would sleep through a nappy change - I'm a bit Envy of those of you whose dc's would.

Oh no, never leave a poo.

DS and DD so rarely poo at night, I've hardly ever changed them. But I do if they poo. Not for wee though, let them sleep IMO.

When ds was small i would do the dreamfeed and change his nappy without fully waking him up. quite tricky as minimal light and did it fast . usually i would do the poppers up of vest and leave baby grow open to make it quick and less likely he would wake. i kept him in his Moses too.

Always, always change a poo as soon as you can! I'd never leave a baby to sleep in a pooey nappy.

This is a new one to me ... DD never pooed at night, only at about 18 months when she was ill. I guess it depends how long it would be til the baby woke up anyway for a feed. I never changed DD overnight, even when she woke for a feed. Nappies were fine for 12 hours and she never had nappy rash.

If it didn't wake them up and it was after your last check on them why would you be in their room to smell it?

As a nanny and maternity nurse- I'd change a poo at night, maybe not as a really tiny (liquid-poo!) baby. It's possible to do it without waking most children- low lighting, soft singing or humming, get everything ready before moving baby, do it quick, back to bed.

GoldiChops · 02/11/2013 21:59

Oh but maybe not at naptime- unless they do it right at the start of a 2 hour nap or something.

Poo yes, wee definitely not-that would be just plain daft.

2tired we are talking about changing a nappy that you know is soiled, rather than deliberately leaving the child in it all night. Not when you dont know the child is soild :)

What everyone said. Always change a poo!

If, for some reason, someone really felt they couldn't possibly disturb the baby if it pooed while asleep (I would never recommend it but, you know, we've all had our parental desperate moments in our time, haven't we), I'd suggest that a pre-emptive application of a really good barrier cream at bedtime might help alleviate any resulting nappy rash. But changing the nappy is always the better option if you possibly can.

Would wake baby for a poo always. Not for a wee even if nappy v full. If I left all night would have nappy rash that would take a week to shift. Confused

As others have said, always change a poo nappy - aside from being unpleasant, it's really bad for their skin.

That being said, my DD is 7 months and I'm still rubbish at changing nappies, I havent had to change her in the night for a while but I did used to hate it because it meant spending however long trying to settle her down again.

I always changed ds's.

Keep the room dark, don't talk at all! Not even to soothe and they leant very quickly to stay asleep.

Ds did and didn't wake after only a week or so of doing this Smile

I'd always change a poo. Luckily ds hasn't pooed at night for ages. He's a light sleeper and would always wake then take ages to get back down.

DD1 used to bleed if she got left in a nappy with poo for more than 10 minutes or so, so YANBU to change it.

I had a health issue that lead to leakage (sorry, tmi but it is relevant!) and it was horrible. It was itchy, I bled, it was just awful and that was from a tiny bit of leakage, nothing like a full poo that a baby would do. It is downright cruel especially if the poor child has nappy rash.

2tired

SIDS Guidance says you should sleep in the same room until your baby is 6months old.

Always change, not just for their wee bum but my nose. He stinks out my bedroom when he has a poo.

I always changed dd, poop or wee, before I went to bed. My dd woke up twice each night until she was one and then once a night until she was 20 months. Changing her nappy meant that she would sleep longer in between wake ups, I guess because she was more comfortable.
