Animals vs humans round 2

I was enjoying our previous debate started by Fifi. Not sure if we were done!

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

'I have a dog, I consider her a member of the family. Not in the same way I would consider y'know...a person to be.

What bizarre views you have.'

They're not my views, thank you.

pianodoodle · 03/11/2013 20:22

everlong your words will be twisted in whatever way suits I'm afraid.

If I was trying to justify leaving a child to die instead of a cat I'd need to do a lot of barrel scraping so twisting words would be a useful tool Grin

hickerybobp · 03/11/2013 20:24

I'd choose my pet over anybody else, then in order... spouse, child, somebody else's child, somebody else.... I know that isn't a popular view but I'm not about to change it just because it upsets some people.

Apologies Outraged

It was Urgent that was supposed to be directed to.

hickory fret not it's a popular enough view here.

You'll find plenty of company, disturbingly enough for a site called Mumsnet Confused

hickerybobp · 03/11/2013 20:31

everlong, yes and DH is very aware of where he stands with regards to the pets, he doesn't like the pets but he doesn't have to and I don't expect him to so long as he isn't in any way mean to them, I accept he isn't an animal person. However he knows if he ever made me choose it would be a very short goodbye Grin

Imsosorryalan · 03/11/2013 20:32

Ha, some people are being deliberately inflammatory I feel.. Stoking the fire ( no pun intended)

Has anyone pointed out yet that the human team may also have dogs as pets? To tar all of us as dog haters is ridiculous.

I love my dog, she is part of my family but her life is not worth more than a humans, esp not a child.

everlong I didn't twist your words at all, I simply stated that if someone used your logic from that particular post to explain why dogs couldn't be family members, then the same thing would apply to adopted children, as they to weren't born into the family.

hickerybobp · 03/11/2013 20:36

everlong, it's not a dog and yes that is what I'm saying.

2tiredtoScare · 03/11/2013 20:37

I dont think Hickory has DC, I certainly hope she doesnt.

OutragedFromLeeds · 03/11/2013 20:37

'Has anyone pointed out yet that the human team may also have dogs as pets?'

I don't think it's been specifically pointed out, but I don't think it really needs to be.

The dog savers have human relations.

UrgentNews · 03/11/2013 20:37

pianodoodle no one else has said that they woud save their dog over their DC

The original question however was not put to family vs pets, it was about a stranger. A human life. To me it seems seems the same as asking would you save your best friend over a stranger, the answer to that seems obvious, you would choose your friend. So certainly the animal would win as you would have a friendship and bond with the creature.

2tiredtoScare · 03/11/2013 20:43

I really dont believe she is a mother

2tiredtoScare · 03/11/2013 20:44

You offered the pecking order hickory, no one forced it out of you

pianodoodle · 03/11/2013 20:45

pianodoodle no one else has said that they would save their dog over their DC

No I understand that. They would choose it over mine, or someone else's child.

Having said that, I think someone actually just has come on and declared they would choose their pet over their own child.

hickerybobp · 03/11/2013 20:46

2tired, I know, I didn't say anybody did.... Confused

UrgentNews · 03/11/2013 20:47

To be honest, even I'm rather shocked as to why you would put your dog before your DCs Hickery

2tiredtoScare · 03/11/2013 20:47

Yes but you are referring back to the original scenario without offering to qualify a statement that you made thus changing the issue. Im pretty sure you don't have a child

FestiveEdition · 03/11/2013 20:48

Can I ask if those who would save their animal over a child, would therefore have no issue with being told that a member of their family could have been saved in a fire but the rescuer opted to save her pet instead?

pianodoodle · 03/11/2013 20:49

urgent yes I see which post of mine you were referring to now!

No indeed, although I'd still line Hickory up in the same company as those saying they'd leave my child to die over their pet. It's all pretty horrible.
