To think people are ruining Guy Fawkes?

Fireworks going off already here and it's a constant bang bang bang. I can hear next-door's dogs going crazy and goodness knows where my cat is.
Now I like fireworks as much as the next person but at this rate by the 5th (and beyond probably) I'll be sick of them.

AIBU to think that Guy Fawkes was more fun when it was one night that we all looked forward to then finished for another year?

YANBU. Love fireworks but it gets old quickly

PatoBanton · 01/11/2013 19:32

It should be only one night - or else organised displays only.

Selling fireworks to the general public was always a bad idea imo.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 01/11/2013 19:37

Organized displays only imo

ForalltheSaints · 01/11/2013 19:38

I agree organised displays and maybe November 5th and nearest Saturday.

Pixel · 01/11/2013 19:41

Well I don't even mind people having them at home if they are sensible (fond memories of failing catherine wheels), but there should definitely be restrictions on what you can buy. The really loud ones shouldn't even be for sale, and no fireworks should be for sale weeks beforehand like they are now.

Next door moved their bonfire party to tonight due to the forecast for the weekend

Luckily they pre warned me so I could get the cats in

gordyslovesheep · 01/11/2013 19:44

I agree Pixel - I LOVE fireworks and also have fond memories of them as a kid BUT the ones you can buy now are mad

most require a garden of 25ft + - we live on an estate where NO ONE has a 25ft garden - my windows are rattling with the booms

It's dangerous and a nuisance

DoItTooJulia · 01/11/2013 19:47

It is Diwali too.

Isildur · 01/11/2013 19:48

I love fireworks. You can buy them all year round, but they are so expensive that not many people do.

I'd happily have the neighbours spend their money for my amusement all year round.

Pixel · 01/11/2013 19:49

When I was little we lived in a flat. People used to dump all their old furniture etc up on the racehill for weeks beforehand and there would be a big bonfire. We would go up there with our biscuit tin of fireworks, find a space and set them off, just like all the other families. We thought it was brilliant and it did mean all the fireworks were let off well away from the built-up area.
As far as I know they stopped it because idiots thought it was funny to set fire to the bonfire before the proper day and it was ruined for everybody.

Why are they so bastard loud?
Serious question.
Surely the best bit of a firework is the visual ooh-ness not the noise.

I help run a small music festival and am very conscious of permitted decibel levels - some of these fireworks massively exceed the limits.

Pixel · 01/11/2013 19:51

Diwali is sunday isn't it? So still too early, and too loud!

Where we live you have 2 legal days (nights) where you can freely use fireworks personally. You can buy them up to a week before in supermarkets and DIY shops.

After that if you want a fireworks display for personal reasons you have to apply for a licence and pay for a member of the police force to come out! Shock

mrsjay · 01/11/2013 19:54

what pato said dd did her firework training with her work (supermarket) 2 weeks ago there is no need for it they have been going off here already I am dreading tomorrow till tuesday there should be no fireworks until the night its self, and yeah they are so loud my poor dog has an upset stomach with them he got such a fright ,

Pixel · 01/11/2013 19:54

Sounds brilliant Wally, where is that?

OP posts:
TheGonnagle · 01/11/2013 19:56

It's Diwali at the moment, so that is probably why. That said, we will have fireworks tomorrow night for Guy Fawkes, as I don't finish work till 8 on Tuesday. If the weather carries on like this we'll have them next Saturday instead I think.

ModernToss · 01/11/2013 19:57

Switzerland?

DoItTooJulia · 01/11/2013 19:57

I think we have Diwali fireworks this early here.

It can go on and on, whether it's Eid, Diwali, bonfire night, whatever!

I hate it when they are late, like midnight. The rest of the time, meh.

ModernToss · 01/11/2013 19:58

Sorry, 'Switzerland' was to Wally.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 01/11/2013 20:00

Yes, Modern. Grin

TwitTwooShoe · 01/11/2013 20:38

Diwali is on the 3rd though Confused DH's family celebrates Diwali, but I don't see why. Fireworks frm the 3rd-7th, for the festival, fine. Fireworks for Halloween, I can just about get. Fireworks for Guy Fawkes, yeah. But I hate the bangs for no reason.

farrowandbawl · 01/11/2013 20:47

Next door has been setting them off as well.

To make it worse, he's hired a little shop to take advantage of the season so we're going to have to put up with this for weeks as he's "testing his stock". Wanker.

Organised displays only, sold by licence. This is well overdue.

ninnymcphee · 01/11/2013 20:50

Absolutely agree that fireworks should only be sold by license for public displays. Garden fireworks are just a PITA to neighbours and dangerous in the wrong hands.

TamzinGrey · 01/11/2013 21:21

I agree OP. Turning Guy Fawkes Night into a moveable occasion has completely spoilt the magic.

When I was a child, November 5th was a Very Special Date Indeed, and something we all looked forward to for weeks on end. Everybody had their fireworks on that one and only night, so you could watch your neighbours' rockets exploding overhead as you let your own off. If you were lucky enough to live on a hill above a town (as I was) you could look down and see loads of bonfires.

It was particularly brilliant if November 5th happened to fall in the middle of the week, as there was an unwritten rule that you could stay up really late even though there was school the next day. Nobody would ever have dreamed for a single moment of putting the celebrations off until the weekend.

After it was all over we would immediately stop obsessing about fireworks and turn our attention to Christmas.

The buggers have ruined it and it's a rotten shame.

Pixel · 01/11/2013 22:40

Tamzin, I remember having Guy Fawkes on school nights too and the excitement of setting off in the dark, all wrapped up in scarves and gloves. Mind you, we thought we were staying up really late but it probably wasn't very late at all, it was just the thrill of going out instead of going to bed.
