Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

Empathy is not the same thing as having a strong bond. This isn't necessarily to do with human rights, it's to do with the 'relationship' the person has with their pet.

If there was a fire as Strumperton said and there was your child and another persons child, who would you save?

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:06

Strumperton I care more about my dog than my brother.

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 00:08

"I think people questioning our feelings just don't feel the same way about their dogs as we do."

How untrue and unfair. I can assure you.

But my feelings about my cat/dog would be selfish reasons to save an animal over a human life. Choosing to help one's own children ahead of other people is not the same thing at all.

Aw princess your dog is much loved then! Can I ask what breed he/she is btw?

OutragedFromLeeds · 02/11/2013 00:09

'Choosing to help one's own children ahead of other people is not the same thing at all.'

Why?

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:10

I don't think it is and I'm sorry if I've offended you, but you cannot possibly love them the same way we love ours if you would save a stranger over them.

It's like saying you'd chose a stranger's family member instead of your own

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 00:10

I'm more disturbed that you have to ask me that Confused

OutragedFromLeeds · 02/11/2013 00:12

Humour me and tell me why?

Why is prioritising your family over a stranger different? Why is that not selfish?

Ivyfairy · 02/11/2013 00:13

They are not human, dogs. Sorry. So it's not comparable in my opinion.

Speaking of who loves their pets more is descending into childish territory. I'm not going to engage in that.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:13

Yes, she is Strumperton very loved! She is a 4yr old Shih Tzu Smile she is a HUGE part of our lives.

OutragedFromLeeds · 02/11/2013 00:14

Ok, but just answer my question.

Why is prioritising your family over a stranger different? Why is that not selfish?

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:18

princess What a lucky little lady she is to have a lovely owner like you. They do truly make a home/family complete don't they?

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:20

sorry not owner, friend/mum? whichever you prefer!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:21

Oh thank you, that's very kind. What breed do you have?

She brings me genuine joy, is a real part of the family and my life. I would be completely lost without her.

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:23

I have a boxer dog, name is Harley. My dad has his mum and dad, Star and Sherlock. I was there when he was born and we've been best of friends ever since!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:25

Aww! What a handsome boy! Boxers have such a lovely nature.

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:27

Oh they do! He's so playful, but doesn't realise how big he is so I have to reign him in, and he tries to fit in places he shouldnt! Last week he managed to wrap himself up in the curtains, he actually made a sort of hammock.

He got attacked by a shar pei a few days ago, had to go to the vets bless him.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:30

Haha! Our Shih Tzu does that all the time! She's always getting caught up in the duvet/curtains/blanket she's a bit ditzy

Oh no Sad Shar Pei's can be quite vicious, is he ok?

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 00:33

It's so cute though, he once jumped onto the kitchen side top and got stuck. He's never done it since I told him off for that He had an infection coming on but is fine now. The vet didn't bother with the head cone thing, he'd have chewed it straight off!

Well we seem to have killed this off Blush

please don't mind us people! Grin

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 00:50

Yes, it is cute. When she comes out she looks so confused but relieved at the same time! Well, at least he is ok. I always panic about other dogs attacking...

Yes, it appears we have killed this.

Lets just all agree to disagree Grin

OutragedFromLeeds · 02/11/2013 01:08

I'm still waiting for Maid and/or Ivy to explain why saving your own family member over someone else's is anything other than selfish.

ADishBestEatenCold · 02/11/2013 02:14

I think they might have been swept aside by Strumpetron and PrincessFlirtyPants who for a while there were sounding like they were going to need a room. Grin

S'gone quiet in here now! Think fire-brigade must have been. I only came back to see if Rhonda had by any chance finished with the plumber, but now I'm off to check on the dog. Night night, Outraged!

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 02:19
Blush
OutragedFromLeeds · 02/11/2013 02:33

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 03:00
