Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

Great point!!!

That was to sharp lily

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 19:47

For 15 seconds there I thought I'd made a great point Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/11/2013 19:48

:o

Man you type quick

Rinoachicken · 01/11/2013 19:48

outraged actually quite a few have said they'd save an animal/dog over a stranger any day, not necessarily just their pet.

livingzuid · 01/11/2013 19:50

Hmmmmm

A dog is more important than a human because they are part of a family.

A dog is more important than a human because they don't cause war, global warming or destroy the planet and are therefore more worthy of saving.

A dog is more important than a human because they are much more adorable and we all need to go Awwwww sometimes.

A dog is more important than a human because they provide unconditional love and support after a shit day when your friends and family and colleagues have all pissed you off ;)

Just a few for the pot :) might have overrun on words a bit.

Bubbles1066 · 01/11/2013 19:51

Your average animal is capable of extreme cruelty, far more than the vast majority of humans. Of course, it's nature not intentional, but no matter how lovely you think your pet is they will think nothing of killing their own offspring, bullying a pack member to death and many others. Very few humans would do this so actually the whole animals are nicer than humans doesn't really hold up.

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 19:52

who and where?

Saying that you would save an animal first isn't actually saying that animals are more important is it? Not like saying anyone who would save an animal over a human has got psychological problems, is a nob etc. etc.

So a human is not part of a family????

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/11/2013 19:53

I'd still take my chances with an animal over people. But I've met a lot of wankers

livingzuid · 01/11/2013 19:54

Bubbles I am sorry but don't you see what is on the news? We are fortunate to not live with famine war or fear as a daily ritual. Humans are pretty vile last time I checked the BBC.

Binkybix · 01/11/2013 19:54

I was the poster who'd said they'd be apoplectic to see someone walking out with the dog. Disbelief mixed with apoplexy I think! - this assumes a scenario where I know I'm done for.

I think I just would not be able to believe that someone had allowed someone's -anyone's- child, wife and mother to die to save a dog who at absolute best would have, say, 15 years left in them.

For me I just couldn't justify it because I know that, as upset as I was when my cat died it was not one millionth as painful as when my mum died. I don't think I could inflict that sort of grief on someone else to save my pet.

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 19:55

'they will think nothing of killing their own offspring, bullying a pack member to death'

There's a fair few humans who do this! They do it for survival, not for a laugh.

Spikeytree · 01/11/2013 19:55

I just don't have the same depth of feeling for humans I don't know as I have for animals I don't know. I can't watch 'animal in peril' films (Bambi did for me as a four-year-old) but I can cope with humans being in peril in films. I don't hate all humans, and I love my family and friends, but I class my animals as up there with my family and friends in terms of love, and way above random humans. I'd be happy to be left to die and an animal rescued in my place. I don't expect others to feel the same or agree with me, but I would hope that they could see that these are my feelings and they don't deserve to be invalidated. You rescue the humans and I'll take care of the animals and between us we can save all the hypothetical creatures, hey?

livingzuid · 01/11/2013 19:56

Rino I don't understand your comment. As part of my 20 words I am saying my dog is part of my family as are many other posters. And that is why I would save it.

Rinoachicken · 01/11/2013 19:57

Didn't mean to post that twice.

outraged I will go back trough the thread and find the quotes if you wish but you'll have to bear with me as I'm not very quick on my phone

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 19:58

It's because you said 'dog is more important than a human because they are part of a family' rather than my dog is more important because it's a member of my family.

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 19:58

rino, living is saying a dog is part of "her family" not the stranger. The stranger likely has a family too. Just not her family

livingzuid · 01/11/2013 19:59

Sure you can say a human is worth saving more than a dog because he's part of a family. But what I am trying to say is a dog is more valuable than a human to me because he is part of my family. As I have said before I am not interested in strangers whether they are part of a family or not. They are not ever going to be as important to me as my dog.

Rinoachicken · 01/11/2013 20:00

living, what outraged said.

I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong either, am just genuinely interested in peoples reasoning behind their stance.

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 20:00

Rino I'd appreciate any quotes where someone has said all animals should be saved before all humans. If they went on to say anyone who disagrees shouldn't work with children, has psychological problems, is a nob etc. so much the better.

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 20:00

Humans kill their own offspring, bully people etc and I think there is a reason we have laws in place to stop those things happening. Because we regularly do them.

Humans are no better or worse than animals. Animals aren't super lovely and noble..they are nice to their owners because it makes their life better or they love them. Same as humans really.

livingzuid · 01/11/2013 20:01

Ah my bad. Hope I re - explained. Very interesting discussion :)

Rinoachicken · 01/11/2013 20:01

Thanks for clarifying living Smile
