To ask anyone who has had experience with the mirena coil good or bad to comment?

Due to have an op tomorrow where they are going to also put the mirena coil in. I have done some research and it seems there are a lot of negative stories. I know people are more likely to talk about a bad experience but after reading a thread BASTARD mirena its started me worrying.

Due to have it because of heavy/irregular periods.

Thanks

Am on my second one. First one was replaced after 5 years, and I'm 2 years into the second one. I love it! Apart from a bit of spotting straight afterwards, no bleeding now for 7 years! No hormonal problems either, I had really bad period pains before this, and had trouble adjusting to other hormonal contraception (migraines, loss of libido etc) but as the amount of hormone on the mirena is quite small, and it's where it needs to be, I've had no trouble.

Spikeinhiscoat · 29/10/2013 14:41

Mine has been in for over a year now. Uncomfortable insertion, but ok with paracetamol. No bleeding at all for first eight months (bf'ing for 3 of those), now only a tiny, tiny bit every four weeks or so. One downside is the lack of proper periods meaning sometimes there is an insistent voice asking "what if you are pregnant?"

PumpkinsPieEyed · 29/10/2013 16:07

Are they inserting it vaginally/usual way?
Sorry if that's a stupid question.
I it's the normal way then I took high dose of ibrufen/paracetamol an hour before appointment , it was a little uncomfortable but not terrible and only had very light cramping for an hour or two after and then it was like it never happened..

Everyone is different and horror stories are generally more interesting story to tell so you will hear more of them.

The months that follow can have different symptoms like mild to crippling ovulation pain to nothing, periods never coming routinely/never leading to constant poas through my paranoia.

Hope it goes well for you

Tabby1963 · 29/10/2013 16:32

Had my second on put in last year (yes it is uncomfortable for a moment). That should do me until menopause catches up with me :). I have never had a problem with Mirena coils, no periods or pain at all (I used to have first stage of labour pains and vomiting every month). Very happy.

Halfacent · 29/10/2013 16:37

I had it put in under a GA as they were removing a fibroid at the same time. It's great. Have saved a small fortune on sanitary stuff as I don't have periods anymore. I was a little wary but it's been fab.

mirenacoilworrier · 29/10/2013 16:39

Thanks :) I am still undecided.

Having it put in while under general for other bits.

I had one after DC2, and then again after DC3. So, yes, I fell pregnant with it in situ.

But I loved having no periods (none at all!) and the chances of falling pregnant are extremely small.

lessonsintightropes · 29/10/2013 16:41

I had mine in for 7 years (should have been five but didn't get around to changing it, oops Blush). Carried on having periods but they went from being extremely heavy and horrendous to four days and only needing Super tampons. No noticeable weight gain which was related to it (more related to my insatiable desire for cheese). I have had it removed 8 weeks ago as we are now TTC and my periods have gone back to being worse than horrendous (needed to take two days off work this month - one of which my boss sent me home on). Wish I could have the effects whilst still TTC to be honest!

mirenacoilworrier · 29/10/2013 16:42

DH has had the snip so I will not have to worry about becoming pg. Just on other sites heard a lot more about weight gain and have been managing to slowly lose weight, and do not want to gain.

I had my second one put in last year

Pros:

No bastard periods - no bleeding, no pain - for 10 years . Yay!! This is why I chose Mirena.
Reliable (not 100%, but nothing is)

Cons:

My first one took about 6 months to settle down - constant niggly pain/spotting. Nearly had it removed as it was getting me down so much. But I think maybe that was because it was put in only 3 months post-birth

Also v v painful when removed - so took Co-codamol and Mefenamic Acid when I had the second one put in. Some people find it more painful than others.

Bit of dryness - but I think I may be peri-menopausal ...

NewtRipley · 29/10/2013 16:44

X post

No weight gain. At all.

stickysausages · 29/10/2013 16:48

Love it, no periods, and they were a nightmare before. Spotted for a few days, still get tender breasts once a month when AF would be due but had this with the pill too.

Due to have mine replaced next year & won't hesitate

lalamumto3 · 29/10/2013 18:47

I love mine and am now on third.

Good luck tomorrow.

sweetkitty · 29/10/2013 19:00

I'm still undecided as to whether to get one , I'm 38, having no more DC, have painful heavy periods, I was fine on the Pill but was recommended against it due to my age and migraines. (I've had migraines since aged 6, when not on the pill, pregnant and BFing)

DP has an appointment for a consultation for a vasectomy end if December (1st appt) so will be getting one January.

I'm thinking more of the mini pill now as it's only progesterone.

SagelyNodding · 29/10/2013 19:02

I love mine most of the time! Cons for me would be my seriously depleted sex drive and spot-prone skin. Both weren't problems for me before having the Mirena, but no periods, no weight gain, and no mood swings are well worth the odd spot!

CoconutRing · 29/10/2013 19:03

My sister has one. Loves it - no periods and no problems. I tried to have one fitted. My cervix went into shock and I was rushed to A&E.

CatWithARabbit · 29/10/2013 19:04

Well, mine was great after a few months when it settled down. However, it fell out after 10 months! Did not have it replaced...

WilsonFrickett · 29/10/2013 19:08

First one took around 6 months to settle down, and I did put weight on. Having it put in I can only compare to bring kicked in the cervix. By a horse. But i still went back for a second one and generally, I love it. No side effects, no periods and I feel 100% confident in it which is a BIG thing for me (traumatic birth. Another pg would be a complete disaster for me).

WilsonFrickett · 29/10/2013 19:10

Also - I'm a likely candidate for an early menopause and according to my GP I won't even notice it with the mirena in - 'you'll sail through it' were here words. Of course, that could be bull (or it could be happening right now!)

hattymattie · 29/10/2013 19:10

I've had mine in for 7 years now - the regular 5 and then left because I'm near menopausal and there is apparently and HRT effect. It's been brilliant - next to no periods and hardly any PMT - had a lot before. I can honestly say it changed my life. I had no immediate side effects on insertion.

QueenofClean · 29/10/2013 19:18

This thread is a great need to know as I'm having one fitted tomorrow. Due to heavy periods and bad PMT. Need to have this fitted before my GP will refer me for a hysterectomy. He agrees hysterectomy the best option for me but I need to have exhausted all other options before the hospital will consider me for one.

So Brufen and paracetamol beforehand.

I had a copper coil between my 2 children, but since having the girls my periods have become really heavy each month and I'm not a nice person to be around :(

Nandocushion · 29/10/2013 20:27

On my third. Best thing I ever did. Insertion is a little uncomfortable, but not terrible.

Nandocushion · 29/10/2013 20:28

No periods anymore for me either. I wish I'd known about it in my teens.

Birdinthebush · 29/10/2013 21:11

I have had two over the last six years and they have been brilliant. Very reliable form of contraception and no periods. The only issue I had was the insertation was rather uncomfortable, much worse than a smear. But I have never been pregnant and both times the GP warned me it would be painfull for me. Although the the few seconds of discomfort is worth it.

BuntyPenfold · 29/10/2013 21:28

I love it and I'm on my second one.
Without it, I was in agony every month as well as seemingly bleeding to death, unable to even stand for 2 days, unable to work for 3-4 days, couldn't make any plans eg book a holiday or a flight anywhere.

I can't take anything Ibuprufen or similar, so just had paracetamol for the insertion, and it was okay. Not great but nothing compared to my period pain.

No weight gain or any other side effects for me.
