regarding pumpkins. My children think so.

I have bought two culinary pumpkins instead of those really huge things.

This way, the kids can do a pumpkin each, and I can make a pie and roast the seeds, because those giant pumpkins don't appear fit for anything.

However, I apparently just don't get it.

I agree. I don't. ok, they are small, but at least nothing's wasted. right?

I left it far too late last year and couldnt find a pumpkin for love nor money...

Or an orange...

Didnt think of turnip or swede..

So we had

teeny, tiny

carved

lemons!

TeWiSavesTheDay · 31/10/2013 08:41

We carved melons as students. They glowed green!

Bogeyface · 31/10/2013 13:07

Tesco have been selling a box with 6 oranges and a load of Moshi Monsters stickers for £1, which the kids loved playing with, no mess and they ate the oranges afterwards!

Pumpkins. Ha!

We carved turnips when we were kids. The toughest root vegetable known to man.

am i missing something? they look bloody huge to me, I think it was all a ruse to get us on your profile to see Terry wogan in his pants again (boak)

I have been carving my swede and I now know the secret: Global knives.

Bogeyface · 31/10/2013 15:24

I did a swede a couple of years ago, inspired by MN if I remember correctly, and I bought a swede that was reduced at the supermarket and left it by the radiator til the next day. It was really easy to carve out the flesh as it has softened, I used a metal ice scream scoop.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 31/10/2013 15:28

Clever

I read (in a completely fascinating book about the history of night time) that turnip lanterns were used by children and poor people for going outside at night, not just at Halloween. I bet they used old soft ones too.

DevilsRoulette · 31/10/2013 16:10

heehee, you've got me. I am on a mission to subject you all to my disturbing collection of woganporn. Grin

I added another pumpkin but they'd run out of the big ones so I got a 'ghost pumpkin' instead. It's a very pale yellowish colour.

More importantly I have made pumpkin pie which is cooking nicely and smelling GORGEOUS! and I had mixture left over so I've poured it in some ramekins and am hoping for the best Grin

And the pumpkin seeds are roasted and waiting to go on top.

There's a huge bowl of sweets waiting for the trick or treaters. Although it's looking increasingly likely that they won't survive much longer Blush

My pumpkin is very small, but that's because I grew it on my allotment and it was a very dry summer Halloween Wink. There was just enough for some pumpkin muffins though and the chooks will get the remains tomorrow so nothing wasted here.
My kids were totally uninterested though and I doubt anyone except maybe a couple of sharp-eyed neighbours will see my lantern as we live in a close without passing traffic. I just couldn't have a pumpkin and not carve it, it wouldn't be right!

YesterdayI · 31/10/2013 19:33

Mmm carved lemons would smell lovely unlike scorched pumpkin.

DevilsRoulette · 31/10/2013 20:14

I should have carved lemons. I've got enough of the buggers.

My tesco shop arrived last week. I'd ordered 2 lemons and 2 limes (and other stuff, or that'd just be weird Grin )but they brought me 4 lemons. I don't mean substituted. It was marked as 2 lemons and 2 limes delivered, but it was 4 lemons.

Fair enough.

so this week I ordered 4 limes. Cos I still have a couple of lemons left.

They brought me - 4 lemons! Again marked as limes. Not lemons substituted for limes.

So I phoned tesco and said that they need to show their picker the difference between a lemon and a lime.

Then I felt like a bit of a twat for doing that. Blush

A woman in Asda (yes, Asda!) today was carving Sharon fruit. They look a bit like tiny pumpkins so very cute.
