regarding pumpkins. My children think so.

I have bought two culinary pumpkins instead of those really huge things.

This way, the kids can do a pumpkin each, and I can make a pie and roast the seeds, because those giant pumpkins don't appear fit for anything.

However, I apparently just don't get it.

I agree. I don't. ok, they are small, but at least nothing's wasted. right?

Buy them a big one!

But make them do the scraping out. They want it, they make the effort for it.

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 16:53

ok. i am officially a meanie pants Grin

The tiny pumpkins are carved. They are on my profile.

I think they look fine. What do you think?

If you still say giant pumpkins I will give in. Grin

Dillydollydaydream · 30/10/2013 16:59

They don't look too small at all.

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 17:09

They aren't. They just aren't those massive massive ones. They're about the size of a melon.

greencatseyes · 30/10/2013 17:11

YANBU!
definitely can't use the big ones for soup etc - believe me I tried.
Small ones just as nice to look at. Blimey when I was a kid they didn't even sell them, and we did it with TURNIPS.

greencatseyes · 30/10/2013 17:12

Oh and they are plenty big enough on the pic, well done

VivaLeBeaver · 30/10/2013 17:13

They look fine. Like the cat one.

Frightchen · 30/10/2013 17:14

I think they look fine...

However, I have bought myself a massive pumpkin to carve, so I personally think you're being totally mean.

When I'm trying the pumpkin soup I intend on making from said massive pumpkin, and am realising that massive pumpkins aren't the yummiest of things, I might relent somewhat... Halloween Grin

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 30/10/2013 17:15

Once a year..... Really? It matters so much to you for a quid....?

Dunno about bu but stupid yes. Surely better not to buy at all at that rate.

FreshBloodandGutsLeticia · 30/10/2013 17:28

You are all being unreasonable - the only acceptable vegetable to use as a Hallowe'en lantern is a swede!! Grin

killpeppa · 30/10/2013 17:31

big meanie!Wink

Tommy · 30/10/2013 17:34

they only had small pumpkins in Asda just now....very disappointing Haloween Sad

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 17:35

Yeah, I know it is a bit stupid. It's one of those things that really doesn't matter at all Grin I know. I know I know I know. But, meh, so much that we gasbag about on here is of little or no import. I'm just adding to the list.

I think I can't be arsed to go back to tesco and then wrestle with a couple of huge pumpkins and a blunt knife, truth be told. Grin

Plus I wanted to show off me cat Grin

carving a swede? You must have muscles like popeye!

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 17:36

ditto turnips.

I am amazed. I can't chop one much less could I carve a pattern in one!

OP posts:
Oblomov · 30/10/2013 17:42

Am laughing. Saw some lovely little ones , green stripes yesterday.
But seriously, please buy them a £1 Tesco one.

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 17:50

oh ahhh arrrggghhh fiiiiine

But I'm going to get myself a HUGE bar of choc while I'm there.

Which one is nicest?

Nobody suggest ANYTHING with peanut butter in. I still haven't forgiven you bunch of bastards for pretending that peanut butter kitkats were lush.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 30/10/2013 18:21

Why can't you cook a big one?Confused I'm planning to do that tomorrow.

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 18:28

I will now. I'm going to get a giant one. The kids are chuffed Grin I'll add it to the innards from the two little ones.

I'm going to make pumpkin pie and some pumpkin muffins. Both with roasted pumpkin seeds on top.

I'm slobbering down my top now. Grin

OP posts:
DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 18:29

oh, but why didn't I in the first place?

I'd read that giant pumpkins are practically inedible.

OP posts:
JumpingJackSprat · 30/10/2013 18:31

I know it is a light hearted thread but seriously how much resources go into growing pumpkins which Let's face it are a waste of money? Good growing space that could go into actual food. I agree with you op at least it's not wasted then.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 30/10/2013 18:39

Does anyone have a mega simple pumpkin pie recipe they would like to post for a virgin pumpkin eater?? Grin

Tommy · 30/10/2013 18:44

I've always cooked the inside of big and small pumpkins! On the menu for tomorrow is pumpkin and parmesan bread, pumpkin soup and pumpkin muffins!! Halloween Smile

DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 18:46

this is the one I am going to have a crack at

and these muffins

but in both cases I am going to top with roasted pumpkin seeds.

re the seeds, apparently you soak them in salted water for a few hours before roasting them.

OP posts:
DevilsRoulette · 30/10/2013 18:47

that bread sounds delicious. What's the receipe?

OP posts:
Shenanagins · 30/10/2013 19:04

Why didn't you go the whole hog of meanie and buy a turnip like we used to carve as kids Grin
