"Oh I love a real book". "I can see how much ice got left". Oh fgs ebooks are way better one handed reading. Easy storage. Easy to buy and HUGE FONT option for when you've forgotten your glasses or are drunk

Why do people go into mini orgasm about paper ?

Grin @ Toy Story/Tolstoy mixup - I hope he was suitably embarrassed. I bet he was a Kindle owner

ScarerAndFuckItsAGhost · 27/10/2013 13:20

Pacific Grin I promise I'm not on glue though, I only sniff the paper it holds together.

Trills · 27/10/2013 13:23

There is nothing that a bunch of paper held together by glue can do that makes up for the fact that you have to carry it around.

My kindle is smaller than carrying just one book, and I get to carry around hundreds.

Howsuper · 27/10/2013 13:24

Mignonette

If you could cram all your DVDs in the cupboards so none are on show, you and I could be lifelong chums.

Laquitar · 27/10/2013 13:24

Im afraid i am one of those. I just cant get used to the idea if kindles. But im like this with everything, i couldnt get used to cds either, and then to ipods, or to iphones.
Im like granny. It takes me ages to come around and i grieve for the era thats finishing.

But i dont display the books in the living room and i dont care how many books people have and where theystore them.

KCumberSandwich · 27/10/2013 13:27

Love a "real" book. i can't seem to focus on reading with a kindl- brother and sister love thiers.

i'm not knobby about it though- if i did alot of travelling/commuting inwould probably get one rather than humphing half a library around with me.

as it stands i have always had overflowing and untody bookshelves that for some reason i do like the look of.

gordyslovesheep · 27/10/2013 13:27

I find books easier to read - I tried my daughters kindle and hated it

I am not 'knobby' about it - I just prefer books

mignonnette · 27/10/2013 13:28

How Grin. I'll try...

Howsuper · 27/10/2013 13:29

I concede that Kindles are acceptable for holidays and may in that instance, and that instance ONLY, be used instead of paper books

Trills · 27/10/2013 13:29

The paperwhite has an optional light. So it's good in normal light (not shiny like a shiny screen but easy to read like a normal kindle) but you can also read it in the dark.

I think that in the US you can lend kindle books to other kindle users for 2 weeks - during which time the book is "unavailable" on your kindle, but that's only in the US so far

They are also launching a thing called "Matchbook" where publishers can sign up to say "if you have bought this book from Amazon you can get the kindle version for free or cheap".

mignonnette · 27/10/2013 13:32

Scarer

I've noticed that some Kindle books don't seem to 'get' into my brain so well and my concentration seems impaired by the format. I don't get so lost in the story when it is an EBook.

For me, holding a book and seeing books lying about will never be topped. I don't look down on people who use Ereaders though.

PacificDogwood · 27/10/2013 13:33

Oh, interesting, thanks Trills.

If they can do it in the States, then why not here?? Envy[stamps foot]

ScarerAndFuckItsAGhost · 27/10/2013 13:35

I agree mignonette, there is just a something about paper books. I find comfort in holding one. Smile

nokidshere · 27/10/2013 13:42

I love books and I love my kindle :)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/10/2013 13:44

They do invite genuinely different cognitive responses and encourage different ways of thinking.

I prefer books because I have never yet found a book substitute that I don't struggle with.

But it's not just affectation when people say they like knowing how much they've got left - they've become conditioned to respond subconsciously to the material composition of a book and can't respond the same way to a kindle. It was just the same problem when people moved from writing on scrolls to writing on codices.

I just think it should be each to their own.

LordPalmerston · 27/10/2013 13:51

I don't think owning books makes you clever.

OP posts:
Thymeout · 27/10/2013 13:51

The best thing about e-books is when you finish one, you can download the next in the series, or another by the same author, IN THREE MINUTES. It's magic!

Instead of having to go to Waterstone's, not find it on the shelf, order it and wait '5 working days' before you finally go back and buy it.

squoosh · 27/10/2013 13:52

It's facile to compare books to records or cassettes, books in one form or another have been around for millennia and have been available to the masses since the 15th century. I don't think it's 'knobby' to enjoy a physical book. It's a preference that's all.

A world without paper books sounds utterly depressing.

Thymeout · 27/10/2013 13:54

Oh - and my Kindle has a bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up as I read, so I know exactly how much is left.

Ohwhatwitcheryisthis · 27/10/2013 13:54

will this cause the end of civilisation? no-then what is the problem. i have both. so far my brain hasn't exploded and last time i looked i wasn't at all 'knobby' think my dh might have noticed this morningHalloween Grin

Trills · 27/10/2013 13:56

It's not knobby to have a preference, it IS knobby if you look down on people who prefer to get words from an author's brain into their brain via a different mechanism.

LordPalmerston · 27/10/2013 13:56

Yes agree the immediacy is both appealing and fatal !!

OP posts:
fanoftheinvisibleman · 27/10/2013 13:57

I like reading in a hot steam filled bath and passing on books.

I think the only thing knobby is calling other people knobby because they don't do things your way. The entire universe can read only on kindles, I really couldn't care less.

LordPalmerston · 27/10/2013 13:57

I think it's the romanticising of paper that irks.

OP posts:
squoosh · 27/10/2013 13:59

But why does it irk you? Some people just really love books. My Dad spends a large chunk of his time (and money) tracking down rare antiquarian editions.

I must phone him and tell him to cease with his knobbishness.
