"Oh I love a real book". "I can see how much ice got left". Oh fgs ebooks are way better one handed reading. Easy storage. Easy to buy and HUGE FONT option for when you've forgotten your glasses or are drunk

Why do people go into mini orgasm about paper ?

I never re read either.

I do know that and it is annoying.

The same is true for everything you 'purchase' from iTunes btw. - you don't own anything, you cannot leave it in your will, your content can be withdrawn.

Hmm

I've got books all over the place, some still in boxes from my recent move because I'm down a bookcase. I've also got DVDs all over the place. And I've got a Kindle.

Does any of this make me high-brow, low-brow, stupid, clever? I don't know, but I can't believe we've reached a point where people are hoiking up their judgy pants based on what form others read in. I literally couldn't give a shit whether you're reading a paperback, hardback or Kindle. As long as you're not reading anything 'written' by Katie Price, in which case I will judge you and judge you haaaaaaaaard!

Lol at leaving in will

Ahem.
The most poshest personages leave whole libraries in their wills, you will find, LordPalmerston.

Fact remains, you own books, you don't own eReader content.

I like both.

I still buy paper versions and collect books by my favourite authors. I also buy books from charity shops etc.

My kindle is used for cheap or free books. I never spendmore than £2 on a kindle book.

Both have their place.

I prefer to read real books. I find the kindle not as easy on the eyes at night when I'm tired. My son loves (and prefers) the Kindle - we're all different.

I don't tend to re-read, and while there are plenty of books about this house, I don't hang onto every book I read. I haven't got the space, so off they pop to the charity shop.I'm not precious about books, but I do prefer them for reading.

I have a system.
Books I think I'll want to read again & DS's set texts that he might like to make notes on, paper.
Reading in bed/holiday, Kindle.

A big warning; my kindle broke on the 2nd day of my summer holiday & I was distraught. I had to read everything that wasn't in Germanfrom the hotel library, which was err, interesting.

I can see how much I've got left

This is a bloody stupid argument. My Kindle displays how long it will take me to read the rest of the book based on my reading speed.

I do love books but I am also in love with my Kindle now.

I might feel a bit 'judgy' about people who decide that books harbour germs and took up space, while Kindles/ereaders etc are nice and clean.

I know that lots of people don't have a great deal of space - but I'd rather get rid of my TV if push came to shove.

Get rid of the telly?

Are you insane?

Report
pictish · 27/10/2013 15:24

Frau - you give up the telly to house a few books you've already read?
Nah - you wouldn't.

Report
usualsuspect · 27/10/2013 15:26

You don't have to keep every book you have ever read though.

Just get rid of some books and leave your telly alone.

I am watching The Tudors (yes years late I know, and so many things are just WRONG) and Anne Boleyn makes a point of saying to her servants "this is a Bible in English - all of you can read it if you want to".

If I weigh the lasting pleasure books give me against the pleasure given by TV then I think books win. I could easily manage with a radio - and watch programmes on desktop/ipad. We have rather a large old-fashioned ugly TV and I frequently resent the space it takes up. The colourful spines of books are much more attractive than a large blank screen!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/10/2013 16:02

trills - Anne Boleyn's servants might have been able to read an English Bible, but she was aristocratic then royal. Even her servants weren't 'the masses' (not to mention the fact, which is irrelevant but which bugs me, that shedloads more manuscript English bibles survive than copies of the first printed English Bible).

Report
Trills · 27/10/2013 16:08

I wasn't using that to say "the masses could read books", it was more a comment on being able to read this book is a big and important thing and we must all have a big meeting about it.

And here we are with access to all the books in the world, and some of them we can get pretty much instantly, aren't we lucky? :)

Report
LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/10/2013 16:09

Oh, I'm so sorry!

I am not totally with it.

But yes, I agree. We are so hugely lucky. This is why I love that we can even have this debate about kindles versus print books. That's such a privilege.

My Daughter wants me to leave my library of food books to her in my will. I do want my collection to stay together which I know sounds pretentious but it is the result of thirty years if collecting food writing.

I'd have no hesitation in choosing books over telly, currently dont have the latter since living alone, I like books arranged by colour I think they look quite nice in the shelves like that.

(bloomin' hard to find any specific books tho!)

I'd love a library, if I could afford my dream house then I'd have to have one with a fireplace Grin

libraires

I was really lucky to inherit loads of children's books which I passed to Ds when he was born. They're really outdated now but have been read by the 4th generation of book crazy kids and are sort of a family institution.

I do love my kindle I used to take up so much luggage space with books before I got one.

I love really trashy books. It's just so much nicer to curl up with a really good bit of chick lit or a light historical novel and a cup of tea - not the same as watching TV. And you can take it in the bath.

Trills · 27/10/2013 16:38

Is it #firstworldproblems or '21stcenturyproblems or something that we are having here?

It is a luxury to be able to debate it - like debating the relative merits of French vs New World wines :)
