For a film crew to block my front door?!

I live in a small town and there is currently a blockbuster film being filmed right outside my front door. Its a period setting so they have done loads of set decoration all around, including blocking up some windows etc.

Yesterday my dp came home (I wasn't in) and our front door had a door shaped block wedged in front. He grabbed a crew or security member who moved it and he told them it can't be there as I am due to go into labour any day (I'm 39 weeks) and it is our only exit/entrance so for fire and health and safety reasons it can't be there, or we at least need to know when!

Earlier on he popped in from work, and it was there again. He repeated the same speech from yesterday and they moved it, and told him when its up it will only be for 2 mins max.

Its up there again, and has been for nearly 45 minutes!!! I have rang and left a voicemail for the assistant location manager (his number was put on a info leaflet through our door a week ago).

Essentially I'm trapped in my house, and yes I could push it out with some force but that's not really fair on me is it?!

Its actually starting to make me feel quite panicky now.

AIBU?! Or what should I do?!

I'd guess the MIL is getting compensated but not the OP...

Lj8893 · 21/10/2013 22:18

My mil isn't being compensated. But they arnt blocking any of the pub doors.

That's outrageous! I'd assumed at least your MIL would get something. Feel free to read them the riot act or we will organise a MN boycott of the film. Grin

Lj8893 · 21/10/2013 22:23

Ooo I stand corrected.....she was compensated before filming began for the grand total of £1!!!

DH works in film construction and is 100% certain that this is AWFUL. Completely not on.

He says;
"Phone the location manager and tell them to come over now with a producer, and explain why your door was blocked overnight. Make sure a producer attends, it is that serious, don't be fobbed off.
At the end of any filming period, a standby carpenter should make the rounds taking out any 'door plugs' that are restricting access.
Refuse to comply with any more filming requests until they stick to the agreement of blockage for 2 mins with a crew member in attendance at all times the door is out of use, and they must notify you of each filming period.
If they do not meet you and do this, call the police to release you."

And I reckon, buy a fecking klaxon and blow it out if the window every 10 seconds every time they block the door!! Seriously Angry on your behalf, they sound like a real tin-pot crew.

grants1000 · 21/10/2013 22:25

Oooooh mil lives there, a stones throw from the Abbey, right behind the DT pub, I will call her tomorrow for more gossip!

grants1000 · 21/10/2013 22:30

In fact OP pm me your details, she takes no prisoners and would sort them out ASAP.

LongTailedTit · 21/10/2013 22:31

DH's tuppence again - if the location manager doesn't answer his mobile again, call your local police station (not 999) and insist they attend.
He also recommends talking to the security guards yourself, reckons they're usually more sound than the crew, and will try to look out for you.

They should all know better than this, it's seriously amateurish, you'd think a film of that level would have hired better people.

Lj8893 · 21/10/2013 22:31

Ahh it will be nice and quiet where she is, its just the abbey grounds and our road and then further up the road around the castle that's affected.

I guess its part of the price we pay for living in such a lovely area.

Taking all your advice on board ready for my meeting tomorrow with the location manager, thankfully filming finishes Wednesday!

LongTailedTit · 21/10/2013 22:37

DH again! He says to get hold of the unit nurse - they may have a bit more of a sympathetic ear for you and some leverage to help get this sorted out quickly.

They don't want to be called to an unexpected home birth caused by their crew's incompetence!

Honestly, he's astounded that any crew would behave this badly.

Sallyingforth · 21/10/2013 22:38

filming finishes Wednesday
So, they are continuing to muck you about and fob you off with excuses, knowing that they will have finished and gone by the time you have got advice and support.

grants1000 · 21/10/2013 22:39

OP I do love it there, mil says she has no mobile phone signal because of the Abbey!! We've been swimming at the boys school lots, mil thinks mine should go there Wink

Hope it all gets sorted soon and the baby arrives safe & well.

MrsBramleyApple · 22/10/2013 08:01

THIS is the twitter page for the film if that helps! Wink

Nyborg · 22/10/2013 08:26

I'dphone the local fire station (not 999), explain the situation and ask them to come over and bollock the location manager. Bet they would.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 22/10/2013 09:26

I live in a nearly village and I am taking DD to watch the filming in about an hour .... last night we were late for the dentist because I couldn't get parked because everywhere is parked up, even my secret free places.
But I am going for positive and exciting ... not going to happen again for many many years!
Glad you got it sorted out ... any chance the new DC will be called Bathseba? Or Carey?

harticus · 22/10/2013 09:27

Nyborg is right - breach of fire regs will shut a production down immediately.

Get money out of them - every production has contingency cash for things like this.

Lj8893 · 22/10/2013 09:38

Carey is actually my mums name so could work!! Haha!

Well we have seen the location manager this morning, and his assistant who were both very polite. We explained exactly what has happened and the rudeness we have recieved from other crew members and they were rightfully disgusted. They were extremely apologetic, and the assistant location manager is now stationed directly outside our door (although they have said they don't think there will be any filming in our direction today or very minimal) and she will be there the whole time any filming is going on.

We are both alot calmer now, only today left to go!!

When the BBC filmed Tess of the D'Ubervilles in my village, they painted over an old lady's front door whilst she was inside, without permission and had no intention of painting it back. They knocked on her door but because she does not open it for strangers, they went ahead and did it anyway

They also painted over another neighbour's windows and door without permission - they went ballistic on their return from work!

Eventually they got the BBC to re-paint both their house and the old lady's.

This was all for about 3 minutes in the programme. What a waste of money!

Lj8893 · 22/10/2013 10:22

That's shocking goosey some of these film and tv production teams really have an insane sense of entitlement!

The location manager has just told my dp he is calling a crew meeting to discuss manners.
