After reading multiple threads on whether or not eople have put their cental heating on yet, people that are struggling to afford to put it. what do you have yours set at? I've seen a lot of people say 18 but that's freezing in this house.

ours is set at 24.5 and is on roughly 4 hours a day giv or take. I hate the cold and we live in Scotland so unfortunately it's cold alot.

scarletforya, you may be able to sort that out by "balancing" your radiators - google for how-to guides.

Basically you increase flow through your cold radiators and increase it through your overhot ones, by fiddling with the lockshield valve. (The valve at the opposite end of the radiator from the knob you usually use to control the radiator, probably covered by a plastic cap.)

About 18 in the day, 19 in the evening seems about right.

LoonvanBoon · 17/10/2013 11:47

About 15/16, & up to 18/19 if it's very cold. I really feel the cold, too, so surprised by how high some people have theirs. Maybe it's just because our house is smallish & modern & fairly well-insulated, but it's really not chilly at these temperatures. My sons usually claim they're too hot to wear jumpers as it is!

ohmymimi · 17/10/2013 11:51

When I really have to put it on its 21 in my living room and take the chill off level, via the trv valves, in all other rooms. I give the house a half hour 25 blast when I get up if it is really cold, then turn it down after I've showered. It does off every time I go out and if I'm using my oven. But I live alone, in a small, well insulated bungalow, so I can please myself and adjust my needs. It's not that I can't afford utilities, I just resent the profiteering, so try to minimize my use.

17 or 18 degrees.

persimmon · 17/10/2013 13:02
  1. Never comes on below that.
sherbetpips · 17/10/2013 13:02

19 up to a max of 21 if its really cold.

prettypleasewithsugarontop · 17/10/2013 14:11

I turned it doen to 17 last night (had been at 21) after submitting meter readings bastard BG

dimdommilpot · 17/10/2013 14:12

I have it set at 18 1hr as we wake up and 2hr as DD as her bath n goes to bed. Ive noticed DP has turned it up to 20 though. I have the windows open today, letting a bit of air in. Will firmly shut them before DP gets home as he wont be impressed.

It's not on yet, but it'll be on 16 for bathtime/getting dressed, 15 for evening and 12 during the day.
Jumpers and blankets aplenty in this house, I couldn't bear 24C, I'd boil!
Oddly, in the summer I love the hot sunny weather, but in winter a bit of chill helps me go into a sort of hibernation mode for the darker days.

valiumredhead · 17/10/2013 14:48

It's not on at all yet, trying to bold of as long as possible.

Usually 16 ish.

LaRegina · 17/10/2013 14:49

18 or 19 - but DH constantly turns it up to 20. Unfortunately he seems to be allergic to jumpers and slippers, where as I cocoon myself and therefore start to boil a bit sooner than he does Hmm

pigsDOfly · 17/10/2013 14:59

Another one here whose heating won't come on lower than 20/21. Newish system (2 years). It's on 23 at the moment and when I'm sitting in the evening it's on 24/24.5. Even then when the thermostat goes off it seems to wait until the radiators are cold before kicking in again.

I've always got a couple of jumpers on and warm slippers in the evening, so short of sitting in several overcoats can't see how I can keep it any lower.

Maybe I'm just a chilly person but my house is very old and has very high ceilings that probably swallow most of the heat and I can't stand being cold.

EdithWeston · 17/10/2013 15:16

17-18 during the day (and it doesn't usually come on at that setting, until it's very cold out and/or I've had windows open to air the house).

Up to 21-22 for a couple of hours in the evening.

Bluecarrot · 17/10/2013 15:22

12c at night, 14c in the day except between 7-8am and 8-9pm for washing/changing clothes when its 16c. And we keep the thermostat in the warmest room of the house.

Will go up to 16-18ish constantly when baby comes in January and thermostat will move with baby.

fieldfare · 17/10/2013 15:26

Around 17 normally. Unless one of us is coming down with something or it's particularly chilly. Even then we put on a jumper and thick socks first. Gas fire sometimes goes on for an hour in the evening to warm the lounge.

ZombieMonkeyButler · 17/10/2013 15:33

Many people obviously have a very different thermostat/heating system to me. I don't get the varying temperatures thing at all, unless you physically get up & fiddle with it at set times Confused.

Ours is at 16 all year round. The heating just comes on when the house is colder than that, whether it is January or August. I always look a bit Confused when people ask me "is your heating on yet?". Technically speaking it's never off I suppose.

OHforDUCKScake · 17/10/2013 15:35

I only have the living room and kitchen radiator on. The upstairs radiators are off all year round.

But mainly at 21, sometimes 18, sometimes 22.

InMySpareTime · 17/10/2013 15:43

I set mine to "frost protect" mode for the summer (or if we're away in winter), and switch it to "heating" mode when it gets really cold.
Technically as it's not set to heating yet, our thermostat is set at 5C, but it never gets that cold. The coldest I've seen the thermostat measure was 7C when we got back from being away one cold Easter.

ivykaty44 · 17/10/2013 15:43

I have mine set at 15degrees - it comes on for two hours in the morning and four hours in the evening.

I can't sleep with the heating on as I wake up wheezy and I can't bear to be to hot - 24 degrees for me inside would feel like torture and I would have to stripe off down to my bra and pants Grin

Bluecarrot · 17/10/2013 15:48

Zombie I can set mine for different temps throughout the day and it does it automatically.

valiumredhead · 17/10/2013 15:48

Me too ivyGrin
