Aibu to think buying a newborn a designer wardrobe is a waste of money?

My friends daughter just had a baby. She's all excited being a granny and we were talking about Christmas presents. I said to her baby will only be 2 months old so it'll be easy getting a rattle or nice outfit. On this she said baby's father already bought baby a years worth of designer outfits.
Now she always says her daughter and partner are in debt and they keep on borrowing money from my friend. So why waste it on designer gear on baby who will wear it for a week pooing and throwing up on them making it impossible to sell on.

Having just scraped poo off the third outfit (cheap and cheerful) of the day, no YANBU.

Buying designer baby clothes and being in debt to do it is just ridiculous.

SantanaLopez · 14/10/2013 17:54

In that situation, it's silly, but if you've got the money, it's yours to spend as you see fit.

Rollermum · 14/10/2013 17:55

Should be clear - baby's outfit! Not mine...

YANBU. DD was in 9-12 month clothes by the time she was 6 months. She was in tiny baby when she was born, so that was 6 sizes in 6 months. Even accounting for all the poo explosions, she barely had chance to wear each outfit once! We cunningly bought whispers second hand clothes so at least we didn't waste much money on all those outfits she only wore once!

Was going to say, you can spend your money how you like.

But if you haven't got the money, what an utter waste.

thebody · 14/10/2013 18:00

tossers and money soon parted!

MrTumblesKnickers · 14/10/2013 18:00

If you have the money, why not. But if you don't it's absurd!

I have a friend who has been having serious and ongoing money problems. She's now pregnant with her second DD. I said something along the lines of "isn't it good you'll be able to reuse all your DD's old clothes" and she said that she was going to get rid of all her baby clothes and buy the new baby completely new stuff.

Bonkers.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 14/10/2013 18:08

Does the designer thing last longer.

Asda clothes tend to wear better than primark, but asda is normally a few pounds more.

BrokenSunglasses · 14/10/2013 18:08

It's not a waste of money of you get enjoyment out of it and you can afford it. I know I enjoyed cute baby clothes, although a years with of designer stuff does sound excessive.

It's really not your place to decide if the money is being wasted or not, it's not your money and it's not your baby.

Is it just me that immediately pictured a 'designer wardrobe' as one with two doors and fancy handles?Smile

Sirzy · 14/10/2013 18:10

quite sad that people are so keen to impress they will spend money they don't have just to keep up (if that is the case here!)

I guess things like that probably have a good resale value on ebay so I guess they could get the money back afterwards.

KatieScarlett2833 · 14/10/2013 18:13

Mine lived in babygros and knitted jumpers from grannies for as long as possible.
I never saw the point in designer clothes for them as I needed stuff that could be washed easily without ironing. Also, they grow so quickly. I liked to get my money's worth.
Now, my clothes are a different matter.... Grin

loveandsmiles · 14/10/2013 18:14

YABU ~ completely up to them what they spend their money on, but would be crazy to get into debt over spending.

I think when it's your first DC you do get carried away (I didBlush) and don't realise how quickly they grow and how quickly things get pooed on, then ruined. My first born had lots of designer and completely impractical outfits, now have DC5 and she has not a designer outfit to her name ~ you learn........

Thisuserhasblockedyou · 14/10/2013 18:14

I know they can spend their money as they wish which is absolutely fine if you are solvent.
And you can find gorgeous outfits at h&m etc. for me I'd rather save the money until they are a bit older and get more wear out of them.

But baby clothes don't need to last longer! My 4 month old has been in 6 - 9 month clothes for about a month now.

Like crohnically he barely got to wear some of his clothes.

Thisuserhasblockedyou · 14/10/2013 18:15

It's not their first, they've got 4 between them so plenty of experience.

YANBU but it's not your problem so I wouldn't give it any more headspace.

CuriosityCola · 14/10/2013 18:18

thebody you just made me splutter my tea everywhere Grin

Stripyjojocat · 14/10/2013 18:20

YANBU. A colleague who has just had a baby was constantly baby shopping when pregnant and was always telling us about the latest designer outfit she'd got her baby. I always said what is the point when they grow so fast and end up pooing/vomiting on them? Expecting my first baby in January and he'll be living in Primark and Asda for those first few months!

BlingBang · 14/10/2013 18:27

I don't get it for babies. Nicest things for them are babygrows and little jersey trousers and tops etc - all cute and cheap to buy. I always think I'd have little in common with someone who does this, but we spend lots of money on other stuff that some folk would think was crazy. We all have different priorities.

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 18:28

Someone has to so the rest of us can buy it nearly new from ebay in 6 months time Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/10/2013 18:28

I thought you meant an actual wardrobe! I have seen them about.

I don't get designer clothes for children in general given the high street has such a wide selection.

I knew someone who kitted her baby out in Ted Baker shirts from birth. Used to get really upset when he puked over them Grin

thebody · 14/10/2013 18:44

Grin the clothes would be wasted on me to be honest as wouldn't know a primark from a Gucci.

one of my friends had a massive plastic looking bag with a daft looking dog dangling from it, apparently designer and expensive.

it was shite.

designer baby makes me think of a WAG.
