My friends daughter just had a baby. She's all excited being a granny and we were talking about Christmas presents. I said to her baby will only be 2 months old so it'll be easy getting a rattle or nice outfit. On this she said baby's father already bought baby a years worth of designer outfits.
Now she always says her daughter and partner are in debt and they keep on borrowing money from my friend. So why waste it on designer gear on baby who will wear it for a week pooing and throwing up on them making it impossible to sell on.

What bemuses me is frilly dresses for baby girls - how uncomfy. Also, things that button up the back - not only hard to fasten but babies are lying down most of the time and it must be sore with popper or buttons digging in.

vests, babygros, cardigans, socks, hats, trousers to go over babygros when out in the cold, coat, snowsuit are all that is needed

If you have been very neglected as a child, you want to make sure you do your best for your children. For many parents, that partially translates into buying them the best.

I have an ex bf who had a shocking childhood. When him and his wide had their first baby, he spent a fortune in toys. Even hsi wife said he had gone totally overboard. But he had very very few toys and usually nothing at Christmas. He was trying to behave like a good father, without really knowing what that meant.

I don't buy 'designer' for babies but am happy to spend a fair bit of money on natural fabrics/ organic/ nice cashmere/ merino cardigans/ sheepskin etc for babies.

I would be fairly sure that when he says designer clothes, he means GAP/Next/Ted Baker/Diesel and not Ralph Lauren/Hugo Boss/Hermes..branded rather than designer. Or even 'DIOR' baby clothes bought from ebay that are fake i.e. DIOR do not and have never sold a dior baby bottle but you see lots on ebay.

Still a waste of precious ££ in my view (My 4 kids wear almost exclusively supermarket clothes tight) but not quite the bankrupting thing that it would otherwise be. They will learn and fast!

Bogeyface An acquaintance has a wardrobe full of Radley bags and refers to them as her designer bags. Well, compared to my run of the mill £30-35 Next bags I suppose they are.

If you have the money, why not spend on your dc? I agree that you should not go into debt. My dc's wardrobe comes from a mix of high street stores rather than one store.
