To wonder if this lady was correct? Got delivered someone else's Amazon order

More of a WWYD?

I recently placed a large order on Amazon, so it's been delivery galore the last few days.

Tonight I had three packages, two of them were fine but the third box, despite having my name on the outside label, had someone else's order inside - complete with invoice, name and address. The value of the order was about £50.

I called Amazon's customer service, they took note of the error and thanked me 'for my honesty'. I asked what I should do with the box; they said to keep it in a safe place and they would contact me about it later. I asked how long am I meant to keep it; if they never get in touch, can I dispose of the contents (toys) by giving them to charity? The lady on the phone said that in fact they would really like it if I could do that, and I don't need to wait - I can do that immediately.

I'm feeling a bit odd about it. What if I give the items away, but Amazon then change their minds and ask me to return them? The order had a significant value - I wouldn't worry if it was a fiver, but are they really going to write off fifty quid? Could the lady have been wrong?

I also hope they replace the other woman's order quickly and there isn't a little boy having a shit birthday because of this cock up! But I guess I'll never know if there's a happy or sad ending to this story...

If you have the persons name and address you could see if you can get a phone number for her and contact her directly if you are worried about a wee boy missing items for his birthday.

Primafacie · 12/10/2013 00:31

Thanks Jem, I did look her up online. but no success. She's on the Isle of Man.

50quid is nothing to amazon. Keep it 3 weeks, if you haven't heard back then dispose of or keep.

I had this once but inside was 7kg of gourmet popcorn kernels. I ended up sharing it out with my popcorn loving friends.

CocacolaMum · 12/10/2013 00:35

they will replace her order straight away, don't worry about it

Primafacie · 12/10/2013 00:39

Thanks both, I will stop fretting!

It might be someone ordering early xmas presents. Don't worry, amazon can get a new package to them just as quick as you could get it sent. As you've reported it they'll know to send one right away

Primafacie · 12/10/2013 00:53

No, there is no email address for the other customer.

Yes Alexandrite, that's what I hope as that's what I was doing!

You have the right to keep unsolicited goods and not be charged for them. Happy days Grin

EeyoreIsh · 12/10/2013 08:54

we had this a few years ago, a camcorder was mistakenly sent and we were told to keep it Shock I think my folks sent it back though.

DorothyMantooth · 12/10/2013 09:08

We had an issue with delivery of a laptop from amazon. The driver delivered it to a flat in another block near us and when we didn't receive it after the tracker told us that it was delivered, we called customer services. We had another one delivered within 2 days, no questions asked. Then the lady from the other flat brought round the original laptop! Amazon are so massive that to them it is nothing to write off a £500 order because their delivery driver couldn't read an address label. They didn't even ask for a signature for either of the packages!

Who was the delivery company? Phone their nearest office and ask them to come and collect it. They can then deliver it to the right customer. They can also investigate the problem so it doesn't happen to you or others again.

Was it Royal Mail?

PeppermintPasty · 12/10/2013 09:15

We had a case of champagne delivered to our door once. Now, I know it's alcohol, and alcohol=good, but I really do not like champagne. This fact may have played a part in my calling the delivery co. (not Amazon, can't recall who). They weren't bothered in the slightest and said we could keep it!!

Very odd I thought. We googled the bottles, and they were vair vair expensive. We gave them away to classier people than us.

MsJupiterJones · 12/10/2013 09:20

The reverse happened to my husband last Christmas: he bought some Christmas presents from Amazon but they were sent to an address in a completely different part of the country.

Amazon refused to send out replacements and said they would have to wait for the person they'd been sent to to return them and then they'd send them on. This process all took several weeks by which time Christmas had passed. DH was very Hmm

Perhaps they've changed their policy?

LimitedEditionLady · 12/10/2013 09:44

Yeah apparently youre allowed to keep it,it happened to my friend and the conpany said if you recieved it you keep it.

dillite · 12/10/2013 10:21

I had that happen. I ordered a dolls pram for £50 and then when the delivery came there were two prams- one that I ordered and one that I had simply looked at as it was 3 times as much as the one I bought. I was told to keep it as the package had my name on it. Only paid for the one that I bought. Funny thing is that obe pram came from Milton Keynes and the other obe grom Germany. I did have one very happy little girl.

Hi Prim

The best thing is to send them an email saying you as per the telephone call will treat the goods as your own after 7 days if they do not contact you to arrange collection.

They are not classed as unsolicited goods. Unsolicited goods are defined by the Unsolicited Goods and Serves Act as amended by the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) regs, as goods sent to you by another person with a view to you acquiring them. Therefor the regs do not apply to goods sent to you by mistake. Clearly these have been sent to you by mistake. The law then says you have some small responsibility towards the goods hence my advice to email them.

hope this helps.

DoJo · 12/10/2013 11:11

Just in case anyone else is in the same position - this kind of mistake doesn't count as unsolicited goods and it is up to the company whether or not you can keep them (although many will as it's cheaper to write off errors than process them). There is a specific definition of unsolicited goods to which the legislation applies and a mistake in delivery doesn't qualify.

DoJo · 12/10/2013 11:12

Oops - cross post with honest there. That'll teach me to take too long to type!

Lilicat1013 · 12/10/2013 11:15

I got someone else's Amazon order (DVDs). I was sent a free postage label to print and asked to send it back to them when I contacted Amazon. No thanks or anything. I was not impressed.

SouthernComforts · 12/10/2013 11:15

The day the newest iPhone came out last year, my ex got a knock on the door and a courier handed him a box and walked off. Wrong name but right address. Brand New iPhone thank you very much!

greenfolder · 12/10/2013 11:19

We had this last year-but it was a bike! Called amazon as I did not recognise the name on the package. Turned out it was a gift and the giver had clicked the wrong house number. The amazon lady was amazed at my honesty! I was amazed that anyone would not phone-i delivered it myself as it was a christmas gift

honestpointofview · 12/10/2013 11:25

Dojo - I thought i was taking too long to type as well. Besides your post out it much better!
