To wonder if this lady was correct? Got delivered someone else's Amazon order

More of a WWYD?

I recently placed a large order on Amazon, so it's been delivery galore the last few days.

Tonight I had three packages, two of them were fine but the third box, despite having my name on the outside label, had someone else's order inside - complete with invoice, name and address. The value of the order was about £50.

I called Amazon's customer service, they took note of the error and thanked me 'for my honesty'. I asked what I should do with the box; they said to keep it in a safe place and they would contact me about it later. I asked how long am I meant to keep it; if they never get in touch, can I dispose of the contents (toys) by giving them to charity? The lady on the phone said that in fact they would really like it if I could do that, and I don't need to wait - I can do that immediately.

I'm feeling a bit odd about it. What if I give the items away, but Amazon then change their minds and ask me to return them? The order had a significant value - I wouldn't worry if it was a fiver, but are they really going to write off fifty quid? Could the lady have been wrong?

I also hope they replace the other woman's order quickly and there isn't a little boy having a shit birthday because of this cock up! But I guess I'll never know if there's a happy or sad ending to this story...

You certainly don't need to go on a detective hunt to track down the delivery company or the real customer. You didn't order these goods, you told Amazon you didn't order them, if Amazon want them back it's up to them to collect them. If you don't hear from them within 3 weeks they don't want them back.

They will send the real buyer a new order.
If you're still worried email Amazon and tell them the goods can be collected from you at an agreed time which suits you (eg10 am on a Saturday not the usual "anytime between 8 to6" which so many businesses think is reasonable) . You don't have to take the goods to a post office or delivery point

I am awaiting some kids ps3 games from amazon which were meant to delivered last week so I expect some other lucky bugger has got them. Unfortunately it was my step daughters birthday on Wednesday. Oops!

Moja - that lucky bugger isn't me!

Don't worry about the other family. They mucked up one of my orders before Christmas last year, and I only noticed on the 23rd. They had someone deliver the parcel at 10pm on Christmas eve. They were awesome. I'm sure they'll sort out an evening delivery for them.

I've had incorrect items delivered before, and i've been able to keep them.

this happened to me this weekend too. I have light bulbs that fit my kitchen. amazon said i could keep them :)

Two years ago, we got a Sylvanian Family house instead of a scooter. I didn't open the package because I didn't want prying eyes peeping inside. The carrier took the house back when they delivered the scooter... on Christmas eve!

southerncomforts your husband needs to check out his credit rating as a matter of priority. He may well find that someone is using his identity.

i contacted Amazon a few months ago as my order hadn't arrived 7 days after the expected delivery date. They sent out a replacement order to me (free) and then i got an email a fortnight later telling me that they had received my order back and they were refunding me!

SouthernComforts · 13/10/2013 14:30

Mumandboys - he's not my husband thank god Grin and his credit rating was shocking anyway so he wasn't worried.

We made a mistake with an order from Amazon last year, contacted them and they sent the correct item (coffee beans) to us and said to keep the mistaken order (ground coffee)!!
