To let dd 16 get a cab at 4am in morning

Aroundtheworldandback · 11/10/2013 23:25

Dd16 has 'told' me she is getting up at 4am tomorrow with a friend and has booked a cab (she's paying) to take them to London to catch a glimpse of her boy band idol's GIRLFRIEND arriving at her hotel.

I have used the cab company before but am still worried. Am I being paranoid? She seems to think now she's 16 she's an adult...

At 15/16/17 i was out working until 2/3am most weekends. Two of us used to walk home. That was only a decade ago & things havent changed much.

I say let her go. Out of curiosity is it one direction/little mix that shes going to see?

Aroundtheworldandback · 11/10/2013 23:56

Bonkers they certainly are. They are waking up at 4, will arrive at hotel at 5. Not that that makes it any better!

och well you are only 16 once I suppose if they cant be daft now when can they who is the GF im dying to know

mrsjay · 11/10/2013 23:58

dd1 went from scotland to london 3 times a year on the over night train to london with another for a school conference thing so I guess a taxi to town is nothing

Donkeyok · 11/10/2013 23:59

Im with Finola the streets of London at 4 am in the morning Shock

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 11/10/2013 23:59

At least she will have a mobile phone and be able to "scream for Mam" if anything untoward should happen - if she wanted to go to a rave or a festival and be away for three nights in a tent in a field with "some friends" who you'd never met, then worry, but let her go - she'll have a memory that will last all her life, either of getting a glimpse of her idol in the flesh or standing around freezing her tits off in the rain for several hours in disappointment. Grin She will be fine Grin

Thank you MyNameIs you have calmed my nerves a little and saved me from the nitol tonight.. Nickname it's The Wanted..

OP posts:
mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:02

oh who from the wanted has a famous girlfriend ?

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2013 00:03

Oh right, I didn't realise the girlfriend was famous too and that there'd be other fans there.

I just had this mental image of your DD and her friend, hiding in the bushes with binoculars, spying on some random average stranger booking into the hotel Grin

In that case I wouldn't worry too much. I presume she'll have a mobile on her?

Just make sure you re-tell the cringeworthy story at every Christmas dinner, during her adult life Grin

CocacolaMum · 12/10/2013 00:06

Arianna Grande? never heard of her (googled) but I presume it is her?

how on earth does dd know where she is staying anyway?

TeamSouthfields · 12/10/2013 00:11

I was working full time at 16...

curlew · 12/10/2013 00:13

It's an insane thing to do- but why on earth wouldn't you let them use a taxi? We live in the back of beyond and dd had been using taxis since she was about 14.

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:15

I didnt loiter outside a stage door waiting to see wham oh not me they didn't come in or our the buggers

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:16

Arianna Grande? never heard of her (googled) but I presume it is her?

not a clue either

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2013 00:18

they didn't come in or out the buggers

Erm...George Michael probably did but he kept it very much a secret during those days! Grin

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:20

he was very in in his wham days Grin

MyNameIsWinkly · 12/10/2013 00:20

She's a nickleodeon person who sings a bit. Hotel location is all over twitter, and lots of other places I'm sure.

It's a shame the sheer gorgeousness of central london early in the morning, tranquil and lovely as the sun rises, will be utterly wasted on the op's dd :) I loved London between 5 & 7 am when I worked shifts there.

mrsjay · 12/10/2013 00:22

I have just googled her not a clue but dds dont really watch Nickelodean these days

pigletmania · 12/10/2013 00:39

Don't even entertain the idea, tell her to go back to bed!

SlangKing · 12/10/2013 01:43

Like others in this thread, I spent my mid teens travelling all over watching punk bands. Usually on trains (returning from London meant waiting at Waterloo for the 3.30am 'paper' train) but sometimes in rented Transits or trucks whos drivers weren't always sober - drinking n driving seemed almost compulsory back then compared to now. Worth noting that taxi drivers and others weren't CRB checked back then. No CCTV either, so I'd suggest your DD is safer than we and our teen g/fs used to be. Also, from attending a zillion gigs and playing in a band myself for 10 years, I think such audiences are about as safe as crowds get. The worst danger she's in is if her and her mates get within 10 yards of their idols - they'll claw each others eyes out for an autograph or 'selfie' snaps. I'm joking, they can get a bit feisty but a trodden foot or ripped top are about as serious as it gets. I have NO CLUE as to the names of The Wanted, or their g/fs,, but why would I? Same reason your DD wouldn't know that The Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell dated Hazel O'Connor. "Who?!" Happily, she'll likely never endure a Rick Wakeman solo either. Don't even try to make sense of why she'd want to see a g/f walk into a hotel. Different era, different tastes. Let her go and enjoy herself and try not to worry about it.

MusicalEndorphins · 12/10/2013 06:23

I'd let her, like others, I was living on my own at that age. Be relieved about the cab, my friend and I would have thumbed a ride to save money.

Helpyourself · 12/10/2013 07:34

Did she go OP?
I'm torn between ofgs and meh that's quite sweet- it would be safe and fun, just a bit silly.

NynaevesSister · 12/10/2013 07:42

So your teen daughter actually wants to get up at 4am to be somewhere at 5am on a weekend, she is going with a friend, has organised the money and everything else herself, and will be spending the morning outside in the fresh air with a group of other girls?

What is wrong with that? Would you stop her is she did all the same, but to go play netball or hockey?

Aroundtheworldandback · 12/10/2013 07:48

Thank you all so much- just woken up to a text sent at 4.30am saying they were on way and cab driver thought they were sooo krazzyyy. Tell me about it. Where did I get her from? Another text saying they're 'in the queue'. And yes i'll ensure she'll be re-living this cringe-worthy night for evermore. Especially if her homework's not done by tomorrow eve!

flipchart · 12/10/2013 08:03

I would have no issue with the taxi. Ds1 has regularly been using one since he was 14.

With the reason why they need to, well I would just roll my eyes and think they were fools!
It makes a funny story in a few years time, you know the sort, ' remember when......'

I'm guessing she'll be ok.
