To think that shops souldnt change their sizing just to make fat people feel better

Was shopping in H&M and was looking through the basics range - needed leggings and t shirts etc. took some leggings to try on, an picked up a pair of medium without going it much thought, as I am a size 10-12. Luckily I did try them on because they were massive on me. When I went to look for a smaller size I noticed a sign saying they had 'revolutionised' their sizing for the basics range to allow for bigger sizing, which is fair enough.

But why mess around with all the rest of the sizes?! Why not just label it xxl rather than changing medium to fit a size that would have fit a 16-18.

And to make it all even more stupid, it was only their basics range that had changed, the rest of the stuff was still a normal size.

I ended up at the till with a stupid range of sizes, with some smalls, some mediums and one large for their stupidly small skinny jeans. An this is just one store.

Simple Hester. Stating in one breath the dress size and then referring to Fat people and vanity sizing. It's saying look at me, aren't I good!

specialsubject · 12/10/2013 13:47

the OP's title is actually the thinking behind vanity sizing. Yes, it is insulting and patronising, but that's the marketeers for you.

and that's why we cannot buy clothes without trying them on, as all sizes are variable and random.

buy as few new clothes as you can. It's all we can do.

Writerwannabe83 · 12/10/2013 13:47

we are bigger in general - bigger feet, taller. I am not fat; I am fit and healthily slim but I tower over both my parents and have a size 8 foot

I suppose this is why BMI might be considered the best way of measuring obesity as it takes a person's build into account.

HesterShaw · 12/10/2013 13:52

But ilovemyself why is the word fat any ruder than the word skinny? Vanity sizing is a phrase - the op didn't make it up. There have been some really unpleasant remarks made about slim people on this thread, including the lovely assertion that they are "rightly slagged off".

Writerwannabe83 · 12/10/2013 13:55

My guess is that slimmer women hate being called skinny just as much as bigger women hate being called fat.

Both words are negative descriptions with negative associations and can cause equal amounts of offence.

Mojavewonderer · 12/10/2013 13:59

What crawled up your butt and died OP to make you so bloody rude!
I am the same size as you OP and I really couldn't care less what fricking size the labels on my clothes say as long as they fit. Jeez.

pianodoodle · 12/10/2013 14:05

I am the same size as you OP and I really couldn't care less what fricking size the labels on my clothes say as long as they fit. Jeez

Ah now, see by stating you're the same size as the OP you've blatently just come for a stealth boast, according to this thread Grin

beepoff · 12/10/2013 14:12

Sizing is ridiculous now. I'm not thin by any means but not fat either, average height, and often have to get size 8 in some shops (the smallest size they make). What do genuinely thin people wear?! I guess they just can't shop in those places (supermarkets, M&S and shops for more mature people are the worst).

And yeah this is a stealth boast - I'm not skinny OR fat so ner.

kali110 · 12/10/2013 14:17

H'm and new look are awfull for tjeir sizes!im under no illusion that im some super model but can fit in 14 bottoms. In h&m i had to buy 16 bottoms.
I can fit in 10-12 bodycon dresses depending on type as im 10-12 in tops, new look i couldnt even get a 14 down to my waist!i was in tears that nothing fit, so went to tk max and promptly found normal 12 dress that fit and was bit loose
I will never go either of these and buy clothes without trying now as iv noticed the sizes getting smaller and smaller.

happydaze77 · 12/10/2013 14:20

You're perfect then beepoff Smile

Joking aside though, it sounds as though you're probably bang on 'normal' on a weight chart. Yet, people might describe you as thin as you take a size 8, which is not in the middle of normal an a dress size chart.
Daft really.

I remember small used to be 10 to 12 in some shops.

rosieposey78 · 12/10/2013 16:02

Also i found that h and m sometimes come up small. I could buy maternity tops there in my correct size despie my massive boobs but trousers and shorts would not fit.op. did you mean to be so rude?

rosieposey78 · 12/10/2013 16:08

Petite ranges another pain. I a short and fat. So it is hard to find
large sizes in petite ranges.

farrowandbawl · 12/10/2013 16:17

Clothes are getting bigger.

DD's school shirts and jumpers are aged 13 are far too big for her but fit me nicely. I've had to buy her 11-12 again.

There is a big difference in sizes between last years jumpers and this years when I lay one on the other. I even took them back to the place where I bought them from and was told that it was vanity sizing. For school uniform.

Personally, I think it needs to stop, it's not really doing anyone any favours.

farrowandbawl · 12/10/2013 16:20

Before anyone accuses me of stealth boasting, please read my 3rd paragrah.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 12/10/2013 16:22

I don't see why saying the size you are is 'stealth boasting': it's just the size you are.

This thread is mad.

farrowandbawl · 12/10/2013 16:26

I would say it was boasting if the sizes were constant, but they're not. As pointed out several times in the thread.

It's confusing, fustrating, annoying and at worst - a waste of money - regarless of what size you or the clothes are (or supposed to be).

fatlazymummy · 12/10/2013 16:34

Whoever said we are bigger in general is correct. Also most women used to wear girdles and foundation garments to pull themselves in. My Mum used to wear heavy duty girdles right up to the 70's , and she wasn't even big.
When I was a teenager (1970's) fashionable clothes shops only stocked 10's, 12's ,14's and occassionally 8's. Anyone who didn't fit into these sizes either had to buy kids clothes if small, old ladies clothes if bigger, or sew their own.

PaperSeagull · 12/10/2013 16:43

I think the OP wouldn't have received so much grief if she had just left the word "fat" out of her title: "Shops shouldn't change their sizing just to make people feel better." Still true and I don't think anyone could object to the phrasing.

Having said that, I do think some of the posts in this thread have been really rude, aggressive, and OTT. Far worse than using the word "fat" in the thread title, IMO.

I do wish there were standard sizes that we could rely on. Vanity sizing is ridiculous. It's also a clever marketing ploy. I would imagine that people are more likely to buy an item of clothing if it is in a smaller size.

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/10/2013 16:43

It is true we are just bigger now.

I'm 5'6 and pretty slim but look like a cart horse when standing next to my Nan,she's like a pixie. She's over 5ft, just, and is just so much smaller than me in every way. Except shoe size.

garlicvampire · 12/10/2013 16:46

I don't see why saying the size you are is 'stealth boasting': it's just the size you are.

Hmm, Trucks, that only works one way, doesn't it? I take a size 16-20 in chainstore clothing, but my 'real' size is 20-24.

Who thinks I'm boasting? Hmm

lljkk · 12/10/2013 16:58

I think it's great we all come in different sizes.
BUT, I don't like clothes shopping. And not being at least plump is a bit of a pain coz I have to shop around more. I'm not a usual size.

The clothes that fit my hips/bottom are too lose in the waist (I'm not pudgy enough). And too short in the leg (people with my size hips-bottom are usually shorter). The very funny part is I have rather short legs for my height! If I was a more normal leg length for my height, I don't know what I'd do. Being long in the body means I have to shop around to get clothes that cover my tum.

Wouldn't it be better if women's clothes were more like mens, with numbers for waist & hip circumf, & leg length? Or bust-shoulders-waist circumfs & length drop? So much easier to find what was going to suit.

Owllady · 12/10/2013 17:06

I am almost 5ft 10, my Gran is 4ft 11, my Mum is 5 2
I do need to lose weight, granted
but I looked amazonian in comparison Confused and always have done
why are they all so petite and i am built like an ox?

pianodoodle · 12/10/2013 17:07

OK. You're allowed to post your size, but smaller women aren't because it's "stealth boasting"

Fair enough?
