To not like non-family middle names

Coffeeandajigsaw · 11/10/2013 15:14

I'm of the opinion that middle names should be family names, or possibly something with significance, not names just chosen because you like the sound of it. Yes I know it's a free world and my own middle name is very much a 'vanity' middle name (ta, mum) but I just think it's a bit silly. Pick a dead relative, or even a living one, or if you hate your family, just don't bother with a middle name at all!

Especially hate filler names, too many Isla Graces and Jessica Roses!

Sorry if I'm being offensive, was just interested to know if this is just me?

You can like/dislike whatever you want but YABU to think that everyone should do the same. What if you really really like two names, are completely torn between the two and so use both?

Heath27 · 11/10/2013 16:10

Why does it matter? Who gives a flying ..... None of my 3 kids have any middle names at all, problem solved!

LillyGoLightly · 11/10/2013 16:10

I have to say I don't have any preference or particular opinion on what other people wish to name their children.

I however have given my 2 DD's middle names, they each have middle names after important and very close family members who have passed and I love than I can tribute them in this way.

My middle name on the other hand was given because my Mum and Dad couldn't agree on a name for me so decided the only was to resolve the problem was to stick all the names they liked into a hat and pull out 2. The first pulled out was my given name and the second my middle name. Considering my mum told me before she died the other names that we in the hat, I think myself lucky as I was very nearly called Fliss!!! aka Felicity!!!

KitCat26 · 11/10/2013 16:16

I don't care what anyone else does, that's their business.

My DDs middle names are family names. Vanity (the middle names do actually 'go' with the first names) and lack of imagination were the deciding factors.

We had enough trouble agreeing on first names, it was a blessed relief to not have to think of any more!

neunundneunzigluftballons · 11/10/2013 16:21

It is a tradition in my DHs family not to give boys middle names I love that tradition.

gordyslovesheep · 11/10/2013 16:22

you'd hate me OP - not only have they got TWO middle names - one of them is completely flippant and daft Grin

Oswin · 11/10/2013 16:22

My dds middle name is Megan. Named after my dead dog meg Grin.

Dogs are family right?

Cbeebiesismyworld · 11/10/2013 16:22

I have 2 DDs, whose middle names are Rose and Grace. Fortunately I don't give a shit what other people think.

gordyslovesheep · 11/10/2013 16:22

think Moonlight, Moonbeam and Moonglow !

SoupDragon · 11/10/2013 16:23

Good for you. Doesn't mean your opinion is right though.

AuntyEntropy · 11/10/2013 16:23

I have a filler-just-for-the-sake-of-it middle name and I hate it, it seems so pointless. So YANBU except that meaning can come in many ways, not just family connections. And the other good reason to pick a middle name is because you've gone for something really risky as a first name and you want to give them a safe fallback choice.

katese11 · 11/10/2013 16:24

I agree OP,

I have two middle names, one of which is my maternal grandmothers names, and the other is just a one-syllable filler name to make my name sound bouncier, so to speak. I don't like it, and I'm tired of hearing the same middle names all the time. Lets be honest, are 9/10 of the Lily-Mays out there REALLY named after someone else?

Come on guys, stop attacking the OP for expressing her opinion. It is a forum after all. You can express your views without being vile.

SoupDragon · 11/10/2013 16:32

But is Sparkle a family name MrsD? Great Aunt Sparkle perhaps...

Then why haven't you changed it to a 'family' name?

or possibly something with significance

Er, they do. They were chosen by your parents who loved you and named you.

DS's middle name is after someone who saved the world. Beat that for significance.

Wink
tracypenisbeaker · 11/10/2013 16:36

for the record, i don't mind middle names that arent necessarily family related, but I do think they should have some sort of meaning/ imagination rather than just a noise added onto the first name.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 11/10/2013 16:40

Seeing as you asked, I find giving brand new little human beings the name of a dead person they never knew an exercise in vanity and burdens a child with the legacy of someone you cared about.

ConsideringTheFuture · 11/10/2013 16:42

Ds1 has df's name. Ds2 has a name that happened to be both mine and df's grandfather's middle name.

For me, I would only give a family name as a middle name. It's a nice connection...I wouldn't see the point of chucking in a middle name if it had no meaning.

I couldn't really care less the reasons other people have for their kids.

MrsCakesPremonition · 11/10/2013 16:43

I prefer middle names to be family names and that would always be my personal choice but YABU to expect everyone else on the planet to share that view, why can't people just pick two names they like the sound of if that's what they want to do? There must be bigger things in life you can sweat about, if not, hurray to you.

Binkyridesagain · 11/10/2013 16:45
