To not tip my hairdresser

She does a great job but I want to pay what is on the price list but I feel bad....am I the only one who doesn't tip?

I always tip. Have even tipped when I've not been happy but I can be a wimp!

peanutbuttersarnies · 08/10/2013 19:49

I tip my local hairdresser who only charges 14.50. It feels odd to tip at a big hairdresser where they are charging 50 +

ILoveAFullFridge · 08/10/2013 19:50

I pay what is on the price list, but leave a tip for the hair-washer since reading (here on MN, IIRC) that they are usually paid a pittance as trainees.

drawsofdrawers · 08/10/2013 19:50

I do sometimes and other times I don't. I pay £100 for a cut and colour and think it's enough!

Ragwort · 08/10/2013 19:51

I never tip hairdressers, actually I rarely go to a hairdresser. I usually give the person who washes my hair £1.

Ragwort · 08/10/2013 19:51

£100 Shock - luckily I am happy with my grey hair !!!

duckyfuzz · 08/10/2013 19:52

I don't, I pay £50 a go for c&b then about another £100 every 3-4 months for colour, I think this is more than enough!

PuppyMonkey · 08/10/2013 19:53

Never tipped a hairdresser in my life (47).

ShakeAndVac · 08/10/2013 19:53

I never tip hairdressers either, or tip it all for that matter. Things are expensive enough without having to prop up people's wages. Hmm
That should be the employer's job. Nothing to do with me. Why should I cough up extra on TOP of what I'm paying when they're only doing their job?
It's a ridiculous notion.

VBisme · 08/10/2013 19:53

I tip my hairdresser, I get charged about £80, but she ALWAYS gets me in at short notice.

I consider it a fine for not being organised Wink

Binkyridesagain · 08/10/2013 19:53

If I could find a hairdresser who could cut curly hair properly then I would tip them.

VBisme · 08/10/2013 19:55

My hairdresser is self-employed and "hires" a chair in a salon, I tip £20 per time because I know that she'll fit me in whenever I need at short notice.

I think many hairdressers work in this way, don't they?

HeadsDownThumbsUp · 08/10/2013 19:57

It depends. Do they own the salon? Are they an employee on wages? Do they rent a chair?

In the past, I never tipped hairdressers, and then I learned that most hairdressers in good salons don't actually get paid a salary/wages but pay to rent a chair in the salon, and also pay for all their products and tools. In practise this means that they can often lose money, if they don't have enough clients. But they don't set the salon prices, the salon owner does. So the small tip makes a big difference. If I like the cut and think they did a great job, I tip 10/15% just as I would in a restaurant. It gets shared out between the stylist and the trainee washing your hair.

Finola1step · 08/10/2013 19:59

No I don't tip. I have my hair cut by the senior stylist and pay a fair whack for the privilege. I do tip one of the juniors if they wash my hair and I do give my hairdresser something in her Christmas card.

Finola1step · 08/10/2013 20:00

Oh but I do tip the young stylist who cuts my son's hair because she does wonders with him.

Dawnywoo · 08/10/2013 20:01

I tip my hairdresser £3 and the hair washer £1 if I am happy with the service, but I know I am not paying over the odds in the first place. its a bit like taxi's though. I sometimes wonder why we do it for them but not the girl on the checkout or the bus driver.

mirry2 · 08/10/2013 20:12

I tip the hairdresser as long as he/she isn't the owner.

HappyMummyOfOne · 08/10/2013 20:29

Not in a salon as they charge an arm and a leg for just 90 mins work if a colour as well. Lately i use a mobile one as more convenient and she charges very little so I do top it up as know she cant possibly be making much.

MinesAPintOfTea · 08/10/2013 20:38

How do you tip? Silly question maybe, but if I tip a waiter I leave change on the little dish the receipt comes in. this obviously isn't an option with hairdressers...

LaGuardia · 08/10/2013 21:28

I do not tip. No-one tips me in my job but I work in the public sector so I supposed to act like a serf anyway Envy

itsnothingoriginal · 08/10/2013 21:37

Can't afford to get my hair cut never mind leave a tip!

When I had a job I would tip but I'm now thinking I should train as a hairdresser as at least it is recession proof unlike the public sector Sad

LondonInHighHeeledBoots · 08/10/2013 21:46

I've only tipped twice, as I've only been happy with my haircut twice. Listen to me, do what I actually want to my hair and make it look good and I will tip. hack a bit off my hair in a random fashion unrelated to what I asked for and I won't.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 08/10/2013 21:51

I tip my hairdresser, but not the person who washes my hair. Mainly because I am clutching my bag and just focusing on getting to my seat and I don't quite know when I should give her the money.
Should I give her the pound then or wait until the end ? Sometimes I can't remember who it is. If I tip the hairdresser, will she give some to the girl who washes my hair?

HeadsDownThumbsUp · 08/10/2013 21:59

Yeah, if you tip your hairdresser they will give a cut to the person who washes your hair.

Carpediem2007 · 08/10/2013 22:01

I have used the local college where trainees practice under the tutor's supervision and it is incredibly cheap, £25 for highlights instead of my old £100 in a salon.

As these trainees are not paid, I leave £5 tip each, so £10 if 2 did it and they always stare at the money like I must have made a mistake. I have been very happy with the results so far and they seem pleased to get a big tip - but no salary as they are in training (I hated working for free when I trained in a different job as I had no time left to work to earn a living while in training and I could hardly afford to buy food).

If you are broke, try to find out if there is a college doing NVQ in hairdressing locally :-)
