My mother is laughing at me

Last time I invite her for Christmas!

not really, she's lovely, just a traditionalist

Additionally, I'm from the Midlands and my family have always called them Yorkie puds :)

ShakeAndVac · 08/10/2013 20:35

plus I'm not a fucking dinner Nazi so YANBU, eat whatever the hell you want

I'm not a fucking dinner Nazi, but I am a staunch Christmas Traditionalist. Grin

The rest of my family usually have pork or chicken for Christmas dinner- never beef or turkey. Sister and I are vegetarian. We always have Yorkshires, made by my brother in law who is from Yorkshire. We all contribute something to the dinner and that is his bit. He always mis-times it and has them ready about 20 minutes after the rest of the main course, so they're like an extra Yorkshire pudding course between main course and dessert.

I think the novelty wears off if you have them with all roasts though. Apple sauce with pork, yorkshire pudding and horseradish with beef, mint sauce with lamb, cranberry and bread sauce with turkey.

Christmas dinner:
Turkey,
yorkshire puddings,
roast potatoes,
mashed potatoes,
pigs in blankets,
creamed swede,
roast carrots,
sprouts,
red cabbage,
roast parsnips,
gravy,
cranberry sauce,
bread sauce.

ipswichwitch · 08/10/2013 20:47

I would have them with every meal frankly. Since we are spending Christmas at home this year and will have a newborn DC2, I'm planning on a M&S roast to just shove in the oven with veg (no fecking sprouts, they're a travesty), but I will make my own Yorkshires. And they will be smothered in gravy and bread sauce with a giant pile of stuffing, peas and parsnips. So there.

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 08/10/2013 20:47

They are defo a starter though. Only go on the main plate if they are your second helping. That is also THE LAW. Grin

Smoked salmon yorkshire puddings

I bet see that on a sunday supplement foodie page soon. It could be A Thing.

jamdonut · 08/10/2013 21:00

I'm 49. I can't remember EVER having a Christmas dinner either at home or Grandparents' that didn't have Yorkshire puddings!

We have them with all sorts of roast's or, sometimes ,sausages. Basically anything where there is gravy involved.

fuzzpig · 08/10/2013 21:02

I would possibly cry if we had no yorkies on Xmas day!

We also have my mum's awesome onion sauce, who cares if it's not traditional with turkey, it's YUMMY and that's what counts.

fuzzpig · 08/10/2013 21:03

As an aside I had an absolutely incredible meal in a pub a little while ago, a giant flat Yorkshire 'wrap' filled with shredded roast pork and stuffing, with apple sauce for dipping, OMG.

kennyp · 08/10/2013 21:17

my daughter wants egg on toast, i will have salmon salad, my son will have pizza (under the "have whatever you want for christmas day lunch" policy we have) with maltesers for pudding. classy easy and everyone's happy.

happy holidays!!
(although now i amt thinking i would like to have yorkshire puddings with gravy for starters before my salad. scorchio!)

MrsPnut · 08/10/2013 21:21

I'm from yorkshire and I make a fantastic yorkshire pudding (picture should still be on my profile).
Yorkshire puddings here accompany every roast except christmas day and I've never thought about why I don't make them then until now.

I think it's because we always have a starter - there would be mutiny if we didn't have seafood cocktail and because the food just keeps flowing all day. I'd make them with the roast we have on new years day, and if I made a roast on the sunday in between but just not for christmas dinner.

fuzzpig · 08/10/2013 21:22

DD is already treasuring our new (as of 2012) tradition of pancakes for Xmas breakfast. So DH will make double batter and save half for yorkies with dinner.

Batterful day but hey if you can't eat what the hell you want on Xmas when can you :o

pointythings · 08/10/2013 21:26

Yorkshires go with anything. We had them with venison casserole on Sunday. DD2 would kill me if there were no Yorkshires at Christmas. Parsnips though - those we tend to miss out.

itwasarubythatshewore · 08/10/2013 21:26

Yorkshire puddings are perfectly acceptable on Christmas. I'm less certain about turkey ... Wink

ChrisTheSheep · 08/10/2013 21:26

YABVU, unless you make some for me and ship them round. My Yorkshires are a bit hit and miss...

IamNotLegend · 08/10/2013 21:28

MrsPnut send me a batch of them Yorkshire puddings!

God I could so eat a pile of them in gravy right now.

TerraNotSoFirma · 08/10/2013 21:34

Your mum is being unreasonable and should wash her mouth out with gravy.

johnworf · 08/10/2013 21:41

Have whatever you like and makes you happy. Why do you have to follow some silly protocol of what you can and can't have?

My children would happy just eat the yorkshire pudding and throw the rest of the meal away. Saying that, they'll happily put mint sauce on chicken, apple sauce on anything and have stuffing with any meat. If they eat it and enjoy it, who cares????

johnworf · 08/10/2013 21:41

FWIW I'm not arsed about turkey. Most overrated and tasteless meat ever.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 08/10/2013 21:42

Yorkshire lass and we'll have them with pretty much anything that has gravy be it roast or stew.

And any left get eaten with a dollop of jam. Waste nowt round ere tha knows Grin
