Just checked on sainsburys website. Seriously is he suggesting that buying fresh pasta is the budget option?

He is a knob.

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2013 20:43

What Skinny said.

moustachio · 07/10/2013 20:44

I used to like him. He's embarassing himself

SuburbanRhonda · 07/10/2013 20:46

Some of his recipes are lovely, but he should stop trying to pretend he cooks on a budget. The only reason that book came out is because it's the one subject he hasn't covered yet Wink

PennySillin · 07/10/2013 20:47

So buy dried and soak it for a bit longer. I love him Smile

gobbynorthernbird · 07/10/2013 20:57

Rehydrated dried pasta is not the same as fresh pasta.

PennySillin · 07/10/2013 20:58

Or make your own not that I've EVER managed to do that successfully!!!!

picnicbasketcase · 07/10/2013 20:59

Next book is cooking for millionaires. It's all edible gold leaf and platinum cocking caviar.

PoppadomPreach · 07/10/2013 21:01

Just ignore the gigantic twat. Dried is fine.

Fairylea · 07/10/2013 21:04

Tesco value spaghetti - 15p. :) bargain!

Mynameismina · 07/10/2013 21:28

Tesco value spaghetti 40p per kilo definitely wins. You can't make retolo with it though!

Been watching his 'eat like a king on a budget' program and it's shite!

He's told us to spend 9 quid on what looked like a small/medium sized organic chicken to roast. He's said that half of it will serve 4 adults (not in this house) and that the finished dinner will somehow cost a tiny amount per person Confused

Apparently there'll be enough left over from this amazing expanding chicken for a stew/curry/whatever - for 4 adults again i presume (i didn't watch till the end) as long as i have this magic stash of herbs and spices in my cupboard that doesn't appear at all in his costings per dish Hmm

Twat.

Bumpotato · 07/10/2013 21:58

Italians use dried pasta, if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2013 22:01

I lived in Italy and guess what? The supermarket is full of dried pasta.

ImperialBlether · 07/10/2013 22:04

I saw him the other day - it was ridiculous. It showed him cooking reasonably expensive food then showing a teaspoon of capers and a thing flashed up saying "7p!!" Of course it's not 7p; you have to buy the jar. He must have spent £1 on fresh basil. Yes, you can grow it yourself, but how many people do this?

Mimishimi · 07/10/2013 22:05

Fresh pasta is easy and cheap to make yourself.

nurseneedshelp · 07/10/2013 22:05

I used to like him but can't stand the prick now. ...

ClaudetteWyms · 07/10/2013 22:07

Shop-bought "fresh" pasta is pretty dire, definitely best to buy dried or make your own (which is pretty yum even if you make it v craply!). I can't believe he even recommended buying fresh pasta!

You can make it just with plain flour eggs and some oil and it would taste much better than shop-bought "fresh" for waaay less than £6.60 a kilo Shock

And what Skinny said.

LaFataTurchina · 07/10/2013 22:13

I'm Italian and only use fresh pasta for special occassions.

I don't even buy the naice Italian branded pasta in the supermarket - Supermarket (tesco, sainsburies etc.) own brand is fine!

I wouldn't buy the value range unless I had to though - I find it all sticks together oddly (maybe they use less refined flour)

OneLittleToddleTerror · 07/10/2013 22:13

fluffyraggies that's the thing, I don't believe that one chicken can last days in his family either, judging from his portion sizes in his old books.

However there are others out there who do manage less than half a chicken a meal. We are 2 adults and 1 toddler and the last time I did a chicken I think it lasted 5 days. And that was the smallest sized chicken waitrose sells. We just aren't big meat eaters.

But back to the pasta. Did he really suggest buying fresh? Hmm

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/10/2013 22:16

I got a decent pasta making thingy last Xmas. We made fresh pasta a few times. It was ok. Nothing so spectacularly better than dried stuff, considering all the effort.

Apparently Italians buy dried pasta. So that's good enough for me.

I pmsl each time that sainsbos advert comes on saying 'eat well for less' using about a tenners worth of ingredients to make a teeny tiny bacon salad. Watching that I thought the Oliver must be working for them again.

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/10/2013 22:17

Ooo ex post with lafata. Cheapo dried pasta it is then!

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/10/2013 22:19

I think he 'suggests' any foodstuffs whose manufacturers are paying him to use....

His show is so obviously all about product placement. He even put feta cheese in a curry the other week he was so desperate to wave the pack in front of the camera.

Mynameismina · 07/10/2013 22:24

Making pasta from scratch would cost £3.45 per kilo so less than fresh but still way more than dried (sorry I am a price geek).

Love making fresh pasta though.

And I can make a chicken stretch to several meals, just add loads of veg, and dried pasta Smile
