Can I ask an honest (and hopefully not rude) question? Is using 'common' to describe someone more of an English thing, when compared to the rest of Britain? I'm in Glasgow, and if someone said it here (among the people I know at least), they'd be jeered off the face of the earth, and probably castigated for being class-obsessed and snooty.

Genuinely, I am not suggesting England is 'snobbier' than Scotland, but I just never, ever hear the word up here! And when I first saw it used on MN found it a bit Dickensian! Absolutely not meant as a criticism of anyone - more a curious linguistic enquiry.

common is not a word I use in RL. - It is an undated term.

There's something lovely about a street where people sit outside the fronts of their houses and engage in conversation, or just friendly nodding. We don't talk to the people in our communities anywhere near enough these days. My dad likes to sit out and play his guitar, the neighbours often come by to listen, or sing with him. He's never lived on a council estate btw, but I imagine he'd do it there if he did, or if he lived in a big posh house.

I live in a cul de sac which is all housing association properties. When the weather is nice ALL my immediate neighbours sit out the front in deckchairs etc and drink lager. It drives me nuts but on the other hand everyone is very good natured and good hearted. If I was in trouble they would be there in a heartbeat.

The noise level irritates me at times but I just try and ignore it as much as possible.

Mogz I agree I would hate to live somewhere where people felt they had to stay in their little boxes. People sit out everywhere where I live and its great to walk home in summer and stop and chat

Gosh yes, I'd sit wherever the sun was, and have done so on many occasions. It's nothing to do with class, upbringing, council estates. I was brought up in a very posh suburb, went to prep school etc. We all sat in the front if that was where the sun was and we wanted to. Nothong wrong with it at all.

Oh, come on! My dad loves sitting on his front step in the sun, usually with a bottle of Bud in one hand and his Kindle in the other. He owns his house outright, btw, hth.

I am currently sat in my front garden having a fag, I would sit on the bench we have but rather annoyingly I have no WiFi signal if I sit there,my daughter is on her scooter in only a pair of knickers and a top, that's pretty well dressed for her and my house is an ex council house

it is too noisy though, not pleasant imo.

I live in a very quiet cul de sac and have a driveway so not right in the street but its nice, the neighbors all say hello etc, kids play out, its one of the reasons we bought this house.

My back garden backs onto a busy road, it's actually quieter on the front.

You see more of sitting on front steps on council estates than you do elsewhere, imo. That does not make it an undesirable trait though! I enjoy sitting outside the front of my 'executive detached' as the front is south facing and even at this time of year can be nice. I sat out this morning in fact and enjoyed a cuppa.

I dont mind it when you see someone just sat there having a brew or a fag and just relaxing. But my neighbour across the road lets every teenager in the area congregate in her garden and they either shout abuse at passers by or go completely silent and burst into laughter after you pass. Not nice for anyone. Had i seen that when viewing our house I wouldnt have bought it. I love bad weather. They all fuck off and take their surliness and faces like slapped arses elsewhere. The house attached to hers has been upv for sale for 8 months. I dont think her neighbour has the guts to ask them to move.

Everyone sits out the front in our street. We live on a hill overlooking the sea. We sit where the view is.

The only people who worry about what others think are insecure.

I have a table and chairs in my front yard.

I have even been known to drink wine from a box whilst sitting there.

If I'd been able to get special brew, husband would have sat drinking that for comedy value

I can assure you, it is not a council house 4 bed, sea view, very swanky estate and we are both high earning professionals. But we are most definitely common
