to return dog shit to the dogs owner

Our neighbours opposite are very nice, always pass the time of day etc.When they take their dog for a walk they dont put it on a lead (another subject) as a result the dog sometimes runs on to our drive/front garden.On a couple of occasions the dog has had a shit on our drive.The owner (to be fair) hadnt realized, so i just cleaned it up and didnt say anything.

The dog had got out the other day,our neighbour didnt know, so i took the dog back to them and politley said that he was in our garden again. Our neighbour apologized and thanked me for returning his dog.

My nephew came to stay with us yesterday and went and stepped in some dog shit that was on our drive.This was the final straw, would it ub to put their dogs shit on their drive? (I know its prob childish, but have had enough!)

If I had upset my neighbour I would like the opportunity to make amends. Just nip across, tell them you've run out of doggy bags and ask them to come and collect it themselves this time.

Boomgoestheweasel · 06/10/2013 16:17

Rosh sometimes dog owners bag it up, realise they're already carrying their own body weight in stinky dog shit, and leave it on fences/walls to collect on their way back. They inevitably forget to do so or take a different route, hence the array of poo-filled black bags in any dog-walking area.

I'm a dog owner btw. I just don't see the need for leaving poo around, anywhere.

ScarerAndFuck · 06/10/2013 16:21

If you are certain it is their dog, do as Mynewmoniker has suggested.

I'm sure they will oblige, especially if you tell them it's not the first time.

MrsCakesPremonition · 06/10/2013 18:20

I'm very glad to be poo guru - I feel it is something I've been destined to become ever since we dissolved owl poo in acid at Infant School and picked through the resulting tiny bones.

TheArticFunky · 06/10/2013 19:27

I would tell them that their dog is shitting on your land and tell them you don't want it on your driveway. Don't worry about offending them they obviously aren't too worried about offending you!

VivaLeThrustBadger · 06/10/2013 19:29

I'd ask them to pick it up, every time their dog did it.

pigsDOfly · 06/10/2013 19:58

Why is their dog running around off lead in the street? Isn't it illegal to allow your dog to run around by itself?

Hope they realize that if their dog causes a traffic accident they will be liable and could end up paying out thousands.

More to the point OP, if I were you I would just pop across the road and inform them that this has happened a few times now and that you would appreciate it if they made sure it doesn't happen again. It's disgusting that your nephew had to step in their dog's shit in your driveway because they're too lazy to make sure their dog is properly supervised.

Sorry for the rant but I got back from walking the dog today to discover that yet another irresponsible dog owner has allowed their, clearly large dog to shit next to the wall just down the road from my house and haven't bothered to pick it up. Drives me mad.

festered · 06/10/2013 21:14

Go over to their's, say Hi Mr/Mrs Dogowner, could you please stop wooftus doing his/her business on my drive?
It's been a couple of times, I've cleaned it up in the past but s/he's done it again. See what they say-and ask for the latest present to be cleaned up.
That should do it, sending it back to them could create and argument and a response of 'why didn't you just tell me?!I'd have sorted it out!?'

LimitedEditionLady · 07/10/2013 08:49

Id like to hand horse shit back to horse riders.why do they get to leave a gigantic pile of turd in the pavement?

quoteunquote · 07/10/2013 09:34

I've always had a large pack of dogs(I train) I have never left poo anywhere(my children would be the first to step in it) I despise lazy ignorant dog owners as we all get tarred with the same brush.

But giant chalk is your friend, draw a circle around the poo, and then a line with arrows leading to the owners house, they soon stop leaving dog poo. I usually add the word "shame"

We cured the local serial poo leavers, doing this after polite reminders failed to get through. It also a good warning to anyone else who might be thinking of trying it on,

You can also knock on their door and tell them if they are having difficulty locating their dogs poo to follow the line.

Mynewmoniker · 08/10/2013 17:29

quoteunquote you would be expecting the owner to be informed before the chalk attack, wouldn't you?

Isn't chalking in public graffiti? Not everyone likes graffiti. Wink

quoteunquote · 09/10/2013 23:55

It is the owner responsibility to be aware of the law, the law clearly states you are not allowed to leave dog shit on the ground in the UK,

as for chalk being graffiti, it's only there until it rains,

It is every dog owners responsibility to be in control of their animal at all times.

kb.keepbritaintidy.org/dogs/publications/guidedog.pdf

The responsibility for cleaning up dog fouling is ultimately the owner or handler of the dog. However, bodies with a duty to keep land clear of litter and refuse, or highways clean under s. 89 of the Environment Protection Act 1990, are required under the Litter (Animal Droppings) Order 1991, to keep the following types of land clear of dog faeces:

• Any public walk or pleasure ground;
• Any land laid out as a garden and used for the purpose of recreation;
• Any part of the seashore which is frequently used by large numbers of people, and managed by the person having direct control of it as a tourist resort or recreational facility;
• Any esplanade or promenade which is above the place where the tide flows;
• Any land not forming part of a highway, which is open to the air, which the public are permitted to use on foot only, and which provides access to retail premises;
• A trunk road picnic area; • A picnic site.

"Hello, do you mind if I could hava a quick word with you? Would you mind keeping closer eye on your dog as i've had to clean up poo from my drive a few times now" They should be apologetic and hopefully it wont happen again. If it does you can bring it back up and ask them to clean it! No need for all guns blazing, if it happens after you have a quiet word then fair enough, but tell them politely to start with, they are your neighbours after all

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/10/2013 10:22

Lauriefairycake If your dog shits in the woods you should still pick it up. Most children enjoy playing off the path in woods. And dog shit is far more unpleasant than deer/fox/bird shit (another poo expert)

FarOverTheRainbow · 10/10/2013 10:23

If they knew that he was shitting on your drive then YANBU but they don't know so how can they ever clean it? I'd tell them though

lainiekazan · 10/10/2013 10:29

I have a big dog who does big poos. I would never leave them lying around, and if he were off the lead I would be aware that he would be likely at some point to poo, and therefore I should be vigilant and ready with my trusty (extra-large) bags.

I went to the local rec the other day and was appalled at the number of owners who were walking ahead of their dogs who were oblivious Hmm to their dogs crouching down behind them. This is a rec used by children to play, children's football teams etc and there was a heap of poo every few yards.

I was actually thinking of calling the council to see if they can mount a surveillance operation on the rec as I really don't believe that all these owners "just didn't notice". They didn't want to notice.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 10/10/2013 10:34

It's not ok to leave dog poo next to a well used woodland path. Fine if its literally in the middle of nowhere but national trust type woods? Pick it up.

Hate irresponsible dog owners.

DidoTheDodo · 10/10/2013 10:42

MrsCakes is hedgehog poo the black sticky stuff on our lawn?

MrsCakesPremonition · 10/10/2013 11:11

It could be, especially if they've been tucking into the blackberries at the moment.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 10/10/2013 11:14

Oh yes, blackberry poos. My 10mo does those Smile.

daftgeranium · 10/10/2013 11:37

I'd put it through their letter box. They won't do it again.

Bloody irresponsible dog owners! Next door's cocker spaniel has been barking ALL MORNING and the owners seen oblivious....

SoupDragon · 10/10/2013 11:44

How do you know it was their dog this time? You can only do it if you actually see their dog in the act.

And dog shit is far more unpleasant than deer/fox/bird shit

I disagree - I thin fox shit is the rankest stuff eve. Unless you are a cocker spaniel in which case it is the best thing ever and you have to roll in it.

JoanRanger · 10/10/2013 12:41

Horse shit on the pavement = unacceptable BUT it's considerably less skanky than dogshit. It's fibrous, made from plants, breaks down very easily (you don't see mouldy horse shit). Plus you can stick it on the garden.

Justforlaughs · 10/10/2013 12:55

I wouldn't take it back to them, IF you think that they are genuinely unaware of the issue. It's not worth falling out with good neighbours over, but I WOULD tell them that it is causing you a problem and ask them to make sure it doesn't happen again. If the problem continues then yes, I would probably bag/ parcel it up and deliver it to their door or more likely smear it over their drive

donnie · 10/10/2013 13:06

I would bake the poo in some biscuits then take them over as a peace offering Grin
