Baby bottes washing

Boring, but I am in shock. The father of a 2 month old baby just told me that they just rinse his formula bottles with a bit of water and a brush, then pop them in the steriliser. Am I nuts to spend loads more time actually washing my baby's bottles with soap, rinsing about 6 times then steriliser (I know I am not nuts). Is there ANYONE on here who simply rinses baby bottles with water instead of washing them properly? Jees!

Yanbu, I have always washed in very hot soapy water and rinsed before sterilising - it's what you have to do. There are no short cuts I fear that that father is very lazy and the baby could get ill as a result Sad

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 05/10/2013 18:21

I dish wash then sterilise. The fact they are sterile in the dw is by the by. I like to do them in the baby thing.

Val007 · 05/10/2013 18:25

I think the mother is very lazy because she was in the same room when he started the subject. I guess he was fishing for my reaction to probably show the mother it's wrong but she just kept silent when I said several times that I am very shocked and that it's not right... She is a very stong willed woman and I believe the dad has to follow her instructions or else. Otherwise she is very house proud... Pity she doesn't extend this care to the most important thing in life.

I don't rinse 6 times, but certainly use hot soapy water and clean thoroughly with bottle brushes before sterilising with Milton. He sounds a bit clueless rather than lazy, does he know how minging it is doing it his way?

FTRsMammy · 05/10/2013 18:27
Shock I used to rinse with hot soapy water, then dishwasher then sterilise. A rinse is not an adequate wash
tinyturtletim · 05/10/2013 18:28

I soak in boiling water, wash rinse and sterilise.

If the bottles are clean and sterile that is all that matters, I think it is slightly neurotic to wash them 6 times.

LadyCurd · 05/10/2013 18:28

Never bothered sterilising as they didn't on NICU where my first spent a week. Hot soapy scrub rinse well and air dry is fine. As good as sterilising say the microbiologists. Sterilising is pointless as the second it is out of the steriliser it's no longer sterile. Sometimes I dishwashed them or stuck em microwave for a boil if the milk in em had gone skanky.(so sterilising in a way but not a set time or efficient process!)
Both my babies have been totally fine on this, but I'd only have gone for it as I saw how NICU did- if they don't sterilise for the most vulnerable babies then mine would be fine.
Save yourself the time!

tinyturtletim · 05/10/2013 18:29

Are they first time parents?

Did you come across quite so judgemental to their faces? As maybe they don't know how to do it and need some support.

imofftolisdoonvarna · 05/10/2013 18:29

Eww, no. I am a total a slattern, and even when ds was a bit older and I was less worried about germs etc. I always washed in hot soapy water with a bottle brush, rinsed and then sterilized.

Val007 · 05/10/2013 18:31

tiny, rinse not wash 6 times - under running water. They have seen us wash bottes very often (our baby is older) - they definitely know how to do it... :-(

You don't sound concerned.

You sound a little like you don't care for the Mum.

DontmindifIdo · 05/10/2013 18:31

Wow, nope, through the dishwasher, then pinged in the microwave steriliser, poor baby. Hmm

LadyCurd · 05/10/2013 18:32

Val007 you sound a little judgemental. Focus on what you want to do for your kids rather than worrying too much about the others.

The sterilisation aspect is less important pointless the hot soapy scrub is the important bit. It's also why they don't reccomend Milton anymore in hospitals, some parents were just soaking dirty bottles in Milton and not washing them.

tinyturtletim · 05/10/2013 18:37

I would hardly be calling them lazy. It's a bit mean if you're friends

Val007 · 05/10/2013 18:40

First time parents. Not the shrinking violet type - on the opposite. I was there, he was washing, she was sat and we were chatting. All of a sudden he approached me and said 'let me show you how we wash the bottles'... Weird. He has seen my husband a million times washing bottles (it was part of his chores) and knows the process very well as we were a bit of fanatics in that area (had - still have- over 20 glass bottles, wash daily, never reuse before wash and it is kind of a one hour spectacle when we wash our bottles...)

BrokenSunglasses · 05/10/2013 18:43

It seems a bit manky to me, not so much with bottles but the teats need to be cleaned properly. Saying that though, if the bottles are being sterilised its unlikely to do any harm. If the baby gets a tummy bug, they might rethink.

I used to scrub bottles like a woman possessed, which I now look back on and realise was serious overkill, especially considering my babies barely had bottles!

Oh so now it's my fault they don't wash their bottles. Gosh! I am posting here to find out if I am the fanatic, or if I should be worried and saying something to them (even though I am sure they would not listen). Anyway please don't shoot the messenger. Thanks. And thanks to everyone who shared their way of washing baby bottles.

You took an hour to wash bottles? Maybe they thought you were completely OTT and wanted to wind you up a bit?

bamboostalks · 05/10/2013 18:46

You're sounding a bit silly to be honest. "One hour bottle washing spectacle" etc. I mean what person invites someone to watch how they wash bottles Hmm. There's obviously something going on. You all need to find something else to talk about, keys on the bowl time perhaps?

Feminine · 05/10/2013 18:46

Wow! op they should make your bottle washing an Olympic event!

do you think he was winding you up?

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 05/10/2013 18:49

I even washed the steriliser in hot soapy water.

I used to rinse the bottle after a feed as it made them easier to wash in hot soapy water.

natwebb79 · 05/10/2013 18:51

I think they were having you on as a piss take for the mammoth bottle washing ritual you go through. Nobody says 'let me show you how I wash bottles' otherwise! Grin

neunundneunzigluftballons · 05/10/2013 19:07

They are idiots IMO. Milk is conducive to exceptionally good bacterial growth. If she is that lazy she should really have bf IMO.

Feminine · 05/10/2013 19:10

If she is that lazy she really should have bf

Oh,right...cos it is that easy? Hmm
