Baby bottes washing

Boring, but I am in shock. The father of a 2 month old baby just told me that they just rinse his formula bottles with a bit of water and a brush, then pop them in the steriliser. Am I nuts to spend loads more time actually washing my baby's bottles with soap, rinsing about 6 times then steriliser (I know I am not nuts). Is there ANYONE on here who simply rinses baby bottles with water instead of washing them properly? Jees!

neun how do you know she is able to breastfeed? ???

I am wondering if your friend was having a mickey take out of you actually.

An hour washing bottles? You have more time than I do....

Val007 · 05/10/2013 19:14

I wish they were taking the piss. I hope so. I did pay attention to what he did after he told me - within seconds the bottles were in the steriliser container and he turned it on. Then proceeded with another batch. I didn't invite anyone to watch us wash bottles - we wash them every day regardless of who is there. Those who mock me - how do YOU wash your bottles? I have no interest in critisising anyone - on the opposite - I am being sarcastic in regards to our own obsession about bottle washing. But the case I described above truly shocked me and I just wanted to double-check what this was about...

I washed in soapy water, rinsed and sterilised - only had 8 bottles (why you had 20 is beyond me!!), stopped sterilising after about 5 months as no longer thought it necessary. You are being a bit fanatical tbh, but hey-ho - each to their own!

mummytowillow · 05/10/2013 19:16

My lazy brother and his wife did this. I watched him run the teat under the tap and stick it in their minging steriliser.

I sat for them and a bottle had grime all round the rim. Bleurghhhhh!

I scrubbed them all and sterilised them again Wink

Val007 · 05/10/2013 19:17

An hour with coffee break, waiting for full kettle to boil several times etc, not rushing like crazy. Maybe it'not 60 min but not less than 30 mins. Which is still olympic snail speed compared to his 30 seconds and bam...

Washed thoroughly with bottle brush.

Rinsed.

bunged in the sterilizer.

Feminine · 05/10/2013 19:19

but what is the point of the boiling water plus sterilizer?

Congratulations on having nothing serious in your life to worry about.

If you were that concerned about the child why didn't you just say that you think they really need to wash in soapy water then sterilise? instead of bitching on here

GreatSoprendo · 05/10/2013 19:24

Glad you said that feminine - I was beginning to worry about my not having used boiling water or spent an hour on it......

owlface · 05/10/2013 19:26

If she is that lazy she really should have bf
Oh yes, the lazy way to feed a baby!

Val007 · 05/10/2013 19:27

I had plenty of glass bottles because I expressed breast milk and froze in the bottle, ready to defrost in fridge, heat in warm water and feed baby without having to transfer the milk during this process. Therefore I needed many. Then started buyng jars when bottles were not enough. Hence I now remember there were also two sets of double pump tubes, pump bottles, caps, bottle stands etc etc all fanatically gathered thoughout the day and washed at the same time as the bottles. I am telling you - it was a one hour job!

I think the mother is very lazy because she was in the same

I have no interest in critisising anyone - on the opposite

Ermmm.... calling your friend lazy is critism at the highest form.

Wuxiapian · 05/10/2013 19:33

YABU.

You have you way, they have theirs.

Calling them lazy isn't particularly pleasant.

Val007 · 05/10/2013 19:34

For the record I am not bitching. I can't impose anything on them. I kept saying I am utterly shocked and this is wrong. I am sure they know that dishes are washed with soap. I have seen them do it. I am considering having a chat with her about this. I am very sceptical she will take it on board and not wanting to make her feel critisised but you are right - baby's health is a priority.

Out of context!!!

It was a reply to a poster saying the dad is lazy.

Anyway, nothing to do with the subject.

If she is not lazy , for sure what she is (not) doing is lazy. I am not even comparing like with like here. Anyway, the angry logic bitching critising police - it is not about me - I am fine, thank you, and my baby is very well looked after.

You can't call your friend lazy! It is mean. Especially over bottle washing.

Unless there are other concerns about the baby then I would just leave it to be honest. You will make her feel awful.

Xmasbaby11 · 05/10/2013 19:58

YANBU. I'd agree they are lazy. That isn't sufficient washing. I think you are slightly OTT with the rinsing, but it's very lax that they are aren't washing properly with a bottle brush. Naturally there will be many people whose babies have been fine with less attention, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

If you are just washing bottles and no other paraphernalia, it doesn't even take 10mins (to do 6), in my experience, so it's pretty lazy to take a short cut. Having said that, I wouldn't be utterly shocked at a friend not doing it to the letter - I would probably bring it up what the recommendations are, though

Icelollycraving · 05/10/2013 20:08

I rinsed, popped them in dishwasher & sterilised. You have your way, they have theirs which is grim & incorrect.
You are sounding a bit catty though. Saucer of milk? :o

ANormalOne · 05/10/2013 20:09

For the record I am not bitching.

Yes you are.

Cityofgold · 05/10/2013 20:48

You are being a complete fanatic. They are sterilising the bottles which is more than adequate and as someone above said a wash in hot water will do without a sterilisation afterwards. Guidelines are issued to apply to the lowest common denominator which in this instance appears to be you.
