I currently work in a hospitality role. My job duties include

• recruiting new staff
• adding up all the wages

• paying the PAYE each month on my boss´s behalf (if I did not do it she would "forget" to pay)

- writing out manuals for each section in the restaurant - processing all invoices - ensuring business rates, utilities etc are set up and paid - marketing (facebook, twitter etc) - dealing with customer complaints - ensuring that my boss pays parking fines etc

• stock sheets
• ordering

- invoicing larger clients and liasing with them about their orders, including doing consultations

• dealing with any staff grievances (this is an almost daily occurrence)
• answering the phone

up til now this all had to be done whilst also waitressing, sometimes being in the cafe alone except for the chef, and also sending out deliveries ith drivers to a 10 mile radius. Apparently as of next week I will have an office role....but this involves an extra 15 miles of travel per day.

My boss´s temper is very quick, I am called on my days off, at night time (sometimes as late as 1am) weekends, I am often sworn at, called names or blamed for things that I could not possibly have avoided (ie.....things which are as a result of incidents before I was employed by the company)

I make 10,500 pounds per year and work 31 hours per week.

I´m a single mother (father totally absent, does not contribute at all)

I´m at the end of my tether.

WIBU to give 2 weeks notice and temp? is it realistic to expect to get 20 - 25 hours work per week (mon- fri) consistently? I live in a major city.

Not going to name and shame, and just feel so exhausted with it all that I just want to move on and try and find something else and cut all ties.

As you live in a big city, I reckon temp agencies will bite your hand off. I used to do a job like yours - it prepares you very well for a number of roles. When you've calmed down a bit, go through all the skills you have and divide them into sections. You've got customer-facing, customer service, sales and human interactions skills. You're a bookkeeper, accounts manager and business manager. You have staff management skills. You're a communications manager, including hands-on social networking skills. I bet you've also been doing purchasing, supply management and logistics. Sort this lot out, identify relevant areas and launch separate job searches, with specialised CVs. Which areas do you actually want to work in? Where's your heart?

I know your ex-boss's behaviour is pretty much par for catering, but that doesn't make it legal. Have a look at your contents insurance, credit card agreements, and banking benefits if you have a fee-paying account. Chances are they all offer a free legal advice service. Ring up as many as you're entitled to, and find out whether you can do her for unfair dismissal.

She'll ring you up and ask you back, won't she? It might not be a bad idea to stall her for a few days while you get your head together.

I'm sorry you've been fired but I think you would do better than that through an agency. For the hours and level of responsibility you had, it's a poor wage.

Go for it, now I've seen your update it might be a great solution. Temping can be good money but you do need to keep your phone on and be available, I know a few down my way who temp for a living and they can work as and when they like, they love it.

Please do consider going to CAB and seeing if you can take her to tribunal, she sounds like a nasty piece of shit.

UPDATE - thanks everyone for your replies...It all came to a head with a phone call in which I received a tirade of abuse, and she sacked me (she does this...and then calls back an hour later saying "come back, I´m sorry")

This time I said I would not come back. I registered with a temping agency, and have a new job until March 2014 starting next friday, for a better hourly rate and sane working conditions :)

:) I feel so relieved that I do not have to go back and deal with all of that from her or her father again. It was so intimidating.

Your boss sounds like an utter twat pancake. Hope your new job works out well. I just wish you would name and shame so this awful person is less likely to get away with this horrible behavior.

Temping is pretty good actually - if you have to work late you get paid more - whooppee!

at the very very least you are presumably owed notice pay, plus any holiday pay for time you have not yet taken, so it would be worth talking to someone about this.

CAB, or ACAS, or any legal cover you have through insurance as someone posted before.

OP you said sane working conditions, I believe you probably meant sane and no it wasn't a type

try to get a permanent contract though.
