To ask if anybody here has had hand foot and mouth?

After dropping my extremely reluctant son off at nursery this morning, the staff notified the parents that and foot and mouth is doing the rounds.

I just know DS will get it as he has only just shook off pneumonia and it is certain he will bring it home to gift it lovingly to DH and I!

Has anybody had it as an adult or had DC that have had it? what is is like?

Its not as bad as it sounds. ;)

it went round the pre-school last year. In our case (pre-school) it was just a weird rash around the mouth and I think hands?

My dd didn't catch it, so I can't be sure.

MyNameIsAnAnagram · 01/10/2013 11:21

Ds had it and it wasn't too bad, but he gave it to dh who was quite poorly.

plum100 · 01/10/2013 11:23

my dd had it at school - which she passed onto her one year old sister - both had very sore mouths which made it difficult to eat - and I temperature - other than that they were ok. But DH got it and he was really poorly with it - very sore mouth and just wiped him out. was in bed for 3 days and he is never like that,.

CecilyP · 01/10/2013 11:24

DS had it when he was one or 2. It just involves tiny blisters on the hands and feet and in the mouth. He wasn't too poorly.

Just to add it is absolutely nothing to do with the far more serious foot and mouth disease in cattle.

fluffyraggies · 01/10/2013 11:26

DD had it in yr4 or 5. Generally felt unwell, itchy rash on one arm. GP only mildly interested ... advised to give DD 3 days off school and go back if she felt better. It went. She was fine after day 2. No special meds :)

heymammy · 01/10/2013 11:29

Dd1 had it a couple of years ago. She was barely affected by the tbh. A weird dotty rash on her hands and feet but nothing really around/in her mouth. I know some kids can get sore blisters in their mouths but no sign of that here.

Only thing is, your ds's immune system will prob be low after having pneumonia so would def keep an eye on him.

SeraphinaSparklePants · 01/10/2013 11:30

I had it as a teenager (years ago) and from what I can remember, I had a rash in the obvious places alongside a sore throat. Not too bad, but felt a bit poorly for a few days and wasn't allowed to go to work as I work in a medical setting.
The mad cow jokes wore thin after a while ha.
Hope your DS doesn't catch it.

LimburgseVlaai · 01/10/2013 11:31

DD had it when she was about 5. She was unwell for one night and then the day after the spots started appearing.

It looks a bit like chicken pox but only on the hands and feet, around the mouth, and sometimes also around the vulva. It itches like mad - we used calamine lotion. Apart from the itching she was fine though.

OwlMother · 01/10/2013 11:32

Ds 1 had it when he was about 4. He got it after he'd had scarlet fever and chicken pox, one after the other! He seemed pretty much fine, ulcers in his mouth and blisters between his toes. That was how we spotted it- he was walking strangely. Other than that he seemed ok. Might have just seemed ok compared to the previous illness though. That was a very long month!! Dd (3months at the time) caught none of the above, despite us all being cooped up inside for weeks!

Rosduk · 01/10/2013 11:32

GP said to me the older you are the worse it is although it is rare for adults to get it. I had it last year from DD and she barely noticed she had it, I however had blisters all over my hands that made my hands feel like they were on fire and mouth ulcers all over the inside of my mouth. It would normally been controlled with antihistamine and pain killers but I was 8 weeks preggo so had to put up with the pain! Horrendous! But it is rare in adults as most already have immunity from chicken pox....

MrsMangoBiscuit · 01/10/2013 11:34

DD1 had it and was barely even ill with it. She passed it to me and made me really ill. Cough to chest infection to pneumonia, weeks off work, narrowly avoided going to hospital. I'm asthmatic though, which didn't help.

SanityClause · 01/10/2013 11:37

My secretary's DD has it, ATM. She rang this morning, and described the symptoms. I said I thought it was that (my vast experience of it is that DD1 had it about 13 years ago!).

Anyway, she rang the nursery, and they said it is going around.

There is a sort of blistery rash on hands and feet, and in the mouth. DD1 didn't want to eat, as it hurt, but it should clear up quite quickly on its own.

Boobybeau · 01/10/2013 11:42

My ds had it when he was about 2ish. It was just a rash with cold like symptoms but the rest of us all managed to not get it

LtEveDallas · 01/10/2013 11:44

I've had it twice, once as a 13/14 year old which was horrendous. My mouth and throat were full of ulcers/blisters. My lips were covered in cold sores and swollen. I didn't really eat for 2 weeks - just clear soups and then milkshakes/Build-Up when I could face it. I also had some blisters around my ears which scarred. I remember the docs being worried about my eyes (but I was fine) and being really hot and feverish.

I got it again when I was 22/23. This time I had spots all over my face, which appeared quite suddenly when I was at work (scared people!) and some in the crook of my elbows and knees. They didn't itch or anything, but looked horrible, like puss filled teenage spots. I had to take a week off work because they thought I was contagious, but I didn't actually feel that ill, just kinds tired and listless.

I think the 'real' name for it is cocksackie.

Looks like I will have to send DH to stay with his mother for a week or so then if DS gets it! His immune system is crap from glandular fever as a teen, and I don't want to listen to him rolling around moaning while me and DS struggle through with the same thing.

If he's had it before the should be ok, trouble is often people have no idea if they've had it or not as its usually so mild in children it can go unnoticed.

Bunraku · 01/10/2013 12:29

None of us have ever had it and DS and I haven't had chickenpox so I'm crossing everything :)

Teapigging · 01/10/2013 12:33

It did the rounds of the village here a month ago, and although one little girl at my toddler's nursery got it badly, DS didn't catch it. The worst element of it for this child was very, very bad mouth ulcers all over the inside of her mouth, which made eating painful. I think she more or less lived on icecream and yoghurt until they went away, and lost quite a bit of weight.

Lambsie · 01/10/2013 12:33

Ds had it last year and I only realised he had had it (and it wasn't just cold sores) when I got it. We both had it mildly and ds didn't appear to have any itching. I had itchy hands and little blisters on the roof of my mouth. Dh didn't catch it.

mummytime · 01/10/2013 13:01

DS has had it twice. The first time I also got it, and it wasn't that bad. We both had it pretty mildly, so none of the blister's got infected.

The worst thing was the blisters on the hands. If you've ever been on a long walk, think D of E type, and got blisters; well the ones on the hands felt like that but because they were on the hands they I was less used to them and they kept getting touched. But otherwise it wasn't an issue.

When DS got it the second time his little sister's who'd never had it, didn't catch it.

Fakebook · 01/10/2013 13:05

Dd had it when she was nearly 1. Her tongue had a bluish/red sore on it and her right foot was a bit red (doctor saw it, personally I couldn't tell). She had a slight fever and recovered really quickly. I only took her to the doctor because I got scared when I saw her tongue.

Bloob · 01/10/2013 13:10

It's very unusual to get it if you're a healthy adult.

My ds has it right now! It's ok.. He's grumpy and irritable, I think it's uncomfy and keeping him awake as he's not napping or sleeping very well. But other than that he's pretty much ok. He has a few spots on hands and feet and a lot on his bum, a couple in his mouth. No temp, no coldy symptoms, still has TONNES of energy! Grin

It is nowhere near the hell that was chicken pox. Or strep throat. This is fairly mild! He is 15 months btw.
