To ask if anybody here has had hand foot and mouth?

After dropping my extremely reluctant son off at nursery this morning, the staff notified the parents that and foot and mouth is doing the rounds.

I just know DS will get it as he has only just shook off pneumonia and it is certain he will bring it home to gift it lovingly to DH and I!

Has anybody had it as an adult or had DC that have had it? what is is like?

We all had it over the summer. DS2 got a fever and spots on his face and I got a spot on my foot and a nasty flu like illness. DH and DS1 had it very mildly. Nasty virus.

elvisola · 01/10/2013 13:28

DD2 had it a couple of years ago, although she had lots of blisters in her mouth and found it hard to eat it wasn't too bad.

Then I caught it. It was honestly the most ill I have ever felt in my life. Wiped me out for 2 weeks.

lionheart · 01/10/2013 13:34

Both DCs have had it. Six year old had his mouth and tongue totally ulcerated, couldn't talk, or eat for days. Sipping water, taking painkillers was agony. He still remembers the first food he was able to eat at the end of it. Second DC had it but without all of this.

I don't think it is an illness to be dismissed and something and nothing since for some, it can be just awful.

My nephew had it and was absolutely fine. He passed it onto me (I've normally got quite a decent immune system!) And I felt rotten - tired and high temperature. The blisters on my hands and feet were really tingly and it was quite painful to walk for a few days.

Tailtwister · 01/10/2013 13:38

Yes, I've had it. I had some flu type symptoms (very sore throat, temp, generally feeling grotty) and some little red bumpy blister on my hands and feet. DS1 was similar and very grouchy. It was unpleasant, but not intolerable.

ilovepicnmix · 01/10/2013 13:40

My DS had it recently and he was pretty much fine aside from spotty. I got it from him and had terrible mouth ulcers.

Purplehonesty · 01/10/2013 13:43

Ds is 4, he got it from nursery and had a few spots on his hands and feet that went within a day or so.
He kindly passed it to dd who is 15mo and she was really poorly. Sick, really high temp, blisters in her mouth and she has hardly eaten for two weeks.
Poor baby. Neither dh or I caught it.
Lots of friends children here have had it and its all been very mild so lets hope you are one of the lucky ones.

melliebobs · 01/10/2013 13:44

Dd had her second bout in July and I kindly got it again. Second time round was horrific. Fever which was like flu for 2-3 days. And the spots. Argh. At first they were more like pimply bites but they developed more into blisters and felt like stabbing pins n needles if I knocked them (feet are still recovering now). I had them in my eyelids, under my finger nails, roof of my mouth, on the soles of my feet and my fingers. The pain was horrendous and i barely ate for a week cos of the ones in my mouth.

Dredding dd ever getting it again Confused

melliebobs · 01/10/2013 13:44

Dd by the way was covered in spots and was just generally under the weather. She got of lightly!

EggyChick · 01/10/2013 14:01

I have had it, just a year ago. Horrendous blisters around and inside mouth, swollen lips ala Angelina Jolie, hands and feet covered in blisters as were my shoulders and all down my arms. I sat and watched them pop up.

Never, ever want it again. It is very unpleasant to get as an adult.

p.s. I was in Singapore when I contracted it.

goldenlula · 01/10/2013 14:11

Ds' both had it 2 years ago when it was rife in our area. It was small blisters on their hands and feet (including ankle areas) and ulcers in their mouths. It was uncomfortable for them, especially the ulcers in the mouth but other than that they were fine. Dh and I didn't get it and nor did dd, who was 4ish months at the time.

Bunraku · 02/10/2013 09:00

Well fingers crossed he doesn't appear to be coming down with anything yet. He's almost always ill on a Wednesday after being at nursery on a Tuesday and misses most Thursdays. Rinse repeat. We did get a letter at home time coupled with one of those delightful "somebody has lice" forms.

I caught it. I was the 2-3's supervisor in the nursery but I'd gone into the baby room to help out with a baby who wouldn't stop screaming. He had really bad blisters on his hands and feet and his mouth but mum said it was teething. Then 2 days later I came out with blisters. Never thought about it but showed another nursery nurse, who said I'd better see the GP. I felt fine. GP said it looked like I had HFM and to stay off the rest of the week. He said "You may not feel them yet, but your mouth shows signs of them starting!" By the time I got home my mouth was agony. I felt ok but there was one blister on my pinkie which I kept knocking on the door and it was painful. Was off Mon-Fri back on the following Monday.

BarbiesBeaver · 02/10/2013 10:16

My daughter had it when she was nearly one - awful flu like symptoms, crying all day the whole weekend, unable to eat or sleep, dreadful raw nappy rash, lots of large blisters around mouth, nappy, hands and feet.

My husband had the fever and sore mouth and I got the flu like symptoms and loads of blisters on hands, legs and feet. Couldn't do up any buttons or zips for a couple of days and couldn't bear to put my hands in warm water of under the duvet. Very unpleasant and took a while to get over it. Wasn't recognised by some of the medical professionals at A and E either!

keelyboo · 02/10/2013 10:29

ds had it at 9 months he was very ill, im not even sure where he picked it up from as his sisters didn't have it and he wasn't at nursery.

He escaped hospital admission by the skin of his non existant teeth but that's quite rare from what I was told, so try not to worry. I had it as an adult and it wasn't too bad bit sore in my mouth, it varies from person to person ds was just unlucky.

bugsyburge · 03/10/2013 13:37

my niece gave it to my SIL & my DH and they were really poorly. my DH had blisters all down the back of his throat and all over his body, including the soles of his feet.... he also looked like something from the film 28 days later.... not pretty!!!!

my niece on the other hand just Haas a little rash.... I think it affects adults much more seriously than children
