to be able to tolerate incorrect usage of "...and me"...

someonestolemynick · 01/10/2013 00:25

...but to want to gauge my eyes out when people use "...and I" in the wrong place.

It's easy:

Say: "and I" when you would use "I".

I am going to the shop.

You and I are going to the shop.

Say: "and me" when you would use "me" in a sentence.

This is for me.

This is for you and me.

You wouldn't say: "This is for I", so what makes you think a second person makes a difference?

Feeling better already wearing my smug face.

Don't you mean unable to tolerate? Wink

someonestolemynick · 01/10/2013 00:32

No, I don't mind and incorrect "...and me".

I think people who use "and I" when it should be "and me" get to me, because I think they're over-eagerly trying to avoid mistakes. Possibly even for reasons of un-warranted snobbishness.

Argh!

OP posts:
LemonLies · 01/10/2013 00:33

I find that irritating too.

juneybean · 01/10/2013 00:34

I think OP is saying they can tolerate and me being used correctly but and I boils her piss.

juneybean · 01/10/2013 00:34

Bah incorrectly.

BigBirthdayGloom · 01/10/2013 00:38

Oh yanbu-dh and I roll eyes at each other frequently when someone does this on the telly. Kirstie and Phil are big offenders. Surely someone edits their scripts?

TheOpposibleThumb · 01/10/2013 00:49

Do you mean gouge your eyes out? Gauge is a different word.

IneedAsockamnesty · 01/10/2013 00:53

I think you need a nice lay down in a dark room and a hobby.

someonestolemynick · 01/10/2013 00:54

opposiblethumb well done, you found my token spelling mistake, to show I'm only human Grin

OP posts:
someonestolemynick · 01/10/2013 00:57

lemonlies and birthday: yay, i might be unreasonable but at least i'm not alone

juney precisely

sockreturningpixie this would most definitely help

OP posts:
firawla · 01/10/2013 01:10

no op yanbu I feel the same.
It comes across like people using "I" in that way is because they think saying me is incorrect or bad grammar in any context

BOF · 01/10/2013 01:16

And myself is even worse.

BOF · 01/10/2013 01:20

Oh, and it's gouge, not gauge Grin

someonestolemynick · 01/10/2013 01:57

BOF sorry, but opposiblethumb claims that prize.

Agree with you on "myself"

OP posts:
TroublesomeEx · 01/10/2013 06:04

I agree.

It's because people who incorrectly use "...and me" don't realise they're saying it incorrectly, whereas people who incorrectly use "...and I" think they're speaking correctly and have made an effort to do so!

It's on a par with holding your knife like a pen...

PresidentServalan · 01/10/2013 08:45

Incorrect use of subject and object makes me stabby. They are always doing it on masterchef and it makes me shout at the telly. Blush

PresidentServalan · 01/10/2013 08:46

And don't get me started on holding knife like pen! Angry

Tanith · 01/10/2013 08:49

My pretentious ex-boyfriend used to misuse "myself". He had management aspirations and finished with me because I wouldn't make a good manager's wife.

He was right Grin

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 01/10/2013 09:09

I generally hate these threads but I am entirely with you.

Some pretentious arse (note, pretentious arses everywhere, this is not how you get your girlfriends' mates on your side) corrected my 'and me' to 'and I' the other day. Hmm

AND HE WAS WRONG DAMMIT.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/10/2013 09:29

I always think people who do this have Hyacinth tendencies.

TroublesomeEx · 01/10/2013 10:56

Yes, that's it Chaos. It's the Hyacinth tendencies.

I read a fantastic online dating profile the other day where the man prided himself on his education and intelligence. His sentences were verbose, poorly constructed and largely meaningless as a result.

And then he misquoted Oscar Wild [sic]

What an arse!

HisLommel · 01/10/2013 11:01

Totally agree, YANBU. And don't even get me started on "hence why..."

lifesgreatquestions · 01/10/2013 11:04

It only ever grates when someone I don't really like says it. A guy at work was on the phone to reception asking if his appointment had arrived, "Has x arrived for my colleague or I". It jarred, but only because I don't like him and I revelled a bit in his public mistake!

CecilyP · 01/10/2013 11:29

Oh yanbu-dh and I roll eyes at each other frequently when someone does this on the telly. Kirstie and Phil are big offenders. Surely someone edits their scripts?

Yes, those 2 are big offenders. Doesn't exactly make me want to gouge my eyes out, but I can't help thinking that all that money on private education was wasted on that pair.

justmatureenough2bdad · 01/10/2013 11:40

and me/and I i can cope with

it's the myself/yourself that really really winds me up.
