To NOT report this car? (Warning parking thread)

Kasterborous · 29/09/2013 08:39

There is a car parked on our road that has not moved for months. It's not causing any obstruction. It's tax disc is 4 months out of date and it's got very flat tires. Some of my friends say I should 'report' it. I don't intend to, for one thing we live in forces housing and for all I know it's owner could be in Afghanistan or elsewhere abroad, I think it would be mean to report it.

You know what you want to do. Why post about it?

Tee2072 I posted because I've had a few people say to me I should report it and I was a bit doubtful. despite saying and thinking I won't.

Yes you should report it.
I lost my licence for a year and SORN my car.
It's the law.

SunCream32 · 29/09/2013 09:19

I agree it should be reported. I had to do the same once, when a vehicle was parked inconveniently near our house and had no tax. After waiting a couple of weeks, I checked with immediate neighbours that the vehicle didn't belong to them or their offspring. They thought it was my DP's! I reported it and within a day it appeared that the actual owner reclaimed it, re-taxed it and we still see it, but at least it's legal now!!

Rooners · 29/09/2013 09:23

Is there anyone you could ask without reporting it as such?

Anyone who might know how to contact the owner?

maddening · 29/09/2013 09:27

can you ask the forces if they know if it belongs to one of their people - as you are worried they could be fined due to the tax disc?

Trills · 29/09/2013 09:29

Meh.

If it's not causing any trouble then I probably wouldn't bother doing anything about it.

If anyone feels that it is causing trouble or taking up a needed space or making the road look bad then they will report it.

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/09/2013 09:32

If its not parked in a way that obstructs anyone or anything then I wouldn't bother

SparkyTGD · 29/09/2013 09:35

I wouldn't bother either tbh, if its not obstructing anything or not causing a danger of any kind.

Agree with Trills, if someone else is bothered, they can report it.

geminigirl · 29/09/2013 09:35

If you don't want to report it, tell your friends who are so offended by it to report it themselves.

HarderToKidnap · 29/09/2013 09:40

Might have been nicked and abandoned. I'd report it in case there is an owner out there who wants to be reunited With it!

greenfolder · 29/09/2013 09:44

yes, it may well be stolen. my friend who is severly disabled had her car stolen from tesco (complete with disabled badge- there really are some scum). it was an old car - too hard to steal newer ones. she was without transport for months whilst trying to get some money to replace it. just after she replaced it, the old one was found- it had been abandoned on an estate but nobody reported it for months, assuming it belonged to someone.

CeliaLytton · 29/09/2013 09:56

Good point about it being stolen and abandoned! Ask around and then report it.

MrsBW · 29/09/2013 10:05

Doubt it's someone that's gone on tour.... They're generally told to think about that sort of stuff before they go.

Report it.... As someone says, it may have an owner somewhere who would be glad to have it back.

monicalewinski · 29/09/2013 10:41

You can go to the guardroom and give them the number - if it belongs to someone from camp it will have had a car pass at some point and been registered.

Meerkatwhiskers · 29/09/2013 10:56

I would report it. Our force has a thing called operation crackdown where you can abandoned cars online. Think others use it too.

WMittens · 29/09/2013 11:41

if it belonged to someone it should have been declared SORN if they were going to be away for a lengthy time

It can't be SORNed if it's parked on the road (or rather, it can't be parked on the road if it's SORNed) - if the owner doesn't have a drive it would (legally) have to remain taxed and insured.

Kasterborous · 29/09/2013 12:38

Ok I think I will ask around. I don't think it's been stolen because we have seen it driven and parked in various places along the street while we have lived here. Hard to know which house it belongs to because it's a case of park where there is a space rather than right next to your house. It's not causing any obstruction.

OP posts:
ScarerAndFuck · 29/09/2013 12:50

Why should you report it if it's not bothering you? Or anybody else on the street (who could report it just as easily if it were bothering them). Why do your friends want you to report it? How do they know about it and why is it bothering them?

Can you not just ask around and find out who it belongs to. I've lived on married quarters, there's always someone who knows something about everyone.

Otherwise you could always ask at your housing office, although again, if yours is like ours was, they will already be well aware of the car and why it is there.

KatyPutTheCuttleOn · 29/09/2013 13:08

They don't need to declare SORN if it is taxed though, do they?

StillaNortherner · 29/09/2013 13:09

If there's a possibility that it belongs to someone on tour then is there a possibility of them coming home soon. DH reg should all be back in October and I'm looking after his and his friends cars. Don't know what you're actually supposed to do with the cars before tour but his mate had someone else looking after if for first half and DH was supposed to be looking after it for second half but got sent out aswell. As far as I'm aware he didn't get told anything about what to do with his car. In fact we didn't really get much info but that's a whole other topic.

TidyDancer · 29/09/2013 13:13

I would report it. It's a math to believe that reporting it will automatically lead to the car being taken away.

If you do it, you need to ring the local council and give them the details. They will probably put a notice on the car asking the owner to come forward. If they don't make contact, the council will ask the dvla for their details and write to them.

Only if it can be established that there is a no legal owner will the council do anything.

The dvla may have other powers though.

TidyDancer · 29/09/2013 13:13

It's a myth

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 29/09/2013 13:24

If the tax has run out and it hasn't been declared SORN then yes it is parked illegally. It may well be stolen so I would report it, like others have already said, in case someone wants it back.
