To have given DS (2) a bit of a crap tea?

Massively busy day at work today, stock take plus loads of customers. I got home and DP had to go to work. DP says DS has eaten well during the day so I gave him a slice of malt loaf, apple and banana for his tea.

I now feel guilty it wasn't a proper cooked meal. I had planned fish, new potatoes and veg. I just know though if I'd have gone to the effort to cook it he probably wouldn't have eaten it as he never eats that well at dinner and he had eaten well in the day.

Quick! Someone call Social Services! Wink

FlobberWobber · 28/09/2013 21:15

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it, it sounds okay, it's not like you fed him a greasy sausage roll and can of diet coke!

FrogsGoWhat · 28/09/2013 21:17

Well I'm feeling I'll and knackered and very pregnant so DD 2yo had a wrap with cream cheese, boiled egg and sweet corn. So did I.

As long as the diet is balanced out over a few days, I can't see anything wrong with what either your child or mine ate.

catgirl1976 · 28/09/2013 21:17

That's fine

Mine (similar age) seems to live off fresh air some days and refuses to eat the lovely home cooked food I give him and it ends up in the bin

I am just grateful when he does eat. If he ate what yours just did I'd be fine about it

hettienne · 28/09/2013 21:17

No, that's never acceptable :( You are also never allowed to put the TV on because you are tired or give them biscuits to keep them quiet. Or let them play on your phone in restaurants. Or eat takeaways.

BadSeedsAddict · 28/09/2013 21:18

Sounds fine and had vitamins. Might be a bit 'loose' tomorrow though. Mine have had worse teas Grin

Tryharder · 28/09/2013 21:18

My kids had a bacon sandwich for their tea followed by a chocolate cookie.

And Fish and chips and Froot Shoot for lunch

5 a day?

Orangeanddemons · 28/09/2013 21:19

Dd had a Milky Bar yoghurt and two plums. At least she had one of her 5.....

jellyfl00d · 28/09/2013 21:19

You did the right thing, I've done this before. If you know it's been good eating earlier then it's ok to have a snacky tea. It's taken the pressure off both of you, and you can use the meal you planned for tomorrow maybe

Donkeyok · 28/09/2013 21:19

My ds loves Malt loaf. He would have loved that tea. Why is it we feel guilty if we are not giving a hot meal meat/fish and 2 veg etc .
They probably had hot school dinner.
How old is ds, maybe get could get his own meal like this once a week. I've started doing this with my ds 8 and dd 11 is cooking once a week. Take the pressure of a busy mum.
You're not really going to beat yourself up about this are you. Malt loaf is only 50p at Coop at the moment.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/09/2013 21:21

If this is serious, this really really doesn't matter.
What do you think will happen to someone who, once, doesn't have a hot dinner?

ClaireandGeorge · 28/09/2013 21:21

OK so I don't need to worry about losing my mother of the year title then? Wink

I failed to mention I had a packet of monster munch and four heroes for my tea after he'd gone to bed. We do usually eat dinner as a family, honestly.

Ds had CAKE (ok, cakes) for lunch Blush in my defence we were at a charidee coffee morning Smile

DontPanicMrMannering · 28/09/2013 21:22

Snack teas allow this house to function some most days.

hettienne · 28/09/2013 21:23

We did the same Shakey Grin

Madmartigan · 28/09/2013 21:25

AND better than you flying off the handle because you're all overtired and you're trying to hard to be the perffect mum. That is practically de rigeur in our house. I would be a better mum if he had malt loaf and an early night more often.

ClaireandGeorge · 28/09/2013 21:26

Donkeyok he's 2 so probably would be capable of scavenging his own dinner from the fridge/cupboard although lord knows what it would be. Probably cheese he often rescues that from the fridge and brings it to me.

Yes serious arethereanyleftatall. I do worry about DS getting a balanced diet, feeding toddlers is hard work. He went through a stage recently after a weekend at his Nans of saying no cake every time I offered him dinner,

I told DD2 whose 5 that cereal wasn't a proper tea and promptly bought pakoras and chicken tikka pieces for tea.

She eats really well and reasonably healthy 90% of the time, she did eat all the salad that came with the chicken tikka so thats not too bad is it.

Teeb · 28/09/2013 21:30

This is going to be the first lazy dinner of many if he's only two.

Don't sweat it.

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 28/09/2013 21:34

Don't beat yourself up. I regularly give my two scrambled eggs and toast or French toast for tea with some fruit if we've been rushing about or I'm too knackered to cook from scratch. I console myself with the thought that it's wholemeal bread and free range eggs !

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 28/09/2013 21:36

Sounds delicious to me. Next time you're serving that, please invite me. Although I'd like two slices of malt loaf, please.

Sometimes we're just too busy, or nobody is in the mood to cook here. Plenty of snacky meals, we all seem to thrive on it. Salad and fruit, can't go wrong with those.

nickelbabe · 28/09/2013 21:36

dd had muesli for tea. her choice.
and it's balanced Grin

FlobberWobber · 28/09/2013 21:39

What's wrong with scrambled eggs on toast? I cook all me and DH's meals from scratch, I used to make the DC eat what we ate but they were miserable (my cooking not that bad btw!) so I now give them pasta with cheese, veggie sticks, scrambled eggs, pizza, sausages & mash, noodles with chicken. Is that bad?!

LimitedEditionLady · 28/09/2013 23:12

Would it have made you feel better if you had heated the fruit up?
My ds had fruit loaf toast and a banana and a yoghurt,i thought that was fine, thats what ds wanted.
