A " chav themed" fancy dress party?

Well, no school should, obviously. But a selective school with an overwhelmingly middle class demographic particularly so, surely????

if it was the kids idea then wtf are they being taught? At the school and by parents?

ouryve · 28/09/2013 16:00

Good grief, no.

curlew · 28/09/2013 16:15

"if it was the kids idea then wtf are they being taught? At the school and by parents?"

They have been taught the main lesson the 11+ teaches. That passing makes you better than the people who fail. Sadly.

This is awful. Truly terrible.

If I ever needed any more proof that selective education is just wrong......

Tikkamasala · 28/09/2013 17:21

The chav party is awful but I think comments like the 11+ teaches you you're better than everyone else and this is why selective schools are wrong are way OTT!

AKAK81 · 28/09/2013 17:42

YABVU its only a bit of fun. A good excuse to dress in fake branded sportswear and blingy tat.

maddy68 · 28/09/2013 17:42

Why?
I think that's a great theme. ?

MrsSlocombe · 28/09/2013 17:57

yanbu.

Feminine · 28/09/2013 18:07

I don't know how one would dress up as a 'chav' even?

Feminine · 28/09/2013 18:08

Sorry I just saw AKA post.

Oh like that then Hmm

ExcuseTypos · 28/09/2013 18:11

YANBU.

Nasty and teaching children to laugh at others. Angry

She should complain.

Donkeyok · 28/09/2013 18:11

As a parent of dc in selective school, I have to say half the playground looks like AKA description come pick up.

HumphreyCobbler · 28/09/2013 18:12

Viviennemary · 28/09/2013 18:20

PrincessFlirtyPants · 28/09/2013 18:20

YANBU. That is outrageous.

YABVU its only a bit of fun. A good excuse to dress in fake branded sportswear and blingy tat.

AKA is it just "chavs" that you don't mind teachers singling out for children to make fun of? Or is there any other groups you think is acceptable to poke fun of, as well?

Norudeshitrequired · 28/09/2013 18:28

Little Britain took the Mickey out of 'chavs' for years and was a very popular programme.
I also don't think that people looking chavvy is limited to the underclass. Lots of wags dress in a way that could be considered chavvy and they have stacks loads of cash.
CHAV although meaning council housing and violent isn't restricted to people living in council houses or violent as the term has digressed and is now applied to anyone seen to dress in what can be considered a tacky way.
If the teachers had come up with the idea then I would feel a little enraged, but the kids came up with it and kids come up wit halls sorts. Chav is subjective (and a choice) and so isn't the same as taking the Mickey out of something like race or sexual orientation.

Norudeshitrequired · 28/09/2013 18:28

-with all sorts-

Feminine · 28/09/2013 19:03

chav is subjective( and a choice)

huh?

serin · 28/09/2013 20:01

YANBU

The worst 'C' word by a mile.

edam · 28/09/2013 20:08

Very bad taste indeed. No school should teach children to sneer at people. Much less a grammar teach pupils to look down on those who didn't pass the 11+.

Norudeshit, chav isn't an acronym and doesn't stand for what you said. That's an example of backformation - people trying to work backwards from a word to what they imagine the derivation might have been.

hardboiledpossum · 28/09/2013 20:32

Yanbu

there were a fair few 'chavs and sloanes' parties when i was at uni. I always thought they were in poor taste.

huh?

People choose how to dress and behave - that's a choice.
Whether someone looks 'chavvy' is a matter of opinion - therefore subjective.
