How can people (specifically parents) not know about strikes?

BuskersCat · 27/09/2013 15:59

I asked on our local FB mums site whether anyone knew which schools were closed for strike action, or if there were any rumours as to who will be closed.

Several mums commented, really surprised that there was going to be any action. I mean it's been everywhere! How can you not know?! Do people not read the news?

Most schools send letters. DDs school said they will tell us by text on the day. I start a new job on Monday so that will be day 2 of my job. IMO telling us on the day is just not good enough!

BuskersCat · 27/09/2013 16:08

I agree that more than a days notice is not good enough. But they had literally no idea that people were even thinking about striking!

I have only found out yesterday! Probably the schools are trying to find out in advance to help parents but by law the teachers are not legally required to let the school know. The schools are also not allowed to move the children into larger school groups because other teachers are not allowed to look after children which would then devalue the strike action. I'm seriously fed up with parents being held to ransom (thinking about petrol strikes and drivers) however a teaching assistant was telling me that her wage may be docked by £2500.00 per year which she can't afford.

lisylisylou · 27/09/2013 16:10

Sorry the teachers do not have to tell the school if they're going to strike or not!!

BuskersCat · 27/09/2013 16:11

How can you have only found out yesterday? It's been all over the news, and news sites for weeks

i didn't know because we don't watch tv and hardly ever buy newspapers.

when are they due to strike then?

BuskersCat · 27/09/2013 16:13

Depends on your area. Some are Tuesday (1st) our area is 17th

I know that some teachers are striking, but I've heard far more about the firefighters' strike and in any case our school hasn't warned us that any classes will be off (we had several week's notice last term for that strike) so if our staff went on strike it would be a genuine surprise.

Maybe they're in the right/wrong union. Which union is striking?

Info is on here

Buskers, if you're clever enough to watch the news, you should be clever enough to realise that not everyone does. Now have a pat on the back for being so very on top of current affairs and jog on. What really was the point in posting this?

newfavouritething · 27/09/2013 16:47

although am glad that you wrote specifically - if I hear one more person talk pacifically, my head may well just explode.

CaptainSweatPants · 27/09/2013 16:47

Which areas are striking on the 17th?
We haven't heard anything about Tuesday so I'm assuming the first one doesn't affect us ( down south)

Tabby1963 · 27/09/2013 16:48

I take it it is not in Scotland?

Dobbiesmum · 27/09/2013 16:59

Apparently it's not in the North West either unless I missed it? We haven't heard a peep out of our schools about this, the only reason I know about it is because of catching something on the dinner time news a couple of days ago.

LouiseAderyn · 27/09/2013 20:42

I am in Wales. My dc's schools haven't said anything about striking. So I am presuming not, but itvwould be nice to have had some confirmation from the schools.

superbagpuss · 27/09/2013 20:50

our schools have said nothing at all

so even if it has been on the news it doesn't mean we will be affected

I guess I will warn dh that he might be entertaining the DT on that day

MoominsYonisAreScary · 27/09/2013 20:52

I found out yesterday when I received a latter from school

Cant remember the last time I watched the news, its not compulsory you know

ThreeBeeOneGee · 27/09/2013 20:52

The primary my children attend still hasn't announced whether they'll be open or closed on Tuesday.

NoComet · 27/09/2013 21:01

I assume DDs' school aren't striking. They don't usually.

Did once get the chap next door come round and ask if primary were on strike. When I said no, he grinned.

"I thought not, little monster said she'd left the letter on the bus"

Living with older extended family, the little girl next door was not beyond trying it on

Damnautocorrect · 27/09/2013 21:07

The school haven't said either way here.

TigOldBitties · 27/09/2013 21:08

This thread has told me it was happening, based on the link above, London won't be until the 17th so we haven't heard anything from the schools yet.

I do watch the news and get the papers at the weekend but this has just passed me by, probably because teachers/Michael Gove make me zone out. If I'm honest its been fashion week season and thats what I've been reading about for the past week or two.

I guess I'd typically watch question time but last week was the spurs game and yesterday I was on a night out...

trinity0097 · 27/09/2013 21:29

Our HT hasn't even received notification of how to deal with it from his union! Not that any of us are striking.

FryOneFatManic · 27/09/2013 22:09

Actually I only received a note today about DD's secondary. DS's primary will be shut, and they sent a letter out last Friday advising the school may close. Only DS had it in his bag and I didn't see it until yesterday (busy week, and I rely on the Parent Mail emails for this, they didn't send it by Parent Mail Hmm )

DP has notice talk of action on the news but didn't link it to strikes until yesterday so again, it would have been very easy for this to pass us by.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 27/09/2013 22:53

I only found out via threads on here - I just don't read/watch "The News" very much - I am too busy having a life Grin
I have no idea whether either of the schools my DC go to will be closed or not (yet) but I hope that if they are, then DDs notifies us in time so she doesn't waste bus fare on Tuesday...

wickeddevil · 27/09/2013 23:00

Have had letters from both schools. Dd 2 school not striking, they are sending a strongly worded letter instead. While I'm pleased that DD isn't affected, I can't help thinking that Mr Gove might not give them their pension back because of a letter.
