Karen millen dress cannot be dry cleaned..

I bought two dresses from Karen Millen a couple of years ago. I had a wedding coming up and loved them both so decided to get both of them. I wore one dress to the wedding and not the other. I then got pregnant has dc3 and finally fit into the other dress for the first time this summer.

I wore it twice on holiday and brought it to the cleaners when we got back. All the colour in the pattern of the dress ran and I got a report from the cleaners saying that the dress was faulty as it wasn't possible to clean it without the dye running.

I brought the dress back to KM a couple of weeks ago. They had their cleaner try to fix it (they couldn't) and will only offer me £50 store credit as this is the last known selling price of the dress and I have no receipt. I am a very regular customer and this is really upsetting me.

Surely if the dress cannot be cleaned then it shouldn't matter when I bought it it isn't fit for purpose?? AIBU? I really was expecting more from them Hmm

Not sure why you are upset, they offered a refund at the last known price. You don't have receipt yabu

You can absolutely take it back for a refund of the lowest sale price Heir - it's just getting the full price that might be a bit more tricky without the bride's receipt. But I don't think you should just let them get away with it.

HeirToTheThrone - I would say to the bride as she might need to return all the dresses

If you know when you bought it get bank statements and locate the transaction - they should be able to confirm the price you paid then (and their till records should match up)

I had a similar situation with faulty Gok top from Sainsbos - no receipt, they refunded me the last price, which was the sale price -half what I paid. (Of course I was out of pocket a lot less than you OP)

Whilst I understand, that with no receipt what they had done was "fair", I still felt pissy about as I had worn the top once, and it was faulty - no fault of mine. And when I buy clothes with my groceries I never keep the receipt (doh!).

Puts me off ever shopping there again TBH. They don't care though.

I would post the dress with your letter as advised up thread. Give it a go.

But them offering to refund the last known price, after so long and without a receipt is not too bad a deal for you.

But I do understand why you are pissed off about it. (I'm on the fencer here aren't i?)

KEEP RECEIPTS KEEP RECEIPTS - my new motto.

WHT are KM doing selling clothes that can't be cleaned?????

The fact is if the dress could be cleaned I would have gotten years of wear out of it. £50 doesn't replace the dress and it's not my fault it can't be cleaned

But they have no idea how much you paid for the dress.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 26/09/2013 15:49

So what really? I don't want money, I want to replace the dress

Did they offer you a credit note OP? Is there a compromise of "50 quid cash, 100 quid credit note" to be had? ( though if your credit card statements back you up you should hold out for the full amount)

but how do they know you haven't worn it 70 times and flung it in with the normal wash?

She's got the drycleaner's report and KM's cleaner's report WP.

They have given you money to replace the dress.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 26/09/2013 16:08

They haven't, £50 will not replace the dress

"couldn't have got it anywhere else"

of course you could. Ebay, charity shop, car boot, shoplifting....they don't know where you got it. Or you could have got it from them when it was on sale for 50 pounds. Why should they give you nearly 200 when they don't know that you paid that for it?

Equally, why should I be down a dress that cannot be cleaned? If the dress was up to scratch there would be no issue

If it's a dress bought years ago they can't replace it for you - it doesn't exist anymore. And for all the reasons listed on this thread, which you don't seem to want to acknowledge, they will not refund you the purchase price because you can't prove you paid it. As someone said, for that amount of money it would be worth contacting your bank for the two statements either side of the date you think you bought it to see if that will be acceptable to them.

£50 will replace the dress at the last known selling price. The dress is years old and you have no receipt. What do expect them to do?

Because the OP states that she bought it at KM, and they have no reason to accuse her of lying? If they don't want to be open to being taken advantage of by fraudsters then perhaps they shouldn't take large sums of money in return for practically worthless goods.

They have lots of reasons to accuse her of lying. People try to rip off retailers all the time.

I've always thought KM was of execrable quality so I can't say I'm totally surprised.
Personally I'd go the writing to the chief exec route and just make an absolute bitch of yourself until they replace it. That's if you can be bothered, of course!

And then, never buy anything from km again. Seriously. It's crap.

I don't want to get £185 cash back. I just think that it's a bit shit that they can produce a dress that cannot be cleaned and I'm down that amount of money. I spend a lot of money there and think its a shit way to treat their customers. I would have been completely happy had they been able to fix the dress. They can't. £50 won't by a top in KM never mind a dress

People do rip off shops, and I think the restriction on discretionary returns to try and restrict that are just fine, but in the case of an admittedly faulty item, (unless there's a cabal of shoplifters on the Internet sharing a great wheeze to pick up faulty stuff on eBay and return it (google will tell them whether that's the case, and even so, the solution is to not sell shoddy gear)) then there's no reason to assume the OP is a thief.

Anyway OP - do you have bank statements or not?

Report
Fisharefriendsnotfood · 26/09/2013 16:26

I'm sure I can sort some out. We've changed bank twice so need to look into it. To be honest I'm just shocked that they are being so shitty, no one has even apologised that the dress can't be cleaned. What happened to respecting customers etc.. So shit. I'm obviously very naive but they are happy to be your best pay as you are buying the bloody stuff. I spend at least a grand a year there. They can F off after this Angry
